Re: [Elecraft] High Tx IMD with new K3s/10
Thank you Bill, You made my day. When K3s is driving my JUMA PA1000 without 100W PA, the drive is better than excellent up to 8W. I need 2W for 600W clean output (-40dB) in SSB. For CW 4W is enough for a 1000W output (measured with LP100 power meter). Juma use this active element, and here are some interesting measurements for 144MHz: http://www.nxp.com/products/rf/rf-power-transistors/rf-broadcast-and-ism/144-148-mhz- 1250-w-cw-50-v-2-meter-amateur-reference-design:RDMRFE6VP61K25H_2M_AMATEUR?fpsp=1&tab=Documentation_Tab Benny OH9NB == Message: 6 Date: Fri, 24 Feb 2017 16:24:11 -0700 (MST) From: Bill Leonard N0CU To:elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] High Tx IMD with new K3s/10 Message-ID:<1487978651422-7627339.p...@n2.nabble.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Benny, I recently had Elecraft replace a KLPA3A again. They also did the Tx IMD mod and an alignment. I am now seeing the following 3rd order IMDs: 4W -40 dBc 8W -40 dBc 9W -35 dBc 10W -30 dBc 12W -20 dBc What is also encouraging is that now the higher order IMDs (5, 7 & 9th) stay at least 10 dB below the 3rd. Some of these were equal or higher than the 3rd last summer when I was discussing the problem with Elecraft. Obviously they have made some notable improvements since then. The two tone envelope still looks more like a square wave at 12W, but this radio is spec'd as a 10W transmitter that is clean to -30 dBc, so it appears they are now meeting their advertised spec. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Re: Can't believe my Chameleon Antenna!
Reminds me of Diamond BB-7V (vertical) and BB-6W (wire) antennas. Takes 200W and analyzer gives nice SWR across HF. We added the length of wire gradually from 6 to 30 meters, and always better it worked. What is inside? I had to open it. Plenty of big resistors ! About 5 % of power is possible to get to the wire, 95% goes to the resistors, which can take the 200W. If you are QRP, you have made compromise with the power. Do not make it again with radiation. To compare with 100W and dipole, you have left much less than 1%. Re: [Elecraft] K3 : toggle between two powers ?
Thank you, Dick Programming was not what I intended to learn. Now the quickest way goes like this: =Open Elecraft K3 Utility =open Edit / Command tester Macros =Type for Macro 1 - Text to send - pc005; (do not forget semicolon) =Type for Macro 2 - Text to send - pc100; =Save Now it is easy to toggle by clicking Macro 1 or 2 between 5 and 100W. = Hide Utility to PC low-edge command-line. This way it is ready for rapid action, and screen is normally free. Benny OH9NBK3 # 119 Dick Dievendorff kirjoitti: > Benny, perhaps I was misunderstood. Re: [Elecraft] K3 : toggle between two powers ?
Thanks, Dick I tested that. -Go to Elecraft Utility program. -Go to Configuration -Restore saved config including power level. It takes 40 seconds to restore, Then K3 RESTARTS. No, this is not what I meant. Rolling with that shaft encoder is much more handier. But not handy that, either. Imagine yourself working barefoot 100W and need some help with linear to get that station. Adjustments are too long. I need to switch between two power levels, not roll. But this is just a whisper of wish. Benny OH9NB ___ Dick Dievendorff kirjoitti: If you have a computer connected, you can also set power with the PC command. I realize not everyone has or wants a computer connected at all times, but it is another way. I think it is a rotary shaft encoder, not a potentiometer. [Elecraft] K3 : toggle between two powers ?
