The torque spec is called out in the manual. Why not use a torque wrench? Can we please not resurrect the KPA500 hum thread already beat to death multiple times years ago? Or does everyone need to chime in yet again? 55 inch-pounds. 73 Eric WD6DBM On Mon, Oct 19, 2020, 9:15 PM Bert wrote: > Toroidal transformers cause very little acoustic hum, unless the core > is not tightly wound or the copper wire windings are loose! > > If you have to tighten the mounting bolt with a torque wrench > to get the transformer quiet, something is wrong! > > Bert VE3NR > > > > > On 2020-10-19 19:59, Jim Spikes N4KH wrote: > > Looking for details from anyone who resolved issues with excessive > > transformer hum during transmit on a KPA-500. > > > > > > > > I have a hum mitigation application note sent from Elecraft tech support. > > But the procedure recommended is pretty involved - removing front/side > > panels, un-plugging connections, removing the transformer, changing > > positions of the rubber discs, and putting it back together. Toroidal transformers cause very little acoustic hum, unless the core is not tightly wound or the copper wire windings are loose! Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Transformer
When the KPA500 first came out, there were lots of complaints about hum. This made it difficult for Elecraft Support to differentiate between normal hum, which I can barely hear, to the obnoxiously loud hum of a misaligned transformer. I finally called support so they could hear the hum of my KPA500, which was in the obnoxious category. Take a breath, you can fix this. Tweaking the bolt torque, and slightly moving the transformer, requires only removing the cover. If you don't own and can't borrow a torque wrench, given your investment--buy one. A small, inexpensive one will do the trick as the torque is quite low. 73 Eric WD6DBM On Mon, Oct 19, 2020, 5:00 PM Jim Spikes N4KH wrote: > Looking for details from anyone who resolved issues with excessive > transformer hum during transmit on a KPA-500. > > > > I have a hum mitigation application note sent from Elecraft tech support. > But the procedure recommended is pretty involved - removing front/side > panels, un-plugging connections, removing the transformer, changing > positions of the rubber discs, and putting it back together. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Transformer
Hi Jim, I had a bad hum from my KPA500 kit, an early model. Elecraft sent me a new center bolt that was only threaded on the end--the original bolt had threads all along the shaft. Also an additional pad. Assuming you assembled it all correctly, try these two things: If you have a torque wrench, tighten the bolt to the exact spec. If you don't have one, try slightly tightening or even loosening the bolt. Second, make sure the transformer is exactly centered on the bolt and not touching any of the sheet metal, including the side panel. Use a strong flashlight to check it with the top removed. UNPLUG THE AMP FIRST! Mine has been hum-free for years, after the tweaking. [Elecraft] PA500 Transformer
"If anybody has any lessons learned I would appreciate hearing them." I built a KPA500 kit and I too was bothered by the transformer hum. I learned that Elecraft has used several different transformer suppliers and that transformer sizes vary. This means the clearances between the transformer and the case may be very different for the supplied transformer than as shown in the manual. I carefully shimmed the transformer before tightening the retaining nut so there was no case contact. I also learned that hum level is directly related to PA current. If the PA load is mismatched the efficiency goes down, PA current is higher for same power output, and hum level is higher. I ignore the 1.5:1 match is ok recommendations and tune for better than 1.2:1. Perhaps the most important thing I learned is that one can get used to almost anything. The hum and clicks that drove me crazy in the first few months of ownership are now ignored. I found something else to worry about. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 Transformer
I don't see the problem. I presume you bought a kit to assemble it yourself. You simply reverse part of the assembly procedure, then re-assemble it. I've assembled several KPA500s and I'd bet that you didn't quite get it right first time. There's no shame in that. This is a risk you take with self-assembly. ISTR there's a torque wrench setting for tightening. Did you use one? Have confidence. Take it apart, do as they say and enjoy feeling smug that you fixed it yourself. :-) Lessons learned? Yeah, take your time, follow instructions to the letter. Don't do anything if you're tired. Plenty of space. Plenty of light. The right tools and a suitable container for parts. 73, Alan. Re: [Elecraft] K3 band data query
Dennis, The K3's BCD outputs are defined by band, not frequency. You need something that tracks QRG, but the following may be serious overkill for your needs... If you use the general purpose logger DXLabs, or the contest logger N1MM, consider a freeware Band Decoder called FreqEZ. The program receives frequency info from those loggers and allows you to to define 255 band segments that control any combination of 16 remote relay lines. The software is free, but the hardware components are not. The FreqEZ website describes a DIY solution or an Assembled and Tested solution. (DISCLAIMER: I wrote the free software, but I also sell the Assembled and Tested hardware) www.freqez.info If you only need a few outputs, you could probably cobble together something that uses the free software but is simpler and cheaper. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 / K3 Mystery
Ben, The process I use is to first clear all the tuner settings on the band I'm using. I go to STBY and hit ATU TUNE. Low power is applied to start the search. When I first got the amp I did this when in OPER, but even with low drive power I kept getting faults due to initially high SWR. Recently during a trace working with Dick he noticed intervals of very high drive power... up to 60w, which means the K3 ramps up power output at times. It's complex. I also bought an accessory boom mike that plugs into the connector on the QC-35 and so far that has worked well in OTA tests. My QC-15 no longer attenuates my KPA1500 fans beyond just covering my ears with the cups so something has gone wrong with those. The QC-35 are very effective. I use a ModMic with the QC-15 which works very well and may substitute for the accessory mike if that doesn't pan out. The boom mike came with a much more rugged cable than the one which came with the QC-35. I was concerned about the mike moving but with the shirt clip I find it stays in place to my satisfaction. I don't know if it will reject amp fan noise however. I'll have to try that today. The fan never gets above speed 2 on SSB so not much of a challenge. The boom mike came with a TRRS to dual TRS splitter which worked well on the back on my K3s. The QC35 claims 40hrs of battery life when wired which is far more time than I'll ever put in any contest so that isn't a concern. When unplugged it becomes a Bluetooth set which I've paired with both my phone and PC. That means that I no longer need a PC headset cluttering up my desk.for when I want to do MorseRunner or listen to a Youtube session. 73 and stay safe! jim ab3cv __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to e...@qrv.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500/GainLow/Input Pwr
Frank, Check the idling current: it should be 2 amps (keyed with no drive). Gud luck, Roy K6XK My KPA1500 just started needing a lot more drive (2X) to get 'normal' output. I normally need 25-30 watts drive to get ~1k out. Now I need about 60W. I get two kinds of alarms, depending on how I test the situation, either a red "Gain Low' or a yellow 'Input Pwr'. If I drive with a steady 10w, I get a 'Gain Low'. On cw, Just before cutting out, I can drive the amp with ~65w, get ~600w out, then get 'InputPwr" followed by Gain Low' and the amp cuts out. Time to go back to the factory?
