[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report
Good Evening, During a lull in the recent storms I had a chance to raise the vertical wire of a 1/4 vertical. I have twenty radials in place with four wire segments left to fill in any gaps. Each element is cut for 1/4 wavelength at 40 meters. I started stripping the end of each wire when the weather changed. I remembered the wire nuts in my pocket so I used them to affix four radials and the vertical wire to the feedpoint. It tested well on both 20 and 40 meters when I sent a few CQs to the RBN. Today that 40 m vertical worked well on 20 m, better than it did on 40 m a bit later. Conditions were changing all day. When I turned on the radio around 9 AM there was a lot of noise with some QSB. During the first net the QSB ranged over 4 s-units but fairly slowly. Noise was less. I switched between the two antennas for most noise. My new antenna won, it also got good signal reports. Signals were a little weaker on 40 meters. Less QSB with higher noise. Close-talking" microphones are designed for use in very noisy environments, like military aircraft. They are not directional, rather they cancel all sounds more than an inch or two from their element. They are NOT "pleasant" sounding mics, they tend to be kind of raspy, their sole performance objective enough noise rejection that you can understand speech. When you hear speech from copters and similar environments, you're usually hearing one of these mics. 40 years ago, when I was doing a lot of live recording and also selling Shure products, they gave me an experimental mic with this sort of design that might be used for vocals by drummers. It sounded varying degrees of awful. :) Shure is a VERY good microphone company, based in/near Chicago. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] 80M Elecraft SSB Net 3/20/2022
Meets Sunday evening 9pm ET (0100 UTC Monday morning) weekly on 3775 kHz (Yes, we know it's in the Advanced class portion of the 80M phone band, but we really couldn't find a clear frequency in the General class portion, my apologies). Note that we've kept the same local time, since we've found that attempting to shift with daylight time plopped us on top of another net that does NOT shift for daylight time. So, we go with the flow... Checkins (thanks for the relays!): WB9JNZ Eric IL K3 WM6P Steve GA K4 KPA1500 WY3T Tim FL K3s WB8HRO Tim MI FT450d KPA500 N9CPD Chuck IL FTdx10 N8SBE Dave MI K3sKPA500 Please check us out and check in. 80M is generally quite good propagation amongst the stations on the East Coast and MidWest. It would be interesting to see if folks out West can check in, as well. It's nice for everyone to be able to hear each other without pronounced skip zones, like we encounter on the higher bands. 73, -- Dave, N8SBE __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Knowles HC-3 Mic Element Replacement For Heil HC-5
Tony, Every single "military microphone" I've ever encountered [a lot] required very close talking to get any output. They're often used in extreme noise environments and that's one simple way of removing the ambient noise such as on an aircraft. They are often used right up next to your mouth, and would be "breathy" except they had limited high freq response. Designed for a very specific purpose. Don't know how any would sound in ham service with a pre-amp, but Jim, K9YC, is on this list, he retired from a career as an audio professional and so far, he's my go-to-guy. Maybe he'll read this and offer his take. 73, Fred ["Skip"] K6DGW Sparks NV DM09dn Washoe County Tony wrote on 3/20/2022 4:25 PM: All: I finally got the chance to test the Knowles HC-3 military microphone element I ordered. The eBay seller claimed that it had the same frequency response as the vintage Heil HC-5 and it is very close in that respect. However, it's not nearly as sensitive as the Heil HC-5 so it requires A LOT more mic gain. It also needs to be close-talked to the point where you're lips touch the element screen. Move 1/2 inch away from the mic and the audio drops off to nothing. The Heil HC-5/4 I have were also made to be close-talked, but they have enough sensitivity so you can be 2 or 3 inches from the element and still maintain good output. I asked Bob Heil about all this and he said Knowles built the HC-3 for him which eventually morphed into the original HC-4 and HC-5. He also mentioned that a pre-amp could be used with the HC-3 to make it work. So the $40 dollar military surplus HC-3 has the same high articulation as the HC-5, but it lacks sensitive. I should also mention that the HC-3 is larger by a 1/4 inch give or take so it's not a drop in replacement for Heil headsets like the BM-10. [Elecraft] Got my repaired K3s back on the air
Boy 20 meters is nicely open into Scandanavia this morning around 13:30 UTC. Just had a real nice 10 minute chat with Mika, OH6NVC on 20 CW. Great to be back on the air and I can now get back to running my KX2 as a portable rig instead of primary - LOL. Also great to see more solar activity allowing better signals on the higher bands again.
