I use Klipsch Image X10 headphones with my KX-1they are absolutely the best headphones I have ever used. http://www.klipsch.com/na-en/products/image-overview/ They are not cheap, but you can find them for less than retail at most higher end audio stores. I know that Koss earbuds have been recommended on the list before, but I assume they too are too large for my ears. The Optimus ones are 0.65 or 16.4 mm in diameter. I do have a pair of Sony MDR-W14 that came with an armband gym type radio. They are connected with an adjustable springy strap over the top of the head (I have seen them worn in other ways too). They are comfortable although the parts at the ears are the same size as the earbuds. They just don't need to be retained by the ears; the flexible strap keeps them from falling off. The problem is that these are less sensitive than the earbuds, and the KX1 doesn't have gain to spare. My question is: Is there a headset that is physically similar to the very light Sony headset but with better sensitivity? Or, is there a brand of sensitive earbuds with a smaller diameter or a soft body? There is a Yahoo group called CW-CODE-WARRIORS that has a ton of data on building Mag Loops, as well as numerous builders that have had great success with the antenna from all over the world. You screw the rod in to increase C and out to decrease. Using these strictly guesstimations, I found I had good SWR across the entire 20 meter band with about 1.7:1 on the edges. I mounted it on an 8' aluminum mast which was also connected to the shield side of the coax. I got on with my little Yaesu FT-840 and in 5 minutes I had a pileup of stations wanting an explanation for my report of an 18 vertical. I guess the efficiency must have been only a couple of percent. But, there it was, the smallest possible vertical for 20 meters! I worked about 15 countries that afternoon with it. Doug -- K0DXV Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: I'd like to be clear when I wrote earlier that a small transmitting loop is very inefficient. I didn't mean they don't work, only that they only radiate a small part of the RF applied to them compared to a larger antenna. Consider a typical mobile whip antenna. They're terribly inefficient too but people get out with them, sometimes working DX when band conditions are good. Of course mobiles generally run more than the 10 watts or so a K2 produces, but contacts are made with QRP power and such antennas all the time. One way to make a given antenna larger is to use a higher frequency band. It's a matter of the antenna's size in wavelengths or fractions thereof that is important. That's why small antennas do so much better when the sunspots are active and the higher frequency bands are open. Re: [Elecraft] Band Conditions
The bands could be better, they could be worse. I think the real knowledge we have about propagation of radio waves is that it is always changing. In the NAQP yesterday, I worked CA, FL, and ME on 20 meters, in the late afternoon, with a homebrew fishing pole vertical, and my KX1 at about 3w. About an hour later, I worked CA, NY, and FL with the same antenna and my SW20+ at about 1.5w San Diego is about 2200 miles from meboth QSO's were with stations in San Diego. I also worked San Francisco. During NAQP the 20m band was buzzing with stations from all over. At about 5PM I tuned around 40m and there were stations everywhere. I worked LU5DYV in Argentina on June 10th, on 20m. I did it with a Anttron Hamwhip on my Taurus while driving across I-70 in Indiana. The rig, was the awesome KX-1 at about 2w. A few mins later I hear N5KY in QSO all the way from Albequrque NM...he gave me an honest to goodness 569 on my KX1 2w mobile. He was running 500w and was blowing my headphones off. GREAT fist. I would suggest if you want to work DX on 20m, you turn on the radio and do some listening for a bit. Seems like when it opens, it is really open...but it may only last 20-30 minutes. 73 = Radio Amateurs - Fill your junk box, from my junkbox! http://www.hamradparts.com 73 de KB9BVN = - Original Message - From: Karl Larsen [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Ron D'Eau Claire [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: 'Elecraft Reflector' elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, August 06, 2006 4:39 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Band Conditions Yes that is fun and 40 meters is where you will find activity at night if the noise is low enough. Iambic A or Iambic B? Generally, most ops seem to prefer Mode B as it is a bit more 'forgiving'. Tom, much as I hate to, I'm going to disagree a little here. The paddle timing is quite a lot more critical in mode B than in mode A, since holding the paddles closed just a *tiny* bit too long at the end of an iambic string will cause an unwanted dit or dah to be generated, even though the paddle for that dit or dah was not closed. In mode A, one gets a dit or dah ONLY if the paddle for the dit or dah has been closed. There's no advantage to mode B over mode A in terms of paddle manipulations required to generate a particular character, but mode B may allow the paddles to be released a tiny bit earlier than mode A would. I personally hate mode B, the mode that resulted from a logic flaw in an early electronic keyer that became advertised, a la Microsoft, as a feature. But, which ever mode one learns, the other will be hated. I'd recommend learning mode B over mode A, because some ham rig manufacturers (such as Yaesu) have been arrogant enough to include keyers in some of their rigs that function only in mode B. It's also obvious that, in some ham Morse-guru circles, some seem to consider the use of mode B as a sign of superiority. 73, Mike / KK5F ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Field Day - W8PIG 3A
