[Elecraft] k3/100 Newcomer

2009-12-25 Thread Ci Jones
I recently built the barebones K3 after cancelling my order about two
years ago. Instead, I went from a Ten Tec Orion to a Ten Tec Omni VII
due to the backlog in orders and wanting to wait and see how the radio
developed. As I stated in a review, the Omni VII was the the best and
friendliest radio I have owned in almost six years as a ham. I have
built and still own a K2/100, KX1 and K1--all great rigs for the
purposes they are meant to serve.

After operating the K3 QRP CW for several weeks, I went ahead and
ordered (and have installed) the Power Amp and internal Auto Tuner
along with some roofing filters for CW. While Ten Tec is a great
American company with great staff and equipment, for my purposes of
casual operating and contests with a little DX and lots of QRP,
Elecraft is the best in my book.

Being a retired clergyperson and part-time CPA, I am not a technical
ham operator (probably like most people reading this reflector).
Reading the postings about the "noisy" K3 were helpful in some ways and
frightening in others. But the crucial part of my posting here is that
my K3 was noisier than my Ten Tec rigs until I installed the roofing
filters. Now, it is either as quiet or quieter than either the Orion or
the Omni VII. If you are reading this note and have been scared off by
other postings by more technical members of the group, rest assured the
K3 is an absolutely wonderful radio and well worth the money invested
in it. You can trust both the technical folks here, and especially the
folks at Elecraft.

When the geniuses at Elecraft figured out how to make my KX1 function
on 80 meters after having been compactly designed for 20, 30 and 40
meters, I knew I was hooked and would probably own at least one of each
of their kits. I have nothing but appreciation and admiration for such
as wonderful company of people as Elecraft.73, Ci

Re: [Elecraft] K3 how often do you use it?

2010-01-09 Thread Ci Jones
Same here, but about 25 hours a week. Having sold an Orion and bought
the K3, I did it in part because of its nice size and ergonomics. I
love this radio, and I have only had it about a month now. But I guess
I am weird in that I still really like my K2...

Randy,

I use my K3 probably 30+ hours per week and I find it superbly suited
for my
purposes. A bigger box with more knobs I don't need but that's just me.
 YMMV.

[Elecraft] K3/100 transmit gain configuration problem

2010-10-06 Thread Ci Jones
I am helping a friend build his K3/100. When doing the transmit gain
calibration, everything calibrates on five watts, but on fifty watts, all bands
calibrate except for 17 meters. It appears the SWR is high to the radio on this
band and the wattage output will not settle (the verbiage used by the program).
All else, including transmitting at high power on this band, seems to be fine.
Any suggestions as to what may be the problem? Thanks, Ci, WU7R

[Elecraft] New Utility Problem

2011-01-23 Thread Ci Jones
After downloading the new utility program, I notice when using the terminal
function, I am getting garbage characters rather than the decoded RTTY or
PSK31. These seem to be TB000 and similar numbers and letters. I am using the
utility with my K3 #3720 with the P3 and most recent firmware. I din't have
these characters until I downloaded the new utility and firmware. Any
suggestions will be appreciated...73, Ci Jones, WU7R

[Elecraft] P3 and K2

2012-01-10 Thread Ci Jones
Is thee any progress on use of the K2 with a P3 so it communicates in a way
similar to the K3? This was discussed when the P3 made its debut, but I haven't
seen anything since then. Any advice would be appreciate. I use the P3 with my
K2, but a lot ofthe advantage is missing...thanks, and 73, Ci

[Elecraft] K144XV

2010-02-07 Thread Ci Jones
I would appreciate hearing the opinion of members of this group on an
issue I am facing. I just downloaded the manual for the K144XV since I
am considering this upgrade. As I understand it, it is an all mode ten
watt transceiver, and it costs about $300.00. In order to use it, I
will also have to buy a KXV3A for $140.00 and a KFL3B-FM for $126.00.
For a total of $560.00, I will have access to two meters with my K3. I
will also be able to listen to frequencies outside of the amateur
bands. I am wondering (and this is what I need your opinions on) why
this would be a better buy for me than another transceiver dedicated to
VHF and UHF and putting out considerably more power? In other words,
what are the benefits and uses of me purchasing this option (these
options) for my K3? I appreciate your comments. Thanks and 73, Ci

[Elecraft] WTB KAT2 Tuner

am turning my K2 back into my main QRP rig for travel. I can make
immediate payment and accept payment through Paypal. I am also willing

[Elecraft] K2 & P3 Question

2011-07-16 Thread Ci Jones
I am using my P3 with my K2 when I travel. Are there any plans to revise the K2
firmware to communicate with the P3 in a way similar to the way my K3 works? I
realize this may not be a big priority except for a few of us, and I have no
idea how difficult it would be. But it would certainly help sell more P3's I
would think...
