[Elecraft] KDVR3 "AF play" stucked

2018-07-28 Thread C G
After recording for in excess of 90 seconds in my KDVR3/K3s, when I held "AF
play" I repetedly got a message "end" that I could not get rid off for a while,
even by turning the VFO B knob. Found no clue both in the manual nor the KE7X
handbook.

Finally after pushing a lot of DVR-related commands, it unlocked. Cannot figure
out how this happened exactly.

Maybe Waine had an idea?

Is this a bug?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Powers Off

2018-07-16 Thread C G
Hi Mike,

Did you check the powerpole connectors? On both sides: K3 and cable?

I experienced such power down when I changed my original 13.8V cord against a
self made one, shorter and with higher cross-section to avoid the voltage loss
in the cable. But the insulation was bigger than the powerpole inlet. As a
consequence the contact did fit completely to the edge.

[Elecraft] Very short 80m antenna

2017-01-22 Thread C G
Hi Vic,

Please also consider the current "MAG LOOP ANTENNAS" thread on this list which
fits your requirements as long as the loop is big enough (2 to 3m in diameter
at least).

[Elecraft] (OT) MAG LOOP ANTENNAS

2017-01-22 Thread C G
They are directional if you consider setting them vertically.

If placed horizontally they are not. Which could be meant as an advantage
especially if laid on an attic floor which is wider than high (a bigger loop
gives you better results in lower bands). BUT if mag loops are set that way,
they are said lossy if the ground is less than a quarter wave below.

Why in an attic? Avoids wind load, aesthetic dispute with your neighbors,
corrosion to the variable condenser and balun.

Advice: if you build one yourself ALL electrical connections must be silver
soldered (every milli Ohms is worth it) 'cause high currents (up to 50 Amps),
and access to the antenna should be strictly forbidden during transmit due to
high voltage (10 kV or so). See AA5TB's calculator.

Not usually mentioned: this should merely be considered as a transmit antenna
as your bandwidth could be as low as 2.5 kHz in lower bands. So NO panadapter
with a mag loop. Just forget it. Without a panadapter of course reciprocity
principle applies, but when you QSY, you quite soon won't hear anything until
remote re-tuning the loop. Therefore, when in-band searching around or want to
use a panadapter, you better may have a separate wideband receive antenna like
Beverage or K9AY. But you're lucky: the K3(s) has a separate receive antenna
input HI (just press "Rx ANT"). :)

See also the very helpful paper by the guru VK5LT:

[Elecraft] K3s missing right channel in "nor xxx" mode / digital level too low - BUG?

2016-12-30 Thread C G
Hi Al,

Thanks for your answer. Can't explain the logic behind this behavior. Would it
be a bug in firmware?...
Maybe this could be on the wish list then. For both requests ("nor" stereo AFX
*and* low digital level).
Santa's gone, but who knows?

[Elecraft] K3s missing right channel in "nor xxx" mode / digital level too low

2016-12-29 Thread C G
My K3s/10 has no sub-receiver option. I use two speakers plugged in the rear
jack that work perfectly. Firmware is up-to-date.

Now two issues:

In USB Audio (digital) or Line Out (analog), when setting the Config:Lin Out:
- in "=phones" I receive (pseudo-) stereo in my computer, but
- in "nor xxx" only the left channel remains. Is this on purpose or did I miss
a setting somewhere ?
I'd like to obtain pseudo-stereo AFX also in "nor xxx" mode (i.e. AF setting
has no influence)

Beside this, the digital level is too weak (-30 dB peak with AGC=on) in USB
audio. Would it be possible to rise the output level to AES/EBU Broadcast Audio
Standard, i.e. -18 or -20 dB (depending on countries), or even more, as dynamic
is lower for speech and therefore headroom can be reduced without clipping
consequences. That would mean additional A/D gain : +10 dB, + 12 dB, and maybe
+24 or +30 dB boost for weak signals?

Re: [Elecraft] K3s and ICOM IC-2KL

2016-11-21 Thread C G
Hi German,

Today the second-hand 2KL+2KLPS+AT500 arrived by post. Am under way cleaning
and checking the whole set. Later on, must check ALC's compatibility.

Now, have to build:
- a balun, because my sole present antenna is a Levy a.k.a. Zepp with a 300
ohms symmetrical feeder,
- a PA driver, as the 2KL is supposed to be driven by around 80 W, and my K3s
is a 10W version. Found some hackable PCB's on epay, adaptable to use my stock
power FET's.
- an automatic band switch interface, as the K3s outputs BCD, where the
2KL/AT500 are voltage driven. Already mounted a BCD decoder kit that I most
probably will link to the 2KL A/D converter **outputs** for reliability
reasons, by means of a diode matrix (+ DIL switches for configuration of
various antennae including multiband.)

Do you have issues with your Elecraft + Icom configuration?
