[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report

2022-10-02 Thread kevin

Good Evening,

Both bands were full of noise of various kinds.  A little QSB too,
just enough to alter tone.  Twenty meters was weaker than last week
while forty meters was good for more local operators. There was a radio
black out today.  I'm not sure of the time because I heard the CA QSO
party going strong, with some DX, earlier in the day.

Fire danger fell after the rain showers.  The air smells better
too.  Hopefully some of the fires were affected.  I moved some wood two
weeks ago.  Yesterday I found a new elk trail through the same area.
They are spying on me.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 frequency memories question

2022-10-02 Thread john
As Don said it is not difficult to sort by subject. I also prefer a single
list and often find it educational and enjoyable to read about Elecraft
products that I do not own. Towertalk does not have separate lists for
verticals, Beverages, Yagis, rotators, towers, grounding, etc. One list is
easy to follow, especially if posts are on topic. Last month there were
about 200 posts on this list so it is not that difficult to even manually
pick the ones of interest.

Filter the posts any way you want (including deleting them) - learn how
to use filters in your email client and you can do things such as moving
the particular post to a specific folder in your email client list.

It is not hard, just read the section of your email client instructions
on filters.

I would prefer one list - I have been working that way for at least 10
years.
As Jack said, it depends on putting the product in the subject line - if
not, you can move it manually.
BTW, I use Thunderbird for my email client, and I receive individual

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft AX-1 Whip Antenna

2022-10-02 Thread Fred Jensen
A colleague at work showed up with a fairly bad case of poison oak.  We
lived in a rural area in the Sierra Nevada foothills, had a lot of
poison oak, and also had a lot of manzanita, the leaves of which, when
boiled to make a solution and spread on, will really help.  So, I
collected a bag of leaves for him, and told him to "boil the leaves and
use the solution with cotton balls."  Next morning, he wasn't any
better.  I asked him if he'd done what I said.  He replied, "Yes, I used
the whole pan, and it tastes terrible!  I was barely able to get it
down.  What was I supposed to do with the cotton balls?"

While I agree that it is pretty much critical to have the device name in the
subject line, it would be a nightmare for the Elecraft support / development
folks to follow multiple email lists. This is the reason that just a few lists
were set up (I believe just one until the K4 came out).

There is a lot of overlap between the various devices, so it is good to list
each involved.

It is quite understandable for users to have set up external email lists for
the devices, but don’t expect us to know about them, which explains my surprise
(and delight) when I discovered the iogroups KPA500 list.
Learning things from other users is always good and mostly enjoyable!

[Elecraft] K4D in strong RF Environment

2022-10-02 Thread Dave (NK7Z)

Hello,

I am considering purchasing a K4D, rather than wait for the K4HD. My
issue for waiting is I have a few hams, very close to me, that like to
run power. By close I mean 700 or so feet or so, sometimes running a KW
on FT8. Another station maybe half a mile from me, running 500 watts,
on FT8...

I realize that no rig is going to perform well close to the operating
frequency of these stations, however, has anyone had any experience with
a K4D, and a strong station running say FT8, on 20, while the K4D is
listening on the CW portion of 20?

How about other bands, say 1 KW, close, on 20, how does the K4D handle
40 in that environment? How does 15 look, etc... Are there there any
issues when in a strong RF environment?

I guess in a more general sense, my question is how does the K4D
perform, in a very high RF leveled environment, as compared to a K3.

If you have/had a K3, I am wondering if the K4D performs, worse, better,
or the same in that environment.

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 frequency memories question

2022-10-02 Thread Rick Bates, NK7I
It is, here.  The device being commented on, should be part of the
header when a thread is started so folks can read it or skip it.

But it's MUCH nicer to have separate groups for each item.  One may not
have a KX2, KAT500 or other Elecraft device and the often numerous and
ponderously long threads can add up to a LOT of email to be deleted.

Being a member of the specific device lists, limits that and the email
noise floor.  Being on a targeted list improves the chances of getting
an accurate answer or solution.

Having a varied interest in many things, I get a low of 50 emails a day,
sometimes peaking near 300 per day or more.  By limiting to the specific
groups of interest I find I can manage it better and when it gets too
noisy on a topic, I can drop out of that thread (if the list is on
groups.io, most of mine are).  Thankfully the lists don't 'blow up'
often so the daily average is under 100 most times.

Almost ALL of them are quickly deleted, less than 5% are answered and
under 1% get saved for future reference (that's what archive diving is
all about).

No. It is for plain, unformatted text, with no attachments. That was an
intentional decision by Elecraft when they set up the reflector more
than 20 years ago. html formatted text is generally stripped, and those
emails show up with blank content. The same is true of the reflectors
