Re: [Elecraft] Need volunteers to try an even better version of KAT500 firmware (rev. 1.63) -- more accurate initial tunes
In addition to confirming this happening, I did another quick check. It DOES operate properly and follow VFO B when SPLIT is on, whether or not you have the sub receiver enabled, just not with the XIT. If SPLIT is off, the KAT500 follows the main receiver and the sub-receiver tuning has no effect on it. Jim - W0EB I updated to KAT500 1.63 and latest KPA500 and K3 firmware. I like the way the KAT500 follows the VFO on the K3 but I noticed something odd when the VFO is set near a boundary between two KAT500 stored band slice memories. When RIT is enabled, the KAT500 follows the frequency set by the RIT offset. That is, I hear the relays click after crossing the memory boundary using RIT and stopping on a new listening frequency. If I press CLR to reset the RIT offset, the relays click again as the KAT500 follows the VFO back to the original frequency and recalls the settings for that band slice. However, When XIT is enabled, the KAT500 does not follow the frequency set by the XIT offset. That is, I hear no relay clicking after crossing the boundary using XIT and stopping on a new transmit frequency in the adjacent band slice, for which different settings are normally recalled. Shouldn't it be the other way around, to optimize the match for the transmitter, not the receiver? It's late, maybe I'm missing something. Sean, You don't even need a computer interface with the kx3. Buy the $19 cable set elecraft sells for this purpose and your ready to rock. I am using my new kx3 with nothing more than audio in/out to my laptop and the included USB cable for control via HRD. Works great. [Elecraft] 2m module for the KX3?
Hi folks, Is there any word on when the 2m module for the KX3 will be available? There are several 2m repeaters in my area (around Tampa FL) and it would be nice to access them. I know the Elecraft website says coming soon, but I was wondering what that means! Also, I was told that it would take 7-10 days for my call sign to show up in the FCC ULS database. Re: [Elecraft] 2m module for the KX3?
Sean, The time for the calls sign to show up in the FCC ULS database depends mostly on the speed of the VE/VEC giving the test and processing the paper work. A friend of mine had his call in the ULS database about 3 days after his test. I think that is the fastest I ever heard of. The slowest could be almost anything. I too am waiting for the KX3 2-meter option but haven't heard anything lately. Now that the 100-watt amp for the KX3 is moving out the door at a regular pace, I think the focus is on the 2-meter option. I am guessing late summer. If you want to get on the repeaters, go out and buy yourself a cheap 2-meter FM rig -- probably can find one for under $100 easily. 73, phil, K7PEH On Feb 27, 2014, at 7:34 AM, Sean Wall seancw...@gmail.com wrote: Hi folks, Is there any word on when the 2m module for the KX3 will be available? Re: [Elecraft] New ham and the KX3
Yep. I operate RTTY/PSK/JT65 in DATA A/AFSK mode with my K3 using 2 $5 stereo cables from Radio Shack, and N1MM, MixW, or WSJT. I did it for quite awhile with my K2 -- headphone jack to soundcard LINE IN and soundcard LINE OUT to the mic connector through a little T-pad I built into the cable with 3 resistors and some shrink wrap. Sometime back, there was an increase in the number of posts to this list with digital problems and issues. I started counting [sorry, math major here :-)] and over 90% involved problems with some an external interface box, creation of virtual serial ports and sometimes a combination of external devices and software. Since the K3/KX3 generates the ultimate FSK in computer code in the DSP, there is exactly zero difference between AFSK and direct FSK in the RF output. AFSK is quite a bit simpler to connect up however. PTT issues also come up fairly frequently ... DATA A/AFSK [in the K3] allows you to just use VOX -- totally painless. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2014 Cal QSO Party 4-5 Oct 2014 - www.cqp.org On 2/27/2014 6:50 AM, AD0ES wrote: Sean, You don't even need a computer interface with the kx3. Re: [Elecraft] 6m......just my thoughts
My interest in 6M goes back to that memorable solar cycle around 1958, when from my QTH in WV I worked ZS in the morning, W6, in the afternoon, KH6 a bit later with a ground plane and 25W AM. As an active CW op on HF, I had great fun keying my 2E26 rig to work AU. 40 years later, I enjoyed 6M from Chicago, working about 240 grids over about 3 seasons with 100W and a pair of loops at 40 ft. Since moving to NorCal in 2006, I've been active on 6M again, and worked grid #300 from this QTH this summer. My 6M activity is about 75% CW, but I also work SSB and Joe Taylor's WSJT modes. Before I had a SteppIR Yagi here in CA, I made at least a dozen double-hop E-skip QSOs to the east coast and KH6 loading 100W into an 80/40M fan dipole. The SteppIR with the KPA500 is a nice step up, and I've got 12 countries confirmed, including VE, XE, KL7, KH6, ZL, VK, JA, and a few S Pacific islands. With that perspective, what you can work on 6M depends VERY strongly on where you live. Over the last 3-4 summers, there have been MANY, MANY openings to EU from east of the Mississippi River, a few that got farther west, and a handful to SoCal. I don't remember a single opening to EU from NorCal in the 7 years I've lived here. Those east of the MS river also get openings into the Caribbean and South America that we don't get here. Those openings to KL7, VK, ZL, and the S Pacific have happened no more than a half dozen times since I've lived here, they tend to be quite short, and I've been on the air for them twice. Re: [Elecraft] 6m......just my thoughts
