Re: [Elecraft] denatured alcohol vs. Everclear

2021-07-17 Thread Don Roberts via Elecraft
We used Vodka for cleaning VHF and UHF broadcast transmitters. Told by RCA
engineers that that is what was in their expensive bottles sold to radio
stations. Other alcohol agents left a residue that would eventually arc over.

[Elecraft] lightning protection

2021-01-23 Thread Don Roberts via Elecraft
In addition to everything else suggested, I disconnect all coax cables outside
my home and let them lay on the ground. I  use a trailer type connector to
unplug my antenna rotator. I further use a heavy duty DPDT switch for my full
wave 80 meter loop, not to ground but to open. (lightning doesn't see my
antennas any more than the coffee cup in my hand)

Keep in mind that I live on the ridge in south central Florida running down the
center of the state from Lake Wales to the north and sloping to the south into
the Everglades. (From Tampa to here is the lightning capital of the western
hemisphere) We are second in the world to a location in south eastern Africa
for lightning strikes.
In the 25 years I have lived here we have had several hams get hit by lightning
that followed code to a "T" including a perimeter wire completely surrounding
their home and tied to the main electrical ground, towers, polyphasers and or
lightning arrestors bounded to at least 10 foot rods going into our sandy soil.

In the most recent hit, a good friend and local ham in Lake Placid had his home
burn completely to the ground, with his wife just narrowly escaping the
inferno. He had everything grounded correctly including a 4 gauge perimeter
wire completely surrounding his home. John's 120 foot tower was not hit and his
coax cables and pl259/s were not scorched.
In his case the lightning hit the Duke power company line coming into his home
and exploded into his house with a massive hole, and according to the state
inspector it was textbook 101, blowing through all electrical outlets in his
home at the same time. His wife had less then 30 seconds to get out. By the
way, John KK4LI, installs towers, and antennas for a living. He also conducts
classes on lightning protection at the Tampa hamfest.
Of further interest, our number one item for getting hit in our area seems to
be Dish and Direct satellite dishes.

[Elecraft] KPA500 failure

2019-05-12 Thread Don Roberts via Elecraft
While getting ready for the Elecraft net today my KPA500 would not transmit. In
bypass mode swr is 1:1. When placing in operate mode I get no output with my K3
showing high swr. Tried my loop,  vertical, and Hex beam. All show low swr on
the K3, KAT500 and the KPA500 in bypass.
I took the KAT out of circuit and no change. Unhooked all antennas and then
reattached one at a time, no joy. Ran a new coax between K3, KPA500, and then
just between the K3 and KPA500 and got the same thing.
Can run 100 watts out with K3 with low swr on all my hf antennas as long as
KPA500 is bypassed. When I put it in operate I get no output and K3 shows high
swr. It has been working flawless on all bands and modes. Usually run 28 to 32
watts input for around 500 out.
Anyone have any ideas on what might have happened. Thanks for any thoughts..

Lee, it looks like your inverted L wire has stretched. Check with an antenna

[Elecraft] ARRL book on receiving antennas

2018-09-09 Thread Don Roberts via Elecraft
Having been a ham since 1956, I also agree from my experience, that I along
with every ham I knew, used the same antenna to receive and transmit. From my
first home brew one tube, through my first Globe Chief kit, through Globe
Scout, NCX3, and Globe GTX 550, all in the 50/s and into the 60/s, and all had
the same antenna for receive and transmit. I too, went from the dpdt knife
switch, to the Dow Key relay. My QSL collection  confirms this for the stations
worked during that period.

[Elecraft] K3 No power out

2018-08-14 Thread Don Roberts via Elecraft
Yes I can set it at 35 watts which is what I usually use to drive the KPA 500,
and speak in the mic for ssb and get no power out. In cw at the same 35 watts,
when I send code either straight key or padfle. 0 watts out. Same results if I
attempt to run bearfoot at 100 watts or 5 watts, I get no power out. Receive is
working fine, the P3 is working normal, and the KPA 500 and KAT 500 track bands
as I change them.
I will try again tomorrow after a night of sleep. If still no go, will phone
home to Elecraft

[Elecraft] K3 No power out

2018-08-14 Thread Don Roberts via Elecraft
I have enjoyed the wisdom of this group and have learned so much but now it is
my time to ask for help. My K3 is showing no power out. I have the K line. The
relay clicks when going from 11 to 12 watts. I can set the power up to 110, but
when I hit tune I get zere watts shown and verified by my watt meters. Makes no
difference of mode, band, dummy load, resonant ant, or multiband hex beam, 80
meter horizontal loop, or 40 meter vertical. There is no output to tune
anything.
My last contacts showed no problems. Worked 10 meter cw, 20 and 6 meter ssb ok
just two days ago.  It seems to be receiving fine. The P3 display is normal,
the KAT 500 and KPA 500 change bands with the K3 as they normally do. I have
rebooted the K3 several times and have killed the master AC power to everything
only to bring it up to the same thing. The ALC, compression, mic gain all
register correct, where I always run them. I have checked to make sure the Test
button has not been ingaged. Press XMIT and all I get is 0 W.  I am sure I have
forgotten something simple. Would appreciate any help.  Thanks

[Elecraft] Massive opening on 10 and 6

Wayne, thank you for the reminder about adding memories on 6 meters. After
reading your note I added 50.130, 50.135, 50.140 and 50.145 per your
suggestion. This morning, after a sked on 20 I checked the calling freq on 6

the 4. Soon I had new grid squares from PA, VT, and Ontario from my EL97 here

[Elecraft] Back up power

2018-07-19 Thread Don Roberts via Elecraft
Living in Sebring Florida and having survived ground zero for three cat 2 to 3
hurricanes in 13 years including Irma, I have had good results running a back
up generator shared with my next door neighbor.
I have switched from whole house AC to mini splits. My Florida room has a 110v
minisplit by Desuki that I was able to use to keep the room at 72 degrees
during a 10 day power outage.
On the same line I ran plugin lights in the room, tv system, line to main house
refrigerator, and into my shack to run my K-line barefoot, where I relayed
weather info between county EOC and National Weather Center, as well as traffic
into and out of National Hurricane Center.
My wife and I enjoyed our two recliners in comfortable conditions until the
power was restored. The AC mini splits have now replaced my central AC in the
whole house and my utility bill has dropped by one third.
