[Elecraft] Rig control error with K3S and WSJT-X on 30 meters
Over a period of time I've noticed an occasional error when transmitting FT8 on 30 meters with my K3S using WSJT-X. A couple of seconds into a transmit cycle, WSJT-X will display a "Rig control error" box, and I start hearing the rig's modulated audio output on its own speaker. This only happens on 30 meters, and not 100% of the time. Over the past day, I've done FT8 QSOs normally on various bands, but when I tried 30 meters tonight I experienced the above error several times in a row. It's occurred over time using various versions of WSJT-X. The computer is a Mac running Catalina. I tried going into WSJT-X preferences and changing Radio > Split Operation from "Rig" to "Fake It," but the error persisted. I can try changing around various parts of the setup (using a Windows PC, for example), but first was curious if anyone has seen a band-specific error like this. Re: [Elecraft] Interference on 17M
Potentially a solar panel. Any new installations nearby? Does it go away after sunset? I have an S9 noise signal on about 14036 with spurs on either side coming from a new solar installation about 200 yards away. Broad but very stable. Makes that section of the band tough to use. I think it’s Solar Edge but haven’t confirmed it. QTH is Northern California. 73, Brian, K0DTJ > On Apr 18, 2022, at 07:30, Ron Bell via Elecraft > wrote: > > Does anyone know the source of interference in 17M, starts at 18.138, peaks > 18.147 and second peak at 18.158, sounds like very rapid buzz or popping > sound? Re: [Elecraft] K3 auto transmit - W7RIP
Rip, Try this from the K3S errata of the owner's manual from back in 2016. Then you don't have to mess with Window's settings. PTT/KEY USE WITH THE USB PORT IMPROVED: Some PC applications can control PTT and KEY at the K3S via the RTS/DTR signals of the USB port. However, use of these signals may also allow the PC's USB port initialization to unexpectedly activate transmit at the K3S. This can happen if the computer is turned on after the K3S, or if the USB cable is not connected. There is now a "Safe" mode (the default) which disables PTT-KEY transmit until the K3S receives a command via USB, such as a read of the rig's VFO frequency. To turn on safe mode on/off, go into CONFIG:PTT-KEY and tap '1' to select "USB SAFE" or "UNSAFE". Exit the menu and turn the K3S off/on. Applications that use PTTKEY via USB but never send commands may require "UNSAFE" mode. In this case, unwanted transmit can be avoided by turning the PC on before the K3S. This should also apply to the K3 as it was part of a firmware update. I don't remember which one. 73, Mark, WB9CIF -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of Rip R Sent: Monday, April 18, 2022 18:51 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3 auto transmit - W7RIP Thanks for the help W0VTT, AB7E, & K6MKF. It's basically a measure of how low-low-low - much lower than the speaker impedance - the output impedance of the amp is. A good damping factor helps control inertia effects in the speaker cone - helps give you "tight bass". - Jerry KF6VB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

There is usually a marking on the magnet face indicating the impedance. While I've modified several 2-ohm units to a higher impedance, it's more fun to watch the expression of the flea-market guys as you pull out a Phillips screwdriver and open case after case looking for 4 and 8 ohm ones. For Sale: matching pair of Motorola HSN6003B external speakers for K3 with diversity mode. These are the version of the classic Motorola communications speaker, designed for use on police motorcycles. Besides being waterproof, which isn't a real need for use with the K3, they have superior acoustic characteristics, as well as a top-mounted cutoff switch and the superb factory mounting bracket. These two were purchased new, and then wired such that they connect via a standard 1/8" stereo splitter adapter (which I will include). Used them on my K3 in a smoke and pet free environment, until I had to re-do the shack and there was nowhere to place them. Plug-n-play for the new happy owner. $50 for the complete setup plus shipping, which I am guessing would be ~$17 USPS Priority Mail.
