Re: [Elecraft] Re who would spend 30 hours building a k2?

2018-01-30 Thread Robert G Strickland
I think that building the K2 has to be an end in itself. I have more
pictures of various pieces taped to colored construction paper than I do
of the radio itself. Other pictures feature my method of winding
toroids. Then, at the end of building, you step over the "building
finish line" to discover that you own one of the really great radios in
the history of amateur radio. Then the operating fun begins.

If you are interested in building as well as operating it's a pleasant
experience. Just like a 10 mile hike, you do it one simple, easy step at a
time.

Those who seem to have had trouble just wanted a K2 to operate and tried to
put the kit together as quickly as possible without double-checking their
work at each step along the way.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Faulty SWR indication

2018-01-30 Thread Peter Lambert
The funny SWR also appears with the ATU in circuit but not at the tuning PWR
level. It appears when the rig is in "normal" transmit mode after tuning. Bob
is likely right though - try turning the power down and see if results in
"normal" operation. You may find it power dependent - if so it could be very
hard to fix unless you're experienced and willing to solder and unsolder parts.

Based on your description, I'd say there is some instability in one of the
stages. The dummy load will present a uniform impedance at all frequencies,
thus the SWR will be 1:1. output network will show evidence of reflected
power. Using the ATU, it adds filtering thus eliminating the spurious output.
I suggest looking at the output on a spectrum analyzer.

Using a known good dummy load and cable the indicated SWR on the KX3 is
high --- 1.8 to one using 10 watts. An external wattmeter/SWR meter shows
the Dummy Load as a perfect load. The reflected power needle does not move.

I have done repeated Power Out Calibrations with the KXPA100 (not relevant,
I know). The KX3 shows the same faulty SWR Readings with or without the
KXPA100. Of course the ATU mode is in bypass. But, when the ATU is
active, it matches, shows a proper SWR briefly, then shows the faulty
reading as the rig transmits.

It was a factory built unit S/N 4932.

I'm stumped. I guess it is time to send it home for healing.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Switches Number of Speakers

2018-01-30 Thread Chester Latawiec
Yes. I've noticed that as well, in that it occurred when a loud signal popped
into the passband! My AGC is always on with the affected K3.

That makes two of us.

So I now suspect that there is a common menu setting or front panel setting or
firmware setting that is causing this. I was afraid my vintage K3 was dying!

My k3s occasionally does this too. I finally isolated the problem
initiator as a burst of very loud signals, such as occurs when listening
to a very weak DX station when a very strong (speaker rattling) station
plops on top of him followed by the loud frequency cops. The Sub Rx must
be is on and the volume for Main Rx is cranked up for the weak station.
A single loud signal does not appear to initiate the SPKRS parameter
change. It appears to only happen with multiple loud signals in the
passband. These signals will be loud enough that I turn down the volume
very quickly. During this loud outburst, the SPKR config will change to
"1". I have set up a macro button to toggle the SPKRS configuration so
that I can quickly return it to "2". If I turn the volume down a bit, it
doesn't do this so I'm wondering if there's some "safety" mechanism
built into the audio driver control circuit/firmware. Is it due to
mixing of close frequency audio signals in a non-linear audio amp
(clipping mode) producing sub-audible products? I don't know, it's just
a thought. It's only an occasional annoyance for me so I've never
pursued a cure.

My AF LIM parameter is currently set at 30 but I seldom have AGC off. It
does it with AF GAIN "HI" or "LO" but if the gain is set "LO", I must
turn the volume knob up more to compensate so I end up listening at the
same relative audio levels. I'm running LP Bridge and at least one
logging program and a K-Pod but have no other macros that directly deal
with the SPKRS parameters. My sub Rx card is an older version retrieved
from my original K3.

A cure or a work-around would be nice,

Re: [Elecraft] Wrong PIM nuts in KPA500 kit

2018-01-30 Thread Michael Blake

I received a call back from Elecraft Technical Support yesterday.  It was quite
difficult to come together on exactly which screws and embedded PEM nuts I was
talking about in the bottom cover.  Once we were in agreement on the screw
positions I was talking about the technician looked at a bottom cover but was
unable to determine the exact thread sizes as he was unwilling to remove the
green protective tape which covered the holes.  He was not really equipped to
handle this mechanical sheet metal problem but was going to refer it to another
group which could more easily address the problem.  I initially got the
impression that he thought that I was incorrect about the threaded nut (PEM
nuts)  error but I think we got past that.

For clarification, if you have a new kit and would check, these are the steps
where the problems arise:

These are the steps in the Kit Assembly Instructions

Page 15, figure 14 show six (6) 1/4" 6-32 BLACK FLAT HEAD SCREWS. The right
hand two (2) 6-32 screw locations were equipped with 4-40 threaded nut inserts (PEM
nuts) rather than the correct 6-32 threaded inserts (PEM nuts).  The two (2) 4-40
BLACK FLAT HEAD SCREW shown in this figure were correctly equipped with 4-40
threaded inserts (PEM nuts).

The same problem exists on the right hand side cover.

Page 24, figure 32 instructs you to install four (4) 6-32 BLACK FLAT HEAD
SCREWS.  In this case the two rear 6-32 screw locations were equipped with the
correct 6-32 threaded inserts (PEM  nuts) but the front two locations were
equipped with 4-40 threaded inserts (PEM nuts).

At this point I am waiting to see what they find when they check their current
supply of bottom covers and what their recommendation will be to correct the
problem.

I do have a photo but I do not believe I can attach it to the reflector.

I am waiting on a response from Elecraft TS on this one but I thought I would
ask if anyone else has encountered this problem on the KPA500 kit.

On the bottom edge of both the right and left side panels there are places for
three 6-32 flat head screws. The countersunk holes are obviously larger than
those for the other 4-40 flat head screws.

In my kit one of the three PIM nuts, for each side, was the correct 6-32 thread
PIM nut and the remaining two had 4-40 PIM nuts installed in the bottom cover.
When I had temporarily installed the left hand side panel in the middle of
construction I failed to notice this and just installed screws that fit (one
6-32 and two 4-40) but during final assembly it became obvious that the 6-32
screws would not fit in 4 of the 6 positions.

Thinking that they just had paint in them I tried tp run a 6-32 tap through one
and it naturally seized up and twisted the PIM nut out. Not being the brightest
bulb in the shop I tried that a second time and twisted out the second PIM nut.

Fortunately these were both on the right hand side where there was room to slip
two 6-32 hex nuts in place and I just used two 4-40 flat head screws on the
left side.

Hopefully Elecraft will be able to send me the correct PIM nuts to replace the
four incorrect ones. That was my request in the email to Doug at tech support.

I certainly would not want to replace the bottom coverl as that would require a
complete disassembly of the amplifier.

Has anyone else encountered this?

[Elecraft] K3 Switches Number of Speakers

2018-01-30 Thread Chester Latawiec

My old K3 occasionally switches from 2 speakers to 1 speaker (makes it really
tough to listen split chasing DX)!

Any ideas what may be causing this?
