Re: [Elecraft] K3 MD command question

2021-04-17 Thread Bob Applegate
Thanks for all the emails, and I did finally realize there is a simple solution
to my problem. BTW, I did RTFM. Band memories? Done that years ago. I am an
engineer by profession, but the Elecraft (and any other modern) rigs are
complicated and it’s easy to miss things or not interpret things the right way.

For may years I was only on CW and sideband so I used the VFOs to hold the
proper settings per mode. Worked perfectly, filled my needs, rarely needed the
other VFO while on either mode.

When I went to digital modes the instructions were to use USB, so I did. Tried
DATA and DATA-REV without success, so I wrote those off and went back to USB
and tweaked computer drive level settings until everything worked on FT8, FT8
and other digital modes. Never tried DATA again.

So the answer to my problem was to just use DATA… now that all the external
settings were correct, DATA worked perfectly, so today I’ll get the proper
modes set for all the bands again and everything will be perfect.

Thanks for the help.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 MD command question

2021-04-16 Thread Bob Applegate
A number of people have asked what I am trying to do with the macros, so here
is a quick explanation. In a normal day I'm switching between CW, digital and
sideband frequently. CW is easy: VFO B is always set the way I want it for CW.

Digital and sideband have to share VFO A (too bad there isn’t a VFO C). To
make the switching easier, I created two macros and assigned each to either PF1
or PF2.

Macro 4 (sideband): front panel mic input with bias, VOX off, compression at
15, receive bandwidth at 2.8 KHz.

Macro 5 (digital): line in, VOX on, compression at 0, bandwidth at 4 KHz and
USB.

If I’m on bands where USB is the norm for sideband then Macro 4 sets up
everything perectly. However, for bands were LSB is the norm, I need to add a
press of ALT to get back to LSB. That is why I’m looking for a command to set
the “right” mode for sideband based on the band.

Is there a way to do this that I just haven’t seen? To bad there isn’t a MD
parameter for selecting the normal sideband mode for the current band. Or
maybe there is?

[Elecraft] K3 MD command question

2021-04-16 Thread Bob Applegate
I’ve been trying to set up a macro to automatically choose the correct sideband
(USB/LSB) for the current band but have not found a way to do this. The MD
command allows specifying the mode, but there does not appear to be an option
to select the “proper” sideband mode for the current band. There is no method
to query the current frequency and do a conditional MD command.

Is there a way to do this?

BTW I am using the Programmer’s Reference Rev G5, 2/20/2019.

Thanks & 73

[Elecraft] Another thank-you to Elecraft customer support

2014-02-10 Thread Bob Applegate
I recently ordered a K3 and had a problem with the order. I called Elecraft and
talked to Mike, who tracked down the problem, and had it taken care of in about
5 minutes. Two days later my K3/10 arrived.

The box arrived Saturday afternoon and by noon on Sunday I made my first contact
with it :-) Building it was well-worth the time. The instructions were clear,
photos added enough detail to answer my question, and there was only one step
that wasn't clear but a Google search found the answer. If anyone is lurking on
the list and trying to decide if the kit is doable, it wasn't difficult at all.
My 15 year old was impressed that his old man could build something that cool
;-)

I had another commitment and couldn't make the net yesterday, but hopefully next
Sunday K3 #8017 will be on!

Wayne... I sent a thank you to Mike this morning, but please thank him again
for me!

Re: [Elecraft] New KX3 Owners

2012-05-01 Thread Bob Applegate
I'm kind of curious as to how many KX3 owners are also first time Elecraft
owners. Seems like, based on some of the conversation, it's a fairly high
number. I don't know exactly what to attribute that to, but I suspect
more than a little of it is due to the success of the K3.

I’m a new Elecraft owner, at least I will be once my KX3 appears :)

I can’t speak for others, but the K3 isn’t what drew me in. The K3 is an
amazing rig, but I’ve got a number of very nice HF rigs already and can’t
justify yet another, but the KX3 has exactly the right features I need for
a specific application: portable QRP SSB.

Yes, I know QRP SSB isn’t as fun as CW, but I do a lot with local Boy
Scouts and wanted a portable rig to take camping, toss a wire into a tree,
and get on the air. A cool little rig like the KX3 will provide an
excellent example of what ham radio is about. CW is fun when you know how
to copy it, but it’s just “dots and dashes” to the average scout. I can’t
remember how many times I’ve explained SOS consists of dits and dahs, NOT
dots and dashes!

We camp about once a month, so part of my camping gear will soon consist
of a KX3, portable antenna, a gel cell and a solar panel. At last night’s
meeting one of the scouts said he wants to get his ticket; hopefully
getting some of the guys on the air at camp in the middle of the woods
will inspire a few more to look at ham radio as a fun hobby. A new ham
you work in a couple months might have been fired up by making his first
QSO in front of a KX3 near a camp fire.