This OT 6 meter thread has been beaten to death and is probably ready to be retired so I have just a couple points and I'll quit. The magic band has always been there, and has always been lots of fun. Like many others, I have enjoyed 6M since the late 1970s. I would have been bored to death if I had worked 6M only, but it has always been a fun place to go during Spring months for the annual sporadic-E season. Up until the late 1990s, a dedicated 6 meter rig was needed to get on the band, so most hams never bothered to give it a go and the band was always lonely even in the Spring. During that era, a guy who just tuned and never called CQ would likely miss most band openings and would naively think the band was always dead (without anyone transmitting a hot band will always sound dead!. Yes, there were a few beacons then, but not as many as today. The game changed in the late 1990s when new HF transceivers came with 6 meter capability, and suddenly everyone was on the band, openings were easier to find, and very few openings have been overlooked since. So that's the way it is today. 6M is great fun .. But if you want to enjoy ham radio on a daily or weekly basis year-round, you really need to allocate time to the other HF bands. [Elecraft] For Sale--Elecraft K2 with Extras
My husband (N1QQP) passed away in 2013 and I would like to sell his K2, with extras, as I do not have a license to use this, nor do I know anything about radios. Members of his radio club have checked the K2 out and it is working perfectly. It is unfortunate that he passed away just a couple of months after completing this radio, so he never really had a chance to use it. The club has also given me a break down of what is in the radio, so here is the description of what I have for sale: Elecraft K2 15W Transciever, SN 06429 80 thru 10 meters, excluding 60 meters. Basic K2 kit with the following options: 1. KDSP2 - DSP Filter Real-Time Clock 2. KSB2 - SSB Adapter 4. new MH2 Elecraft Microphone 5. Elecraft KPA100 PA (100 watt amp)--unfinished (1/2 done) A club member has gone through the box of parts and everything that is needed to complete this is all present and accounted for. I do know that the kit and extras amount to an investment of approximately $1500.00. Elecraft charges $300 to assemble the radio, so the value of this is close tot $1800. Considering that it is practically new I would like $1200 (OBO) for this set up. I live in MA--very conveniently off of both I 290 and I 495--so if anyone in the New England area is interested in purchasing this set up they are welcome to come and try it out. [Elecraft] New K3/KPA500/KAT500 production firmware: KAT500 tracking of K3 VFO other improvements
The K3, KPA500, and KAT500 all have new production firmware releases available. All three must be updated to take advantage of major improvements to the KAT500 and KPA500. (Some of you may have already loaded these as beta releases.) We've added a new feature that allows the KAT500's network settings to automatically track the K3's VFO frequency. The K3 will send frequency information over the K3's AUXBUS line, and the KAT500 will select previously memorized tuner settings as you move across the band, or when you “point and shoot” to work a packet spot. If you have any difficulty with the instructions below, please post a question to the Elecraft list, or contact customer support. 73, Wayne N6KR * * * Instructions 1. Using K3 Utility, save your K3's configuration. Then install K3 rev. 4.83. Note: Be sure to click on Copy New Files From Elecraft in order to download the production firmware releases. 2. Using KPA Utility, save your KPA500's configuration. Then install KPA500 rev. 1.38. 3. If you're using a Windows PC (not Mac or Linux), make sure you have the latest version of KAT500 Utility (1.14.2.20). Do not use rev. 1.14.2.19. 4. Using KAT500 Utility, save the KAT500's configuration. Then install KAT500 rev. 1.63. 5. (OPTIONAL) Set up the K3 to send VFO information to the KAT500: (a) Make sure the K3 and KAT500 (and KPA500, if applicable) are connected via the accessory cable. The AUXBUS line must be connected, as well as the four BAND lines, which we use to “qualify” the AUXBUS frequency data. If you've built your own cable and omitted the AUXBUS or BAND lines, you may need more wires for this to work. (b) At the K3, locate the CONFIG:KAT3 menu entry. Tap the numeric keypad '1' button (also labeled A/B). You should see “KAT500Y” or “KAT500N” with successive taps. Leave it on KAT500Y (the Y means Yes, send VFO info to the KAT500). Exit the menu. As you tune the K3's VFO, the KAT500 will now select the appropriate LC settings. This occurs after you *stop* moving the K3's VFO for about 1/2 second. You'll hear one or more relays clicking at the KAT500 when entering segments that have different LC settings. 