Re: [Elecraft] OT: Electronic curriculum for middle school wanted
Last September, I handed my then 12-year-old home-schooled son a copy of the ARRL book Tune in the World.. I had him go through it at his own pace, but with a deadline of approximately 6 weeks. I will admit, I wasn't using it as a course book, but it certainly did a good job of introducing him to basic electricity, etc. Later, in late October, he sat through one of the all-day No-Code classes. He said that the material was easier to handle having been introduced to it in the book first. And, of course, he nailed the exam. http://www.qrz.com/kg6wpe Anyway, I think it is a good intro. From here, I'm not sure what I'd use for a basic Electronics cirriculum, but I haven' lookd hard just yet.. Perhaps the Amateur Extra Study Guide? 73's, Chuck - n6dbt Note Craig Rairdin's stunning brilliance and Chuck's apt reply (gack!) The boys are 11 and 13 years old. I'd like something that covers the basics of electricity and electronics that includes some simple projects. In the end I'd like them to be able to take the Technician exam, so I'll have to supplement it with rules and operating practices. I'm also going to supplement it with basic home wiring just for fun. I'm not looking for a reference book, I'm looking for something that is intended to be taught from. It might even have student workbooks and other supplementary material. It doesn't have to be designed for home school; it can be designed for bigger classrooms or maybe even a teach yourself electronics book that includes projects. Ultimately (here's where we tie into topic of the Elecraft list) I'll have them each build a K1 or KX1 but there's a lot to learn before we get there. Any suggestions? [Elecraft] Peter Halpin - SK
This is from last weeks ARRL Letter, in case anyone missed it. I didn't see mention in the archives, so I thought I'd post it. Chuck - n6dbt * Pete Halpin, PH1PH/G7ECN, SK: Pete Halpin, PH1PH/G7ECN, of Hengelo, the Netherlands, died June 8. The co-developer with Simon Brown, HB9DRV, of the freeware Ham Radio Deluxe transceiver-control package, Halpin was considered its support and services guru. Licensed in 1982, Halpin was a retired aircraft technician who, in Brown's words, devoted copious free time to this project. He will be missed by everyone involved with Ham Radio Deluxe. The Radio Society of Great Britain recognized Brown and Halpin last year for their significant contribution to the development of Amateur Radio technology. Halpin also has received awards from the QRP Amateur Radio Club International, one for his low-power successes on 6 meters. He was a past director of No Code International. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Premature Emails on the Amp $$$
Being on e of the lucky folks that saw this jewel, I can say while it has indeed been shown (albeit to a select audience) it has not been announced. I haven't seen one email yet from our Buds in Aptos. When I saw it, Eric was looking for comment, input, and reaction. The unit was still being tested and evaluated, and his taget date was Dayton. Sounds like he's on track for that. Cut some slack guys. It will be worth the wait. I know...I know...it's tough. Re: [Elecraft] wiring motorola amplified speaker for K2
Tim, These speakers were designed to be driven by balanced audio. That's why the audio input names are a bit unusual. The squelch line was designed to mute the speaker, as was pointed-out in an earlier posting. I have had some trouble with mine being sensitive to RFI. I haven't got it licked yet, but I'm still trying. Chuck n6dbt #1924 Note Tim Logan's stunning brilliance and Chuck's apt reply (gack!) Two of the wires are referred to as audio up and audio down. The remaining 3 wires are for power supply and squelch..not sure how the two audio wires and squelch would get connected to a speaker jack for the K2..does this wiring resemble anyone's and if so how did you rig up the speaker? [Elecraft] Filter alignment
With my last few days of vacation time remaining, I decided to do one of those I'll do it later projects. Inspired by my shiny new Heil mic, I thought I'd visit all my filter calibrations and settings, as it hasn't been done since the original build. I've been to the Tech Notes page and saw Tom Hammond's updated procedures, as well as the one using a spreadsheet. So I'm asking you guys that have done this a lot and those who have done it recently. Should I use another procedure besides those posted? Comments?
