Re: [Elecraft] Reported RX Frequncies in WSJT-X?

2016-11-24 Thread MaverickNH
I might take a measure of variability at different frequencies to see if the
range size is correlated to frequency.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3} Setting K3 and WSJT-X levels?

In general, one would preset the sound card output to between 50 and
75% of maximum and leave it there while adjusting the modulation level
with the LINE IN (mic gain in DATA modes).

Most sound cards start to show some distortion above 75 - 80% of full
output and have a fixed level of output noise that is more noticeable
as the output level decreases.

Adjusting to 50 - 75% of maximum output also generally puts the sound
card level in the "sweet spot" (where rig's the mic/line gain is
between 9:00 and 3:00 or 25-75%) for the K3 and many other rigs.

Except for rigs like the K2, KX2, KX3 that fail to provide a "Line In"
(Patch in), never connect a sound card output directly to the mic jack.
Use the Line/Patch in and always disable the mic input when operating
any audio based data mode. If you *must* use the mic jack, connect the
sound card to the mic jack through a 20 dB attenuator (for example,
4.7K resistor from the sound card line out to the mic and 470 Ohm
resistor from the transceiver mic input to mic return).

Re: [Elecraft] [K3} Setting K3 and WSJT-X levels?

2016-11-24 Thread Richard Ferch
You don't want either control to be too close to either end of its range.

If the sound card level is so high that the gain control in the rig has to
be set to only 1 or 2, the granularity of the rig's control becomes a
problem (e.g. set it to 1 and get zero or one bar, set it to 2 and get six
bars, with no way to reach a setting in between). Also, some sound cards
might become non-linear at or near the top of their control ranges, and too
high an input level into the rig might also cause non-linearity introduced
at the rig end of the link before the level control.

If the sound card level is too low, the granularity issue might appear at
the sound card end, and the signal to noise ratio at the input to the radio
might become a problem. You want the audio signal at the input to the rig
to be well above the level of any hum or noise picked up anywhere along the
way, but not so high that it drives the audio circuits into non-linearity.

Ideally, then, you want the rig's Line In level control to be in a
comfortable range (say 6-10 or so) with the sound card's control somewhere
in the middle of its range.

[Elecraft] Elecraft KAT500 when powered up generates noise in RX

2016-11-24 Thread Brian Hemmis
I searched online but couldn’t find an answer to this. Perhaps someone in the
group has a suggestion.
When powering up the KAT500 tuner (used with KPA500) the static level on my
Icom 7300 raises to as much as 7 S units of a pulsing ignition-like sounding
noise. At first I thought it was a noisy wall wart but tried several and no
difference. Then wired it directly to my Astron supply with the same noisy
results. The problem is worse on 6 meters but still apparent on the lower bands.
Any thoughts on a fix for this ?

[Elecraft] Multiple rig control and logging using a single Macbook Pro

2016-11-24 Thread Thomas Donohue
Hi to all:

I posted the following on the MacloggerDX site and got a partial response, so
thought I would try here also.

I have been using a Macbook Pro running the El Captan operating system and the
MacloggerDX program for rig control and logging of a K3 for several years now
and all is working FB. I’m in the process of adding two new rigs to the shack,
a Yaesu FTdx 3000 and a K3S. I intend to use MacloggerDX and a single Macbook
Pro for rig control and logging on all three rigs. Adding the FTdx 3000 in
preferences on MacloggerDX seems to be pretty straight forward and foresee no
problems there; however, adding the K3S in preferences, which will use the same
utility as the K3 could be problematic. I should also mention that both the K3
and K3S have attached, identical P3 pan-adaptors, which also have a separate
utility., How do I distinguish between the K3/P3 and K3S/P3 utilities in
MacloggerDX? Or, do I use the same utilities for the both the K3/P3 and K3S/P3?
Has anyone in the group traveled this road before and if you have, how did you
handle the rigs and software? Any thoughts, help and/or guidance would be
appreciated.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Tom/W1QU

