Re: [Elecraft] New Contest Transceiver [OT]
There is way less casual CW operation than there was in '79, '89, and even '99. Except for contesting and DXing, CW is close to being dead. Foreign phones, RTTY data stations in the lower portions of the CW bands and the ARRL/FCC elimination of CW-testing will finish it off. If I thought there was any future in casual CW operation, I would have a K3 on order now. Dave N7AF K2 #4795 On Wed, 19 Mar 2008 13:50:03 -0400 Michael Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Although there isn't as much cw on during non-contest times as there was when I was licensed in '79, there are a number of ragchews going on during the day on 40m during the day and some dx at night/early morning here in the Midwest. I'd like for the people who think CW is dead to listen to the ARRL 160 contest, or any major contest for that matter. Even though the daily activity may be down, I think we will continue to have decent cw activity in our lifetimes anyway. I think someone mentioned it earlier, and I don't want it to be taken in the wrong context, but if the bands are jam packed on 40m, 30 meters is a great band. I think it's better to go to 30m for cw qso's then it is to get your blood pressure up because 40 meters is jam packed with signals. Also maybe the contest managers can try to keep major cw and rtty contests on different dates, although I'm sure this is getting harder and harder 73, Mike K9MI ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Re: K3 AM operation with FM roofing filter?
Does anyone know the answer to this? Can the FM roofing filter be used when transmitting AM to save the cost of an additional filter for a rarely used mode? Re: [Elecraft] Way OT - eBay - HELP
Geoff, Everyone has pretty much covered the topic on the phony messages. I've gotten them too. However, your comment about contacting a real live person at eBay is a good one. They are there but apparently days behind answering inquiries. Since time is a major issue when dealing on eBay, you need timely help when there is a problem. The problem is you can't get it when you need it. That is poor customer service in my opinion and I no longer use eBay for that reason. If Elecraft or the company I work for treated customers like eBay does, we'd be out of business! 73, Dave N7AF - Original Message - From: Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft Discussion List elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, May 31, 2006 2:10 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Way OT - eBay - HELP Sorry about this OT. Re: [Elecraft] Rework Eliminators
Had these been available when I built my K2, I would be more enthusiastic about adding options. The one feature of the K2 I don't care for is the heat sink and mounting of the final transistors. I don't relish the thought of taking the heat sink on and off and messing with those little washers and pads to add each option. If I were to build another one with the thought of adding options, I would definitely consider the rework eliminators. 73, Dave N7AF - Original Message - From: Charlie, W0YG [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, March 22, 2006 8:30 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Rework Eliminators Mike, AI4NS, wrote: I ordered the complete kit for the partially assembled K2 I just bought. Re: [Elecraft] CW in Emergencies?
The disadvantage of no-code is that if new hams aren't required to learn CW, how are they going to be able handle emergency traffic from our low-powered battery-operated K1's and K2's? Since emergencies are one of our reasons for being and CW gets through with simple equipment where other modes won't, aren't we shooting ourselves in the foot by eliminating the CW requirement? I'll answer this since the experts don't seem to be available at the moment. 1. Yes, you should be able to receive signals on the 40-meter band. 2. You should have full headphone volume now. [Elecraft] Listening to SSB on K2 without KSB2
Is the K2 unsuitable for listening to SSB if the KSB2 isn't installed? 73, Dave N7AF The SSB filter is much more pleasant to use than the CW filter set for a wide bandwidth. The SSB filter has a flat passband, whereas the CW filter, being varactor controlled, develops a lot of ripple by the time you widen it out. We experimented with variations on the filter topology before releasing the K2 to production, but it was getting too complex. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I use the variable filter as a narrow SSB receive filter to combat high pitched QRM (1.8, 1.7 or 1.6 kHz widths), but it does OK out to about 2.2 or 2.3 kHz. The passband is relatively flat up to about 1.2 kHz and above that the ripple becomes progressively greater as the width is increased. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- Is the K2 unsuitable for listening to SSB if the KSB2 isn't installed? 73, Dave N7AF The SSB filter is much more pleasant to use than the CW filter set for a wide bandwidth.