For wish list: I need to toggle between two power levels, eg. 100 and 5Watts. Now the only way is to turn PWR pot abt 4 whole rounds. This slowly tears the precious and expensive potmeter. Lower power is often needed for amplifier or QRP. Full 100W for barefoot. Toggle might be PF1 and PF2. Re: [Elecraft] K3 with SPE Expert 1K-FA amp
They work easy together. Minimum connection is TX coaxial and Key out. Look at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Expertamp files section for full interconnections. About 15W drives it to full kW. I personally prefer semi-BK in CW with this amplifier. BK-relays are fixed to printed board and not floating. They make some noise. Otherwise a delight combo. [Elecraft] Dream of K3B
I have a dream. A high quality 20W SSB-output from K3/100. When the quarantee now is over, modifications become possible. 100W PA might give 20W very low IMD output. A separate higher rail voltage and class A ?? But the question is also of the driving K3LPA stage. 20W would be sufficient for QRP and low-power work. Also, it is enough to drive modern amplifiers to full output. Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 - ATU or BNC
When installing KRX3, why not make it properly. Installing BNC may save trouble later, and do you have the necessary hardware then at hand? Also, people seem to be afraid of taking off the right panel. They make it the easy way. Problem is just loosening 2 transistors. Now, when side panel is off, you may also change ANT1 and ANT2- connectors to BNC and make a ground strap between those connectors and ATU. With BNC for KRX3 your choises are not limited. You can even use a power plitter for specialized needs. Benny OH9NB ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] KAT3 specifications
Owner s manual is available on Elecraft s website. There page 64 says: The KAT3 provides a wide-range, switchable C-in/C-out L-network for matching a variety of antennas with SWR as high as 10:1 (100 W) or 20:1 (10 W). There are 8 inductors and 8 capacitors in the L-network, each switched with a DPDT relay for high reliability. The KAT3 also includes a second antenna jack and associated switching relay. There’s an additional jack on the board for routing the unused (nontransmit) antenna to the KRX3 sub receiver module. Highly recommended. [Elecraft] K3 Mic Gain vs ALC
You are not alone Not only SSB. I have overshoot on CW. Adjust your power to e.g. to 22W and wait a while. With the first mark, the power shoot high but comes at once down to preset value of 22W. Instantly following mark starts OK. You have to wait for about 15 seconds to see it fully again. It is difficult to find without a fast meter or screen, e.g. oscilloscope or peak reading meter (LP-100A). With barefoot K3 this is OK, but feeding a high-gain amplifier might be fatal. As I have not seen 5 Xtal filter Pass-Bands, I tried some home-brew methods. They are here in files section: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Elecraft_K3/ You have to sign in, but it is not a big effort. I got 2 .jpeg-figures drawn on 8 Xtal Inrad filter plots: -estimation modelled with AADE free FILTER-program -AF-measurements made with K3 in-built feature. Here I found important to have all RX EQ bands in 0 dB. The figures are roughly the same, you can guess the general function. Keep in mind: only the first 30dB is significant. Hence: difference between Elecraft own 5 Xtal and Inrad 8 Xtal filters is not great. [Elecraft] K3 - A CW rig?
Fred, you are right. K3 is not for everybody. For SSB-man, there is everything available, 1st class. Remember K2 had SSB as add-on unit. This rig has: -Voice monitoring -Microphone selection -Digital speech compression -VOX of premium quality -Microphone equalisation And with DVR-unit: -TX message record and playback -RX audio recording Same kind of list can be made for digital modes, too. Maybe one reason for messages from CW-folks is that they are more alert; they knew K3 at once and acted. Another is certainly the huge improvement for CW using this RX architecture. Improvement with narrow roofing filter is more significant for CW than SSB. But SSB is improved, too. This is my best phone machine during 50 years of amateurisme. And I have had and made many. [Elecraft] K3 USB-cable and Noise Reduction
I have been a happy builder/user of K3 for some week. Experience is that this is a real Elecraft-product: building was smooth; just according to the manual. A few problems arose, but reading the manual again corrected my own fault. KUSB-cable did not work at all. This may be a question of my own laptop. Replacing it with commercial series cable cured my problem. I was lucky to have RS232 still in my laptop. But KUSB is useless with me. I had a TS870 here before. I found it`s Noise Reduction almost useless for SSB. But on CW it was shining. Real marvel. Then I waited to see the same with K3. Nothing for me. Even the new version is not much better. I believe and trust that Elecraft will find a well working NR version for CW with time. K3 contains so much goodies, that I feel my learning curve is still in the beginning. [Elecraft] K3 Service Manual
