[Elecraft] FT-8 Problem, KX3, Signalink USB

[Bob McGraw]

Do be reminded that the audio from the computer does in effect key the 
VOX circuit in the Signalink.  That issues a hard PTT command to the 
radio.  Then the audio from the computer via the Signalink, with VOX on 
in the radio, is another transmit command. Then with CAT control from 
the computer to the radio for PTT that is a third transmit command.    
Choose one!


If the audio from the computer does not key the LED on the Signalink 
then there is no transmit command from the Signalink source.  If it does 
then the Delay on the Signalink slows the transition to receive.     If 
the VOX level is set such that the audio from the computer via the 
Signalink is low then the VOX won't key the transmitter.   Of course if 
there is noise on the audio path, that noise will activate the VOX in 
the radio, hence it stays in transmit.     {Why does one have VOX on 
anyway?}  Then of course the computer communication to the radio can 
issue a PTT command.  To me this is the smart way to handle things.


Understanding the "system" is the key to success.

Thanks to a suggestion from K2UT, my WSJT-X and Signalink USB problem with
my KX3 is solved. The answer was to use VOX for PTT rather than CAT. I can
still use CAT for rig control, just not for PTT.

Very interesting.  I was not aware of the general availability of AA 
LiFePO4 cells. It's important that these cells be changed using a 
charger designed for their capacity. The diodes prevent their being 
charged in the holder.

[Elecraft] KIO3B board ?

I got hit by lightning last summer and lost my KIO3 Rev B  - burnt inductors 
and 
Other damage.

One of the guys kindly sent me an Rev A version board, which I sort of got 
working, but
Its not quite 100% .
I had queried about surplus Rev B version boards, but lost the replies here, 
when I rebuilt my
Also damaged PC.

Does anyone have a Rev B version board set that they are not using, if you had 
upgraded to the 
USB sound card board KIO3B,  that they would be willing to part with? 

I want to see if I have further damage or not  or if its just Rev A vs Rev B 
related. 

Please let me know, as I try to diagnose the other “intermittent" issues…

situation.  I went back and set the config for the KBPF3 to "not inSt"  and 
found no difference at the signal levels at the switchover at 1700 Kc.  
Toggling back and forth between "not inSt" and "nor" I verified that there is 
no change in signal levels.  On the surface it appears that I purchased a 
broken used KBPF3.  Now I really have to take things apart to figure out what's 
wrong.

board.  I never really checked it out except for the 630 meter coverage 
and transmit capability - both were as advertised.

Using a wideband noise generator (QRP Guys K7QO Noise Bridge) I tuned 
from about 500 kHz up to 30 Mhz and was able to identify the filter 
switch-over points (most of them anyway).  I measured the received noise 
level using the P3 dBm scale.  At none of the switch points was the 
noise level more than about 5 dB different from one side to the other.  
By continuously tuning and watching the display, it was apparent that 
the differences were mainly due to roll off of one filter segment or the 
other.  The gain was uniformly consistent across each of the ham bands 
but sometimes rolled off at the KBPF3 switch points.  The area between 
7.41 MHz and 8.4 MHz is kind of no-man's land due to the first IF being 
there.  At the IF frequency the gain was down >50 dB.