Well as previously noted here, I participated in the ARRL Field Day event with the Flying Pigs QRP Club International from Caesar Creek State Park in Waynesville OH. On Friday night, before the event started, Ivin W9ILF, Dan N8IE, and I hooked the KX1 up to a 135 foot dipole about 50 feet up in the trees and tried a few test calls. Ivin got the Colorado QRP Club on 20m early on in the evening, and spent a few minutes chewing the rag. I managed to tag W2LJ on 40m until the QSB and QRM completely wiped us out...then Dan N8IE moved back to 20m and bagged a guy in Asiatic Russia for the highlight of the night. Keep in mind this was with less than 2w of juice coming out of the KX1. The rest of the weekend was a blur of operating, eating, eating, operating, eating, eating, and operating, and sleeping and eating. Could NOT have asked for better WX. It was cool at night, and warm to hot during the day. We ran QRP all weekend, using a couple of K2's and a FT890 turned down, plus the FT817 GOTA station of G8IFF. Nigel came over from the UK to work Field Day with us this year. Very nice guy, and a great SSB operator. We even had a few QSO's on 6m SSB and 2m SSB under 5w. All in all, it was a blast...can't wait for next June. 73 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. [Elecraft] Flying Pig Field Day
The Flying Pig QRP Club International is happy to announce the return of W8PIG. W8PIG will be alive and well during Field Day weekend, invading Caesar Creek State Park in Southwest Ohio. Once again we will be running 3AB or 4AB depending on who brings what. K2's and assorted other radio goodies will be present. Currently there are 21 Flying Pigs lined up and ready for take off, during this Field Day Extravaganza. We plan to operate the entire period. We will be on 6m VHF and for the first time we will attempt a satellite QSO. GOTA station is at the ready and we invite any ham or ham candidate to come to the park and operate with us. Plenty of rigs, bring your own chair. Team W8PIG will be at the Horseman GROUP Campground on the west side of Caesar Creek Lake. Saturday food: Biscuits and Gravy for breakfast, Bratwurst/Hot Dogs and Beans with Kraut for lunch, and WB6JBM is fixing us all a juicy steak for Saturday night. We'll be operating off natural power...sort of. Don, Thanks for the tip. I'll take a look at those. I was operating mobile with the KX1 and drove through a pretty strong thunderstorm, I was using a Anttron Hamwhip for 20m on the trunk mount. BIG storm comes along, I'm not running CW now, I'm driving and listening to CW and lots of static. So I shut off the rig and keep tooling on down the road. About 20 mins later I pull into Riley Park in Greenfield IN and and park so I can play radio...except the KXAT1 is saying I am only putting out .05 watts, then sometimes maybe .09 watts...SWR is like 8:1 now. So I move the car...I am in the clear...nothing metal near me...same thing. huh. When I get home I take the rig in to the radio room and attach it to the attic dipole, that never fails. I put it in auto tune mode...on 40m...SWR reads 9:1 on the KX1 but 1.2:1 on my external meter. I take it out of auto tune...do a manual tune...KXAT! says SWR is 9.9:1 and power out is less than half a watt...on a 14.0v power supply. So I go through the ATU setting, no error code (showing E00). I yank the KXAT1, jumper pins 1 and 3 on J7...which now makes it a KX1 without an internal ATU. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K1 or KX1?
I built the K1 first...used it a couple years, sold it, bought a already built KX1. Both are fantastic rigs. I miss my K1 and the 5w output though. I think this fall I will buy another K1 and build it. I will keep the KX1 for a long time, it fits in my shirt pocket...best camping rig I have ever had. 73 - Original Message - From: Jim Murray [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2006 7:29 PM Subject: [Elecraft] K1 or KX1? Hello all, Have been thinking about getting my feet wet with building either a K1 or KX1. I see most posts seem to refer to the KX1. Aside from size and portability is there any difference in performance in the two? I can work with either one but would prefer the one with best performance. K2 next- can't find much that beats it. [Elecraft] KX1 Issue
Any experts on KXAT1 debugging? Yesterday I had the KX1 in the car with the 20m hamstick and for about half the day I was about to work Florida, Mass, Texas...with 2w and the KX1. I was using the KXAT1 to tune my hamstick, even though I have the hamstick adjusted to 1.2 : 1 without the tuner. I connect it to my external antenna tuner/SWR meter and tune for 1:1 SWR and I'm getting almost 3w on 40m, 4w on 30m, and 2.8w on 20mlike normal...according to the external meter. Made a couple of QSO's and got 579 and 599...meter showing just about 3w as expected. So what happened to my KXAT1? Did the firmware take a dive? I also notice that when I transmit now, I only get one LED at the far left of the display to pop on...it used to show three or four...external meter shows 3w usually. I did reset to factory defaults, turned the 30m back on...maybe I don't know what the SIG settings should be... Anyone have any ideas? I have tuned C9 on the KXAT1 for the lowest DC voltage at the REFL point...I'm getting .62 vDC. I have stepped through the relays and they all click when activated, so I'm kind of stumped other than thinking the firmware got hosered up somehow in the storm. It will not tune to a dummy load...or at least the LED display says it won't. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