The Owner`s Manual refers in many places to Service Manual. Neither manual nor the schematics were with K3 delivery. Schematics are downloadable on website. FB! How about Service Manual? If necessary, I am ready to pay for it. By the way, I would like to see a dictionary for "e-mail abbreviations" like FYI. Are those accepted as official combinations e.g. in CW-traffic? I think we all accept to use plain english on this kind of public reflector. It might not be correct to discuss in germany, italian, french, finnish language or american abbreviations, might it? [Elecraft] K3 filters
Nobody seems to talk about Group Delay Time. The steeper the LC or Xtal filter is, the higher are Group Delay variations. One filter side up, the other side down. In narrow filters these are very close. This is at least one reason for "ringing". 8 Xtal filters are clearly steeper than 5 Xtal types, and have higher variation of Group Delay. DSP makes very steep filters WIHOUT group delays. K3 concentrates best selectivity here. Correct! Roofing filters just protect the rest of RX from too big signals. We tend to think that roofing means final selectivity. Wrong! It would be interseting to measure Group Delays between different Xtal roofing filters with and without DSP. Let us imagine an ideal 9MHz SSB-filter plus/minus 1,5kHz. 10 Xtal filter has shape factor of 1,33. Now -60dB points are plus/minus 2kHz. Now, the Group Delay difficulties are on both side from 1,3 to 2,2kHz. Now the best way of using DSP is to delete these variations by choosing (IF) DSP bandpass of plus/minus 1,2kHz. Still OK for contest, but you do not agree. A 3kHz good Xtal filter became only 2,2kHz final selectivity. I would rather use 5 xtal roofing and all bandpass DSP. Group Delay was importand in analog TV-transmitters (ancient times). It was found the hard way. Once understood, it was controlled and measured every time. Final solution was to use transmitters with normalized IF signal processing. Centralized block for pass-band filtering with standard Group Delay was the answer. [Elecraft] K3 filter selection
Fully agree with 2,7kHz and 500Hz 5 pole filters being sufficient. Add there 6 kHz for AM and (15 kHz) FM, if needed. And of course the coming variable filters are interesting, or at lest one of them. I think 5 was a good estimate, after all. But this is not the end of it. Take a KRX3 Subreceiver option and give these 2 receivers different profile. And VOILA: a possibility of 10 different filters. [Elecraft] Small power supply for a K1
Steve, about Gamma HPS-1 What kind of experience and how long you have used it. You told it is NOISY. Did you ground your equipments properly? The many evaluations of the supply seem to be strictly positive (5/5). Of course they have bought it and want to say they make wisew decisions. I have not found this noisy. Quality varies ??? I made the modification 2k to 2k7 resistor change, and aural noise will be blocked. Fan is silent (still). [Elecraft] Re: K3 Audio Files 75m ssb
Biaural-Pseudo Stereo-spatial are some names given to technics, where mono is transformed to stereo. Simplest is RC/CR net where 3db-points of Left and Right channels coincide. Here we have amplitude split. Published studies for specially CW and FONE filters used to have OpAmp filters to make it steeper. TV receivers used Pseudo Stereo and is seen here : http://www.datasheetcatalog.net/datasheets_pdf/T/D/A/3/TDA3810.shtml This system keeps frequency response unchanged, but change other channels phase. Difference is 0 near low-end. It increases to near 1ms near 600-800Hz (CW) and goes to 0 again in high frequences (1500-2500). In free air sound velocity of 300 m/s this 1ms is about the same as distance of our ears. The feeling is "opening" of band. "That station is to the left". I have used this system for 20 years, and am happy to have it in K3. Still the best processor in reception in between our ears! [Elecraft] TS870
TS870 has best RX audio I ever heard. This is often neglected area in RX design, but stays in line from antenna to our brains. My experience of many RX building is to keep amplifier naturally linear without almost any feedback. Pass-band may be 20Hz30kHz. I hope K3 has the same quality in audio part. TS870 can be modified with Inrad filters, but the real problem is still broad up-conversion band. Even the canadian gain-modification is just a partial help. To replace 0603 and 0805 SMD resistors was just on the limit for my eyes. TS870 has a genuine RF-clipper with real monitoring. But K3 seems to have these and much more. I wait for mine and look forward for manual published here. Benny OH9NB ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
