I am only a casual SSB operator, The K3 is a great radio for anyone. Tech support is the best. Re: [Elecraft] Hiss on K3 (Mike)
Mike, That was one thing I did not like on the K3. Other than setting up the EQ to filter out the highs. The fix that I did was to use a bigger 10 in speaker with more bass. All the smaller speakers will pick up the hiss that will drive you nuts. With the bigger speaker it has a nice bass sound to it. Hope this helps. [Elecraft] OT: Mac Vs Windows
I would just like to add one thing. I switched over to a Mac book pro intel duel core, 5 years ago. I just installed Mountain Lion about 2 weeks ago. ( only because I wanted to.) I always skip a year on upgrades. So I went from Snow to Mountain Lion. Mountain Lion works great on my computer. I always do a new install by formatting the hard drive. clean every thing out. This is a pain in the butt if you forget to save anything. Re: [Elecraft] RF Noise in the Neighborhood
I Guys, I know how frustrating this can be. I had the same problem with a power line this last summer. You can have noise miles away off of a power line on the HF bands. Most utility company's have a department to track down RFI interference. They have equipment that will track it down to the insulator or bolt on a pole. Most PLC's Powerline Comminication have been installed for many years. Most PLC's are on mayor power lines and not on a normal over head line that is in the Neighborhood. Plus they only send a TX signal for Blocking and or Tripping. I understand if you have Internet over power lines, this can be a big problem. Call you utility company, they can help clean it up. That should basically work fine. You might consider an interface to do PTT explicitly, rather than VOX, but if VOX is working for you If you only have one sound card in the computer, you probably want to turn of system-generated sounds, so you won't be transmitting those bloops and dings on the air (either mixed in with your digital data or by themselves w/ VOX!). Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices -> Sounds -> Sound scheme -> No Sounds A second sound card (or USB audio device), dedicated to digital modes, could be a good investment. Any power supply that has a VFO knob built in means they either don't know how to get harmonics down to the proper level or don't want to spend a few bucks on components, so they took the cheap way out. I have several switching supplies and can't hear any of them anywhere unless I run an antenna right in the room. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 on Order
I did not know about the Power-werx SS-30DV. I will look into this one as well.I would very much like a switching supply. Because I don't have a normal Ham shack. I use my home office as the radio room with not much room for radio's. My concern for any Switching supply is the RFI noice that the radio will pick up from the power supply. Looking at the SEC 1235m, I was reading that it has a build in RFI filter. Plus I like the AD5X mod to slow down the fan. And the Alinco DM-340 MVT has a knob to change the freq. of the noise that the radio is picking up. I think that the DM-340 MVT is a bit over kill. I am only looking for a PS that will power the radio only. I have not tried to use it to float charge a battery and the Mfg. was not clear if it would work in this application. If anyone is looking for a radio that will never have a problems. This will be a good time to get out of ham radio. Any Man made product at some time will have a problem. Computers, Cameras,TV's or whatever! How many times has you new car been to the shop? What makes elecraft stand out from the rest!! Is the fact that they stand behind there product 100% in warranty or out. Every person that is a K3 owner will help you fix your radio if needed. What other Company will give you this kind of support? I will be buying my K3 in Aug. Because of the support from elecraft and this group. If you like the K3 for the way it looks and all the good reviews that you read on E-ham Then go for it. It is great to do reviews and there is not anything wrong with doing this. Re: [Elecraft] (OT) Grounding Mat
I am just going to keep it simple. I live in Idaho and the air is very dry. I get a spark just turning the light off. Thanks Chris From: Don Wilhelm To: Lew Phelps K6LMP Cc: Elecraft Sent: Wed, March 24, 2010 8:47:59 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] (OT) Grounding Mat Lew and all, I would be *very* uncomfortable with a fully conducting sheet of metal on the top of my workbench - I even consider it dangerous. If I were to touch that surface with one part of my body and accidentally touch a source of voltage with another part, current will flow through my body. Just how dangerous that is depends on the voltage - but current can maim and kill too (see below). A fully conductive workbench surface negates the user protection that is offered by the 1 megohm resistance in a wrist strap. That 1 megohm resistor is there to limit the current if one contacts a high voltage source, but still will be effective for dissipating a static charge. The mat should be sufficiently conductive to bleed off static, but not a zero resistance conductor. In other words, the mat should be "static dissipating", but not a fully conducting surface. Just because we are working with low voltage supplies does not make it safe. A short on a high current capacity power supply or a battery (they have LOTS of stored energy) can and will cause BIG sparks and flying molten metal. A proper ati-static mat will bleed of a voltage source slowly and poses no danger. Yes, the anti-static mat should be connected to ground - but there is no need to go overboard on the grounding thing. A connection to the grounding conductor (green wire ground) of the power distribution system is more than adequate. You should of course determine that the green wire ground is actually intact. One of the inexpensive AC receptacle testers will tell you whether or not it is connected properly. Yes, those who have stated that the important thing is to keep everything at the same potential are entirely correct. Take ICs out of the anti-static wrapping and place them directly on the anti-static mat, then touch the mat before picking that part up - if you are using a tool to pick it up, place the tool in contact with the mat before touching the part. It is just common sense - give the static a chance to drain off before touching sensitive parts. 73, Don W3FPR Lew Phelps K6LMP wrote: > For myself, since I had it handy, I use a large sheet of copper that is > connected by copper braid to the ground bus in my shack --a 2" diameter > copper pipe, about 3 feet long, which in turn is connected by 4/0 cable to a > series of copper stakes driven six feet into the ground, and also tied (at > the far end from the shack) to the ground wire on the household distribution > panel.