6. (OPTIONAL) In conjunction with the new VFO tracking feature, you may wish to “retrain” your ATU on 8 or 10 kHz boundaries on 160 meters, and every 20 kHz on 80 meters, particularly if the antennas have sharp SWR curves. (a) Use the KAT500 Utility, Configuration tab, Edit Configuration, Erase Memories to erase memories on bands that have sharp SWR curves (e.g. 160 and 80 m). (b) While you're in the Edit Configuration dialog, make sure the Amplifier Key Interrupt power setting is 1500 for a KPA500. If not, click Optimize for KPA500, then Apply. (c) Change the tuner's mode to MAN. In mode AUTO, the KAT500 will start a full search tune whenever the SWR reaches a threshold. If you're pretuned, that should be unnecessary and is probably undesirable. Mode AUTO is useful for remote tuners where it is inconvenient to press the ATU TUNE button when you need to. (d) Using exciter power only, perform a full search tune at 10 kHz increments on 160 and 20 kHz increments on 80 meters. Do this for frequencies where you don't want the ATU to enter full search tune when you next QSY there. This is best done by setting the K3's TUN POWER to about 20 watts, HOLD the K3 TUNE button to generate carrier, then tap the KAT500 TUNE button. It may take a while for a few settings, but often it will start close and won't take long at all. It depends on the SWR curve of the antenna on that band. (e) IMPORTANT: When you first visit a new frequency, the ATU will first snap in a setting from a nearby memory. It may be a memory you've used before with a different antenna. If the setting is inappropriate for the current antenna, the SWR will be high, and in mode AUTO, the tuner will need to retune, which requires more or less constant carrier, not SSB speech, not high speed CW. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 ordered!
Congratulations, Sean. Welcome to a great hobby. Consider the CW Operators Club CW Academy, http://www.cwops.org/cwacademy.html as a path to Morse Code proficiency. There is a backlog for online classes, so you may have to wait a bit. During that time, learn to use your KX3 on SSB and how to tune in CW signals. There are also some stand-alone learning programs that can get you started before you get into a CWA class. See http://www.cwops.org/resources.html . CW isn't just the best mode for QRP operation with a KX3, it's also the best mode, period! Hope to hear you on the air soon. 73, /Rick N6XI On Thu, Feb 27, 2014 at 11:08 AM, Sean Wall seancw...@gmail.com wrote: Hi folks! The big moment - I just ordered my KX3! [Elecraft] KAT100 Power Calibration Problem
I have just finished my KAT100, and am having an issue during the Power Calibration of R3 and R4. I am using a K2 with KAT2. I have a cable running from the Ant 1 jack of the KAT2 to the Ant 1 jack of the KAT100. The KAT100 RF In jack is connected to the Transmitter jack of the power sensor of my W2. The Load jack of the W2 sensor is connected to a 250W, 50 ohm dummy load. The K2 is set for 10W. The W2 is inline only to check the actual power out, due to the strange readings I was getting. When I hit TUNE, I can only get a voltage range of 0.0 to 0.07 VDC at U5 pin 5 while adjusting R4. The table in the manual indicates that I need to set R4 so that I get 1.8V at U5 pin 5. I have double checked the orientation of the diodes, everything checkout in the previous tests. T4 has the correct windings, and continuity between pads 1 and 4 is good. What else should I be looking at. Re: [Elecraft] KAT100 Power Calibration Problem
Jeremy, You did not mention it, so I have to ask - when connected as you describe, did you first obtain a good null at U5 pin 3 (by adjusting C31)? That is a necessary first step. If you did not get a voltage measurement in the single digit millivolt range (less than 10 millivolts), then 'all bets are off' and you need to first resolve that problem. Be certain to follow the manual instructions - no power to the KAT100 and no control cable attached. Once you have achieved that (nulling) balance point, you can proceed to the next step. While observing the actual power output, set the K2 power for 10 watts as observed on your external wattmeter. Once you have established that power level, then adjust R4 to produce 1.8 volts on U5 pin 5. After obtaining that adjustment, reverse the RF IN and ANT1 connections and adjust R3 (with the external wattmeter reading 10 watts) for 1.8 volts on U5 pin 3. Then do 'the math' as indicated in the manual to further adjust R4. After that 'job done'. If you fail to find a balance point on C31, that problem must be resolved before continuing with anything else (unless you want to do it over and over again). Should you not obtain a good null, investigate the winding of T1. It must be wound *exactly* as indicated by the illustration in the manual including the direction of the turns. If the direction of the turns is reversed, the alignment voltages will be reversed - hence your low voltage at U5 pin 5. 73, Don W3FPR On 2/27/2014 8:11 PM, JeremyJones wrote: I have just finished my KAT100, and am having an issue during the Power Calibration of R3 and R4.
