Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 failure

I've been at V1.75 firmware for quite some time but random lockups of the
KAT500 started recently.

It might be helpful knowing what command caused the problem.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 LCD and Backlight assembly problems

2021-04-10 Thread Bruce Forsberg
I resoldered the LED backlight devices by applying a small amount of
pressure and resoldering each pin to make sure they were flush. This made
the pins of the LCD flush with the PCB holes. I soldered it this way and it
has worked. The LCD is working fine for my K2.

Is there someone who like to sell this board?

[Elecraft] K3 with N connectors ?

2021-04-10 Thread Larry Shapiro

Good morning all.

Quick question.
I recently bought a nice K3 ser # 89xx ,and it came with 2 N connectors on
the back instead of the usual UHF SO-239.

The seller said it came from the factory that way.
Is this common ?
I have never seen this before.
Thank you,

Larry,

One local ham had me change the UHF SO239 connectors to N connectors
because he does not trust the UHF connectors.

I know he recently sold it, maybe it is the same one.
It is easy to change them back to UHF type, but it definitely did not
come from the factory that way.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 with N connectors ?

2021-04-10 Thread Mark Goldberg
Not to start a flame war about N vs UHF connectors, I prefer N and
built my KPA500 and Hardrock 50 amps with them. My KX3 remains BNC,
and any cable I have that is disconnected often is a BNC, sometimes
with a BNC male to N female adapter, which are really common. No one
but Hams still use PL259/SO239 connectors. The flange type four screw
panel mount connectors are interchangeable. Change them back if you
really want to. I now have really good interconnects with N connectors
on my radios, switches and amplifiers. Since Hams don't like them, you
can find really cheap, really good cables with N connectors at
Hamfests, whenever they come back again. By good, I mean double
shielded or heliax cable. It makes a big difference in terms of RF
leakage compared to the 75% braid crap if you have multiple radios. I
also make my own cables with real Amphenol (and other good brand)
connectors.

I've found surplus heliax cables from Cell Tower installs and test
setups made of the really expensive Gore Teflon cable for pennies on
the dollar. Real Amphenol silver plated connectors and adapters are
common, also very reasonable.

[Elecraft] Elecraft PA via Generator Power?

2021-04-10 Thread Gary Memory
Anybody know, or have experience using an Elecraft PA (a 500 watt in my
case) with a generator supplying AC power (a Honda 2 KW in my case)? I’ve
not done it yet. Wanted to check to see if anyone else has prior experience
before I end up blowing the final, or some such. The Honda flavor I have
is the inverter styleand they have been known to put out a crappy
“signal” at 60 Hz on occasion, not to mention fluctuations due to differing
load at different moments.

Thx

We've done that a LOT (at least 6 years) with two KPA500s on Honday
2000i generators for CQP and 7QP expeditions. Two can run on a single
Honda, but with some voltage sag between the gen and the unregulated PSU
in the KPA500. You have to set the "right" tap in the KPA500's primary
(low, med, high) that hits the "just right" HV so that the KPA doesn't
protect because it's too high key up and too low key down. With two KPAs
on a single 2000i, both can be running CW at the same time at about
300W. Maybe both full power if one CW, one SSB.

W6GJB's contesting trailer is set up for two K3/P3/SVGA/KPA500/KAT500
stations, which we mostly run on CW. Several years ago, he bought the
paralleling kit, so we run two in parallel, both in economode, running
our entire station.

A single 2000i will run an entire single-TX station in economode.

Glen (GJB) has done propane conversions for his 2000i, and recently for
my new 2200i. There's a company that sells the kit. Much safer and more
convenient than gasoline.

[Elecraft] K2 LCD and Backlight assembly problems

2021-04-10 Thread edauer
Same here. I am about 75% through a K2 build and faced the same question.
In my case the pins didn't quite make it to being flush with the bottom side
of the board. Rather than pressing on the LCD and taking the risk of
overstressing it, I flowed the solder from the bottom side and then checked
with a DVM for a good connection between the topside LCD pins and the
reverse side of the through-holes. All looked good, and the LCD works as it
should on every test so far.

This is my fourth K2. I did not have this problem with the previous builds,
probably because those had integrated spacers. The separate spacer and LED
pieces in the new kits may be higher by a fraction of a millimeter.

I resoldered the LED backlight devices by applying a small amount of
pressure and resoldering each pin to make sure they were flush. This made
the pins of the LCD flush with the PCB holes. I soldered it this way and it
has worked. The LCD is working fine for my K2.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2021-04-10 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

I awoke to an inch of snow with more falling.  That lasted until
mid-afternoon.  Then it started to hail followed by sleet and finally
pellets of snow.  Lastly it started raining so the snow is gone.  Good
day to watch the volcano in Iceland.  At least one of their web cams has
succumbed to the lava when a new fissure opened.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iqXr4-U0JEs for a night time view.

The auroral oval is very weak today.  Low flux readings too. There
was a sunspot earlier in the week but it is gone now.  Cycle 25 is
barely underway.  I hope to hear you tomorrow afternoon.