Re: [Elecraft] Multiple rig control and logging using a single Macbook Pro

2016-11-24 Thread Bayard Coolidge, N1HO via Elecraft
I'm running a mid-2015 MacBook Pro, but have just one K3 and one P3.However, I
do have a powered USB hub to which I've attached an externalsound card (Asus
Xonar U5) and three serial lines. The one cute thing aboutthose serial lines
(which use the "real" FTDI FT232R devices) is that theyeach display a unique
serial number, which can be viewed under the USBDevice Tree page under System
Information which you dive into from the"About This Mac" GUI by going to
"System Report". I've found that to bevery useful for troubleshooting, because
I don't have to sort out device namesin "/dev", etc. (The 3 serial lines are
for the K3, a Trimble ThunderboltGPSDO, and a Kantronics KPC3+, all of which
run at different speeds).
I typically run WSJT-X under MacOS (Sierra, 10.12.1) using the K3's serial
lineand the Xonar, but I can also run RUMlog and Fldigi. But, occasionally,
I'll bootWindows 10 (under Parallels 12.1.1) to run HRD, Lady Heather, Winlink,
Outpostand/or EZNEC+. I usually maintain the K3/P3 firmware using the usual
utilitiesunder MacOS, but I can also do them under Windows if need be. Note
that theP3 and the K3 utilities *do* allow you to select (under "Port") which
serial lineyou wish to use. I don't know anything about MacloggerDX.
As I mentioned above, I am using an externally powered USB2 hub becauseI need
to power the Xonar. I had a fair number of problems stabilizing
thisconfiguration under Windows (7, then 10) because the GPSDO runs at 4800
baudand Windows insisted it was a USB mouse. I alleviated it by rebooting
Windows, sometimes 2 or 3 times in a row. Although the MacBook Pro is USB3 and
the USB3spec stipulates that a USB3 port must supply more than enough current
to supportthe U3 (I forget the exact numbers off the top of my head), it still
didn't solve theproblem of multiple serial lines, coupled with the fact that
the backup drive isattached directly to the (only) other USB port. One trick is
to mark the cables carefullyand keep them in the same physical USB hub slots.
Another is to avoid hot plugging, which despite manufacturers' propaganda WILL
blow hubs; I keep a spare handy.
HTH, and 73 for a Happy Thanksgiving,

[Elecraft] KAT500 and KPA500 utility program ptoblems

2016-11-24 Thread Carl Yaffey
My current setup is K3S, P3, KPA500, KAT500
I recently replaced my K3 with the K3S. I was able to run all the utilities
with no problem when I had the K3.
Now, the K3S and P3 utilities are fine. But not so withe the KAT and KPA ones.
Both take several minutes to come up and run.

KAT500 utility: can’t connect (KAT500 not responding)

KPA500 utility: connects at 38400 no problem but no info shows in the operate
tab. firmware N/A. I try to load firmware and it fails. I tried to force a load
(per the manual) with no luck.

More info:
The K3 is set to USB.
The computer is an Apple mac mini with the latest OS.
I’ve refreshed the ports before trying to connect.
I’ve tried rebooting, unplugging and replugging the USB cables.
I’ve checked all the cable connections.

Note that all units are operating OK except:
On 6 meters, the KPA faults when trying to run more than 200 watts.
It used to work fine when I had a K3 driving it.

Any suggestions?

[Elecraft] KXPA Firmware Download Problem

2016-11-24 Thread Dauer, Edward
The latest production F/W revision for the KXPA is 1.35. The KXPA utility,
however, which correctly notes that 1.35 is available, will not download it for
me. I get the message “Your folder has the most recent . . .” But what I have
is 1.32.

Version 1.35 requires the latest KXPA utility, which I believe I also have –
rev. 1.14.4.11 (for Mac OSX). In any case that’s the most recent version
listed on the Elecraft site.

Any ideas about what I might be doing wrong – or what I can do to download 1.35?

Thanks in advance.

[Elecraft] Narrow Gaming Keyboard and Giant Mouse Pads - K-Pod

2016-11-24 Thread M. George
I thought I would share the following. I have been using a narrow gaming
keyboard for years now and really like it. It has cherry mechanical keys
and nice options on the back lighting. The real reason for the post here
is related to my K-Pod and the positioning of the K-Pod in relation to the
keyboard in my paddle. Plus, I found these huge mouse pads online for a
very reasonable price. They are 32" x 24". I hate table edges against my
wrist when keying the paddle and using the mouse, not to mention using the
K-Pod as near to the keyboard as possible. I'm pretty happy with the two
big mouse pads which solve the movement of the paddle too etc...

The big mouse pads were found on the shopping site that nobody can live
without these days... search for 'Large gaming mouse pad'. I found some
big ones on usual auction site too, but they were wider and not as deep.

Anyway, here are the pictures if you want to take a look at the layout with
the narrow keyboard and the K-Pod / Paddle etc...

Happy Thanksgiving!

[Elecraft] Paddle Wiring

2016-11-24 Thread K9MA
When I built my KX1, I discovered that the paddle (KXPD1) was wired so
the default setting was that the paddle was pressed to the LEFT for
dits, just the opposite of the way bugs have always been made, and the
way most people wire their paddles, as far as I can tell. I'm
left-handed, but I learned to sent with a bug (some 50 years ago), so I
just re-wired the KXPD1 so I don't have to keep changing from the
default setting. Now, rumor has it that both Eric and Wayne are
lefties. Could this be the explanation for the KXPD1 wiring?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3} Setting K3 and WSJT-X levels?

