[Elecraft] KX-3 higher mic gain - perfect
Hi folks Latest firmware for KX-3 now has stacks of mic gain using cheap and cheerful computer type headsets. PTT is not used here, all VOX on SSB. Disable PTT and microphone bias. Appox 2.5 volts from the PTT line will power the element ok. There is very low level audio noise from the PTT supply but well down on normal speech. Mic Gain at approx 55. Processing at 12. My own preference is roll off the bass so set 100 200 400 TX filter at -16 and 800 at -3. Very strong audio on SSB. VOX function is very impressive. cheers Paul zl1ajy -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KX-3-higher-mic-gain-perfect-tp7583259.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [K3] RX Audio/AGC
This debate comes up way too often - so I rather think there is an inherent problem with the perceived comfort of the receive audio. First, I am a long-time Kenwood user and am very used to armchair copy - as most of my hamming is rag chew on 75 and 40 meters. To that end, I have spent too much money on speakers and too much time trying to get the K3 to sound as good as my TS-480 or a TS-590. That said, you can see the current settings I am using on my K3 at: http://www.w2blc.net/K3.htm The above captioned settings are not carved in stone and I tweak them often. Tweakability is one of the strong features of the K3. You can arrange the radio to suit your specific needs and desires - not just what some lab-rat decided at the manufacturer. [Elecraft] [K3] KRX3 low on gain
Hello. For a while now I've had the feeling that my sub-receiver has been a bit 'quiet', when compared to the main Rx, requiring its AF gain to be cranked up to compensate. However, I'd not really worried too much about this as its ability to hear weak signals was not impaired. Yesterday, I finally got round to measuring the audio levels coming out of my K3 and found the following: 1) The audio output of the KRX3 was -16dB compared with the main Rx (AGC inoperative, 5uV from signal generator). 2) The -16dB disparity was there regardless of which KRX3 antenna input was in use. 3) The problem is neither band nor mode dependant. 4) The problem occurs with both the 2.7kHz and 400Hz roofing filters. 4) When listening to a 'real' signal the KRX3 is operating lower down the AGC characteristic than the main Rx. 5) Adjusting the individual filter gains did not do enough to compensate. The fact that my KRX3 is not 'deaf', but just low on gain, suggests that its front-end is OK and that the fault is further down the chain. The AGC observations, in turn, suggest to me that the gain deficit is occurring after the front-end, but before the point at which AGC is derived (and not in the audio stages). I have already removed and re-installed the KRX3 and its leads, but to no effect. Before I resort to a serious stripping-down of the K3, does anyone have any experience of a similar fault, please? 73, de Phil, GJ4CBQ. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] 10 MHz IF for K3 Transverter Operation?
I've seen a couple of old posts concerning the addition of a 10 MHz IF for use with the K3 (and KXV3 option). Is this upgrade being worked at Elecraft? I operate my K3 using an external 10 MHz frequency reference. The 10 MHz IF capability would allow use of the same external 10 MHz reference as the LO for a transverter covering the 0 to 500 kHz spectrum. -Mike Mussler, AI8Z mmuss...@wispertel.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] 10 MHz IF for K3 Transverter Operation?
Mike, Not a 10 MHz IF, but provision for a 10 MHz reference INPUT to the K3. That is the K3EXREF External Reference Input for the K3. which allows the K3 to lock to an external 10 MHz reference standard. It is available as a K3 option. The KXV3 option *does* provide an IF output (at the 8 MHz IF frequency) for use with the P3 or other panadapter displays. That is also an option that can be purchased. Neither is an upgrade - options are add-ons, upgrades are changes to the existing hardware. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/24/2014 4:04 PM, Michael Mussler wrote: I've seen a couple of old posts concerning the addition of a 10 MHz IF for use with the K3 (and KXV3 option). [Elecraft] 2 dB better reception in JT65 mode
Hi guys. I have compared my brand new K3 against my IC756pro2 in JT65b mode while doing EME on 432 MHz. With the same transverter, antenna, preamp etc. I see stations 2 dB better with the K3. It also made me see another station at -30 dB that I could not detect on the 756. I just wonder, is this because the famous low noise architecture or just the clean audio of the K3? The K3 is connected via the line-out to a Delta44 soundcard at the PC. Audio levels have been carefully checked to be sure I am doing exactly the same to both rigs. The RF path 28 MHz 432 MHz was exactly the same all the time. I switched with relays between the rigs. [Elecraft] K3 to KAT500
The internal tuner is MUCH quieter if that is a factor (mouse vs elephant). It also provides a slightly better match (not quite the same component values) and seems faster than the KAT500 for tuning (I haven't measured it). The internal tuner has no issues with my EDZ dipole (two opposing 5/8 at 75M) on any band; the KAT500 has troubles on 75 and 160 (antenna is too reactive). If you EVER plan on taking the K3 anywhere, having an internal tuner means you can operate without having to take the KAT500 et al as well. 73, Rick wa6nhc -Original Message- From: Jim Brown On 1/24/2014 3:52 PM, tom armour wrote: Is there anything I'll be missing with the KAT500 vs the internal tuner other than portability? I inherited a second K2. It is serial number 85 and works very well except the volume control is noisy and erratic throughout its range. Do I need to do anything other than replace the pot? Has anyone come up with a simple fix to add an external PTT line to the K2? I recently picked up a used K2 and just completed building a 222 transverter. I didn't realize that the K2 does not have a Transmit/Receive switch. So, I will be hot switching, in CW mode. WSJT is not a problem as there is a built in delay between when PTT and audio is outputted. An external sequencer won't help as I can't get control of the K2 PTT line in CW mode. Any ideas besides W3FPR's fix? http://www.w3fpr.com/ptt_input_for_the_elecraft_k2.htm Thanks, Lloyd K8DIO __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K2 Push To Talk
Lloyd, If you don't like my fix for this situation, you can use a footswitch to activate your amp and switch your preamp off-line before hitting the paddles - just don't make any mistakes and get things in the wrong order. I have not seen anything comparable to my solution. It was intended specifically for those using VHF gear with the K2. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/24/2014 11:12 PM, Lloyd Korb wrote: Has anyone come up with a simple fix to add an external PTT line to the K2? Re: [Elecraft] K2 Audio control scratchy throughout the range
Andy, Replace the AF Gain pot and install the Alternate AF Gain Wiring Mod http://www.elecraft.com/Apps/K2_AF_pot/K2_AF_gain_app_note.htm. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/24/2014 9:03 PM, Andrew Catanzaro wrote: I inherited a second K2. It is serial number 85 and works very well except the volume control is noisy and erratic throughout its range. Do I need to do anything other than replace the pot? I know there were other mods for the volume control and its circuit, but I believe it was because of noise only on the low end of the range. I think this pot is just plain old and the radio sat unused for the last seven years. [Elecraft] semi delay
Hi, I'm working the 160M CW contest and I'd like to lengthen the time of the semi setting. The QSK full is perfect for QSK but when I'm sending at 28 WPM or so in the semi setting, the relay in the amp is still triggering as I send. I'd like to make the delay be a bit longer. In other words, I'd like to set the semi to make it so I hear nothing while I send, it's too close to full QSK. How do I adjust this to my liking? Thanks! Oh for goodness sakes, I don't know how I missed how to do that but I got it.
