Thanks to everyone for the comments. Sounds like the KX3 works fine in this
environment. I should have known since it is an Elecraft radio :^)

Re: [Elecraft] center fed dipole

2021-11-01 Thread Lyn Norstad
Hi Wes -

Yes, you could model this ... and I did do that first to get a gut check on the
concept. But as I said, I don't rely 100% on the modeling. I want to see real
world measurements. I used an antenna analyzer to read the impedance
(comprised of resistance, inductive reactance and capacitive reactive). Those
are the figures quoted.

The gain on 80 meters is right where I want it, in a N-S pattern. My purpose
in building it for 3.5 MHz N-S was to put the best possible NVIS signal into
our state capital (Springfield, IL) on 80 meters for EmComm purposes. It does
that job very nicely, and I find myself able to do so when others around me are
having difficulty.

It has decidedly different patterns on other bands, but none are particularly
objectionable. If you'd like to see the plots, as imaged by EZ-NEC, they're on
my QRZ page (scroll down).

In the 2 years it's been up, I have logged 131 contacts in your area - Tucson -
on 160, 80, 60, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15 and 12 meters.

It's the only antenna I have, and it works well.

First I think you could model this.

Second, how did you measure these impedances? You quote them as resistive, are
they?

Is that 5 dB gain in a useful direction? What about the other bands?

[Elecraft] Notable SSB QSO (HD8R)

2021-11-01 Thread Wayne Burdick
I took advantage of the excellent conditions today to work a little DX with the
KX2. I was running 10 watts on 17 meters to a 20 meter vertical.

There was HD8M (Galapagos), loud and clear, calling CQ "up 5" on 18.145.

When I broke the pileup on the third call, I reflected on how many of the KX2's
features came into play to make this happen:

  - ATU easily matched my 20 meter vertical on 17 meters (1.0:1)

  - internal battery allowed transmit at a full 10 watts

  - speech compression made it sound more like 20 or 30 watts :)

  - used the KX2's stereo audio/dual-receive function to listen on both
18.145 (RX) and 18.150 (TX) at the same time; transmitting SPLIT

  - annoying S8 noise pulses were vanquished by the NB

  - carriers from the inconsiderate were dealt with by auto-notch

  - used one of the rig's two DVR messages to do the calling

That's a lot of fully integrated fun in a radio that weighs less than one pound
and draws only about 170 mA in receive mode. And a great excuse to get outdoors.

Details on the KX2 can be found here:

Re: [Elecraft] center fed dipole

2021-11-01 Thread Lyn Norstad
In my book, there are too many variables in any given installation to rely 100%
on any "standard" convention, including modeling.

When I built my Extended Double Zepp (a 360 foot long, 1.25 wavelength center
fed dipole) with a design frequency of 3.5 MHz (and approx. 5 db gain), I
measured the impedance at the "shack end" of the feedline (160 feet of 600 ohm
OWL from https://www.trueladderline.com/ ) at multiple points on each band.
Actual readings ranged from 323 ohms at 1840 KHz, 536 ohms at 3573 KHz, 598
ohms at 5357 KHz, 249 ohms at 7074 KHz, 371 ohms at 10136 KHz, 344 ohms at
14074 KHz, 260 ohms at 18100 KHz, 50 ohms at 21074 KHz, 182 ohms at 24915 KHz
and 142 ohms at 28074 KHz (note tuner runs in 'bypass' mode on 15 meters where
it is roughly 7.5 wavelengths).

I'm, feeding that thru a hybrid balun which is 4:1 on the antenna side, and 1:1
on the shack end (Balun Designs #4116-T). Approximately 15 ft of RG-8x runs
from the balun to the KAT500.

The KAT500 gives me a 1.00 match on all those frequencies (standard FT8
frequencies) and generally less than 1.5:1 at any point on all bands 160 thru
10 meters whether I'm running 10 watts or 500 watts.

The weak spot in the chain is the KPA500 which will not allow the KAT500 to
tune properly if the amp is in "Operate" mode (it did when it was new, but
that's another issue).

Every installation is different, but this combination works as well for me as I
could hope and results bear that out.

I don't understand the use of the 4:1 balun. On 80M the feed Z of that
antenna is more likely 25 to 50 ohms. The 4:1 balun would present a
impedance to the RG-213 of 6.5 to 12.5 ohms. You would be much better
with a 1:1 balun configuration. Remember one is not matching the feed
line impedance but is matching the antenna impedance.

The ideal use of a 4:1 balun is with a folded dipole antenna which
presents a 200 to 300 ohm impedance. Now the feed line Z is much closer
matched and the 4:1 balun gets the Z to the coax in the 50 to 75 ohm
range. Much more efficient. This of course is a single band antenna.

See https://www.dj0ip.de/balun-stuff/ for good, accurate, and reliable
information on baluns and their usage. Most hams have it wrong as well
as most manufactures of antenna tuners who include a 4:1 balun.

[Elecraft] loss of receive audio on K3

2021-11-01 Thread Douglas Zwiebel
I had the strangest thing happenyesterday (K3, 1st prod run).

All of a sudden, I lost all audio output (headphones). I pull the
headphones, but same thing on the internal spkr. Radio was tuning,
receiving (per P3) and transmitting, but zero AF output.

After 15 seconds of wonder, I turned the K3off, waited 30 seconds and
turned it back on. All was back to normal.

At one point, I heard a low rumble, like someone strong was tuning up on
me. But no. That immediately preceded the loss of AF.

After I turned it back on, after another 5-10 minutes, I again heard the
low rumble..but nobody tuning up on me...and this time, no loss of AF.

Again that same rumble happened again, but that time the AF went to about
50% but then came back after I transmitted a dit (just dumb luck timing?).

Have you heard any stories like this before or is this a novel experience?

Thanks
de Doug KR2Q

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 in multi radio environment

2021-11-01 Thread Greg Mitchell
If you get the model with the roofing filters, it is actually a better
receiver than the k3 in a multi transmitter environment. With good antenna
separation you can run a k3 on the cw portion of the band and another on
the ssb portion without an issue.

[Elecraft] KX3 in multi radio environment

2021-11-01 Thread Ken K6MR
I don’t have a KX3, but a friend does and he has a question regarding the KX3
receiver in a multi transmitter environment like Field Day. I would not expect
it to be as good as a K3, but is it usable? Anything special you have to do to
it? I’m thinking at a minimum a set of band filters, which would be easy even
with the 100 watt amp.

Thanks for your thoughts and experiences.