2016-11-24 Thread Nr4c
I find the following to work for me.

Set computer output level to about 50%. Now check radio ALC with K3(s) in TEST
mode. Observe adjustment of rig to 4bars solid and fifth flashing. If computer
is too high, you wind up with 7 bars or none. If ALC setting is low like 2-5,
you usually can't get it to be right.

Lower computer output and check again. I keep setting computer lower until I
can set the ALC easily. May be 20-30%. But this works for me on K3 and K3S,
and KX3.

Re: [Elecraft] Paddle Wiring

2016-11-24 Thread Ron D'Eau Claire
Hello Scott:

It depends upon which way you have the paddles "pointed", to the left or to
the right. That reverses the dot and dash paddles.

To get the dot and dash functions on the desired paddles once you have them
positioned as you like, just enter the MENU and select INP, then choose
between PDn or PDr (normal or reversed).

No wiring changes needed.

the right-handed position. I suppose some lefties send that way (dots
with thumb), but I don't.

I know about the menu item, of course, but I got tired of changing it
every time I reset, or something. If I ever sell it, I'll gladly rewire
the paddle back.

Subject: [Elecraft] Paddle Wiring

When I built my KX1, I discovered that the paddle (KXPD1) was wired so the
default setting was that the paddle was pressed to the LEFT for dits, just
the opposite of the way bugs have always been made, and the way most people
wire their paddles, as far as I can tell. I'm left-handed, but I learned to
sent with a bug (some 50 years ago), so I just re-wired the KXPD1 so I don't
have to keep changing from the default setting. Now, rumor has it that both
Eric and Wayne are lefties. Could this be the explanation for the KXPD1
wiring?

I think that they will adjust your shipping charge when your order is

Sale: "Free Ground Shipping on these items anwhere [sic] in North America.
Shipping cost will be reduced at the factory after order is placed"

[Elecraft] One problem solved. A new one appears.

I solved this by plugging in the cables one at a time. All utilities working
fine now.

New problem:

On 6 meters, with the input power to the KPA500 around 7 watts, I get 200 watts
out. But as I increase the input power, the SWR increases and a “hi swr” fault
occurs. This happens with 3 different antennas: a 3 el beam, an R8 vertical,
and a dipole. All are tuned to low swr via my KAT500.
I have tried connected the beam directly to the KPA with the same result.
This only happens on 6 meters. It used to work fine when I had a K3. I now have
a K3S. Is there some setting in either the K3S or the KPA that I should change?

I would guess that you have a piece of coax and/or connector going bad.
Will be something common in the path from amp to antennas, including a
remote coax switch. Something is arcing

Cables and connectors are forever going bad. Especially the ones we've used
forever and just keep reusing because they're a convenient length. Most
likely something mechanical, too much bending for too many years, etc.

2016-11-24 Thread Eric Swartz - WA6HHQ, Elecraft
Hi Mike,

We noted with the Black Friday and K3S Bundle specials on the order form that
those items would get free ground shipping to North America and that we would
adjust out the shipping for those items when the order came in. (We do not
charge the credit cards until we double check the orders.)

We will email you the final total next week after we return from the holiday.
(The factory is closed Thursday and Friday and we will be back in action on
Monday.)

Yup, Canada is still in North America. ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA Firmware Download Problem

2016-11-24 Thread Dauer, Edward
Dick and David --

Thanks for your good counsel; I do appreciate your taking the time to help.

I’ve solved the problem but in a way that defies explanation.

On a hunch I decided to reload the F/W in the KX3. I know that was up to date,
but because I use the KXPA PC connection to connect the KXUSB to the computer
for both the KXPA and the KX3, I thought . . . well, it can’t hurt. But
momentarily it did hurt. Trying to reload the KX3 F/W with the KX3 Utility
resulted in a hang up. Unable to shut down without removing a battery, and
then experiencing a continuing hangup even after the manual’s suggested
restart. Multiple times - the Utility reported no communication between the
computer and the KX3. So, on another hunch (or out of desperation) I unplugged
and reseated everything and then I reloaded the KX3 utility – even though the
one I had on board is the latest.  Did that; tried the F/W reload on the KX3;
and that worked. Then back to the KXPA Utility, tried to download the new F/W
rev for the amp – and that worked!

And people say the business I’m in is mysterious and arcane . . . .

Many thanks. Hope you had a great holiday. See you in the CQWW CW. I’ll be
on with an updated KX3 and KXPA.
