[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2021-09-05 Thread kevin

  Good Evening,

Conditions were poor on both bands.  Forty meters had a few storms with
medium to deep QSB.  I am gradually learning how to control the single
lever paddle.  If I can maintain a decent rhythm my mind doesn't switch
to thinking about mechanics.  If I think word after word they flow
better.  If I think letter by letter my buffer gets corrupted.

  On 1405.5 kHz at 2200z:

   Until next week 73,

  Kevin.  KD5ONS

My uncle has a country place, that no-one knows about
He says it used to be a farm, before the Motor Law
Sundays I elude the ‘Eyes’, and hop the Turbine Freight
To far outside the Wire, where my white-haired uncle waits

I strip away the old debris, that hides a shining car
A brilliant red Barchetta, from a better, vanished time
Fire up the willing engine, responding with a roar!
Tires spitting gravel, I commit my weekly crime…

Wind in my hair –
Shifting and drifting –
Mechanical music
Adrenalin surge –

Well-weathered leather
Hot metal and oil
The scented country air
Sunlight on chrome
The blur of the landscape
Every nerve aware

Suddenly ahead of me, across the mountainside
A gleaming alloy air-car shoots towards me, two lanes wide
I spin around with shrieking tires, to run the deadly race
Go screaming through the valley as another joins the chase

Re: [Elecraft] Bad Ham Radio Day

2021-09-05 Thread Fred Jensen
Glad you got it working.  I've assumed that, since the K2 is a kit in
which you build the case with pieces around the electronics, it is
really important that they all bond well.  Especially true at 100 W.

Yes, Jim's research and publications are the go-to source for
ferrite/chokes/baluns/transformers, and he is sometimes referred to as
"The Reverend" around the NorCal clubs.  He is also a hands down expert
in the audio world and in the realm of grounding/bonding.  His website
[k9yc.com] also provides some gastronomical information as well as
reflections on jazz. 

[Elecraft] Ferrite Torroid RF filters

2021-09-05 Thread Ed Cole
I used a F140-43 torroid with three turns to filter switching noise from
my HP 226519-001 "blade" 50v 50A PS:
6m_control_panel_back_3.jpg (825×619) (kl7uw.com)

used clamp-on ferrite filters on the 240vac hot wires.

So when I obtained a new Meanwell RSP-3000-48 switching supply to
replace the HP, I used a similar method using two ferrite torroids sized
for RG-8x with two clamp-on beads for good measure.  On the 48v output I
used two torroids sized for RG8 in series with an extra loop thru them both:

http://www.kl7uw.com/6M-EME-CONTROL.jpg

I see no switching noise on my K3 that is only two foot from the PS.
The coax beads are probably mix-31 as they are sold for the general HF
ham market as common mode RF filters on coax lines.

The original tip for filtering the HP PS came from Lance-W7GJ who did
many of the first conversions of the Harris ch.2 TV linears to 6m ham use.

I am building a 1200w MRF1K50H HF/6m (W6PQL) linear to replace my Harris
to use with my K3/10 driving with 3w to the new amp.  So I will be
running QRO on HF in a couple months.

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 FW - N0UK tx inhibit & CW sidetone bug reproduced

2021-09-05 Thread Chris Cox, N0UK
Still hoping for some resolution to this problem since it’s now been a year
since it was reported to and acknowledged by Elecraft as being a firmware bug.

It really renders the KX3 as fairly useless as an I/F rig for microwave
transverters if you need the TxInhibit function.

Re: [Elecraft] Bad Ham Radio Day

2021-09-05 Thread John Oppenheimer
I've found preferred method for evaluating Ferrite Choke Balun common
mode rejection performance is to measure common mode rejection (CMR).

Some various 43 material examples, which demonstrate CMR is a function
of device inductance.
https://www.kn5l.net/Balun-CM/Balun-43material/

FT140-43 7T CMR measured using four different methods to ensure
correlation and correct CMR measurement process. Also demonstrate
correlation with SimSmith model using Fair-Rite Complex permeability file.
https://www.kn5l.net/Balun-CM/FT140/

Comparing 31 and 43 material which demonstrate, for a given inductance,
43 material results with improved CMR. With equal turns, 31 material has
small CMR improvement.
