[Elecraft] KX3 doesn't like sand
Was operating off Southwold on the beach Saturday and wind blown sand got into my KX3 #1082... only solution was qrt and disassemble and clean when got it home. http://m1kta-qrp.blogspot.co.uk/2014/02/southwold-2014.html No lasting damage it would seem but took ages to get rid of all the sand grains. Warning be careful about wind blown sand especially as it will get in through all the openings. 72 Dom M1KTA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] KXPA100/KX3 working great
For those still waiting for, or building, their KXPA100, the effort is definitely worth it. I just returned from a vacation trip to St. Barths Island for 10 days, operating 'vacation styl'-intermittently, and took my KX3 and KXPA100 with a small switch-mode supply from Powerwerx, operating from a rented villa. Ran up about 2200 QSO operating late at night, mostly, using a 33' telescopic pole supporting a variety of monoband PAR/LNR EFZ antennas as FJ/N9SW. Output stayed right up at 100 Watts all bands without a waver. The amp worked great, never got too hot, and its integration with the KX3 was smooth and efficient. Had everything but the pole packed in a modest soft, padded test instrument case, which I successfully checked through 3 different flights, no issues. Reasonable weight, high performance. Perfect! By the way, the LNR/PAR EFZ antennas were also super1.2:1 or better SWR on each of the bands I had with (40, 30, 20, 17 and 6), right 'out of the box', Since the 40m model is 66' long, I ran the wire through a round uncrimped crimp terminal that just fit over the top of the pole, at about the 50% length point, and draped the antenna like an inverted vee to the deck of the villa. This put the feed point right at a comfortable level, and made no difference in SWR. Nice work, Elecraft! 73, Gene N9SW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Hi Brian, Sure -- All you have to do is be in FSK-D mode, press hold the SPOT (pitch) button. Use the main tuning knob to set the mark tone you want and exit out of it. Works just fine and all the standard tones are available in the menu. Jim - W0EB I just checked it to make sure it works. 2KHz is getting a bit above my hearing range. Here is a interesting web site in development that will take your ADIF or LoTW logs and create a world map with pins. You can filter by band/mode, etc. http://qsomap.org There are couple of little bugs I have stumbled upon, but the developer N9MS has a pretty clean interface and I am sure it will get better over time. Re: [Elecraft] Would anyone like to see an all-mode VHF/UHF ??? offering from Elecraft?
I've already made a suggestion on this topic, but here it is again: But let me reply in general that a 6m-23cm (50-1296 MHz) all-mode radio would be desirable in 100w output on the two lower bands and 50w on the rest. NO need for lead weights once the heat sink is installed. It will be lots bigger than the K3 by necessity. Important operating specs to meet: High dynamic range input, low phase noise, extremely good freq. stability (10-Hz drift), built-in sequencer for control of external preamps and amps, RS232 and soundcard I/F like the K3 plus digital IQ interface for running computer-based sw (this would be a SDR, right?). my suggestion: Buy a K3/10 - has almost all the above requirements by adding options (exception no direct digital IQ access). Design a line of transverters with 50-MHz IF to work like the KX3 will with its 2M module. 10-20w is fine (smaller/lighter). Design a multi-module enclosure to take up to four of these transverters, and include a sequencer inside it to handle control with up to four bands of accessories; transverter modules would use a edge connector plus coax output...plug -in like computer cards. The transverter enclosure could be of size to match the K3. Portability is almost as easy as a single box radio. If you want more power buy external linear amps. Note: the 50-54 MHz IF will result in full band coverage of 144 and 222 bands; 432-436, 436-440, 1292-1296, 1296-1300. LO's all would be programmable synth PLL with opt. ext reference input on 10-MHz (this is already available from other venders; I am currently using them in two of my transverters). OK that is my vision. I basically already have this in my station by use of external transverters with the K3/10. 73, Ed - KL7UW http://www.kl7uw.com Kits made by KL7UW Dubus Mag business: dubus...@gmail.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 FSK D low tones?
Thanks to Jim, W0EB. It's already in there. Just change the pitch while in the FSK-D mode. In N1MM, if you're using a DXP38 modem, it is simple to change the mark setting to match. Works! Now the audio signals are not attenuated by many dB. 73 de Brian/K3KO On 2/3/2014 18:46, Brian Alsop wrote: 2KHz is getting a bit above my hearing range. Bill, One thing you might want to check is your menu setting for VFO CRS (VFO Coarse Tuning). You could set that to 500 Hz for SSB - it is a per band setting. That may not help with your request about the SPOT button, but it may be a good substitute. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/2/2014 4:30 PM, Bill Frantz wrote: A small item for the infinitely long desired feature list: I have noticed that SSB stations usually transmit on multiples of 500 Hz -- For example the Elecraft SSB net 14.3035 MHz and and W1AW/5 on 28.4570 MHz. Sorry about that - replace 'per band' with 'per mode' in the post below. 73, Don W3FPR Bill, One thing you might want to check is your menu setting for VFO CRS (VFO Coarse Tuning). [Elecraft] New K3 Beta Firmware Release, Rev. 4.81 (misc. improvements)
K3 firmware rev. 4.81 (with DSP rev 2.82) is now available as a beta release. Highlights of this release: * RIT can now be turned on/off during transmit: (Note: If RIT is turned on or off during transmission of a CW character, the length of one code element may be affected. This will be corrected in a future release.) * 10 and 18 MHz are now available as transverter I.F. bands. 10 MHz is particularly useful as an I.F. for VLF and LF transverters, e.g. for the 600-MHz band (~475 kHz). This is because 10 MHz OCO's (oven-controlled oscillators) are relatively inexpensive, and can serve as the local oscillator for a home-built transverter. * That pesky RTTY 45/75 baud bug has been fixed. The FSK-D/AFSK-A baud rate is now global, meaning that one setting applies in all cases. The band rate is set by holding DATA MD, selecting FSK-D or AFSK-A using VFO B, then selecting the baud rate using VFO A. * RTTY/FSK transmit improved: In FSK-D mode using an PC-generated FSK input, the K3 no longer exhibits DSP errors (ERR DSE) or loss of communications. Previously, these may have occurred when the K3 was sent too many serial (RS232) commands. * A number of bugs in Remote Rig mode have been fixed. See release notes (accessible from within K3 Utility) for a full list. * You can now set the crystal filter lower edge in CW mode to 0.1, 0.2, or 0.3 kHz above zero beat. The default is 0.2 kHz. The 0.1-kHz selection provides enhanced bass response, but may allow you to hear a low-pitched opposite-sideband signal when you're tuned near very strong signals. The 0.3-kHz selection may be preferred by some operators in extremely strong-signal environments. To change the setting: Select CW mode, then go into MENU:RX EQ and tap '0' (CWT) to choose the desired XFIL LO value. For instructions on how to load K3 beta firmware, see: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
