What makes the KE7X Elecraft book different than the Elecraft owner’s
 manuals?
Let’s start by saying the KE7X books do not have any information needed to
operate the radios that is not in the Elecraft Owner’s manuals. Owner’s
manuals are by design succinct and concise descriptions of the controls
and features of the radio. Elecraft manuals are very well done but I
found during my 40+ years as an EE prof that there are various ways that
people learn. Some are visual learners and learn by seeing diagrams and
images, some can gain comprehension just be reading. Others are more
hands-on learners, needing the “lab experience” to cement their
understanding of the concepts. I’m a visual and hands-on learner. When I
first got my K3 I had trouble understanding how the sub receiver worked
and what the different antenna switching options were. So I drew it out
in a diagram and that made it much more clear to me. If that helped me,
wouldn’t it help others? So the idea of a K3 book was born. (The
original title was to be “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the K3” but I got
 talked out of that!)
The concept that takes these books beyond the Elecraft manuals is support
for the visual, reading, and doing learning styles. There are many,
many diagrams. In the K3S book there are 131 diagrams, 16 on the sub
receiver alone. There are expanded explanations (and diagrams) for all
radio operations and in-depth explanations of topics such as the various
controls for the receiver’s AGC. And to top it all off, most topics have
a “lab exercise” that you can do sitting at your radio to make sure you
 understand the concept.
The printed versions of the books all have an index and, of course, the
pdf versions can be easily searched for what you are looking for.

It probably doesn't matter Al, the lines are likely in your antennas near field

In the Lao (and Thai) language, there are no plural forms. It would be either

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] KX2

I use an EFHW on 80-10, no dedicated counterpoise, no coax length rqmts.
However, NEC2 doesn't like a source at the open end of a wire so to model it, I
have to put some counterpoise on the wire. Length not critical, 5-10 ft is fine.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] Audio/noise diversity/phasing question

2015-08-13 Thread Fred C. Jensen
I used Bose noise cancelling phones in the 90's while doing around 250K miles a
year on United. They cut the steady aircraft noise nicely, mainly the higher
pitched part, not so good on the LF rumble. It seemed the steady higher
frequencies were responsible for the headaches. On my radio, they were
ineffective with IF atmospheric static, and almost ineffective against power
line noise.

I'd guess that much of the LF rumble was conducted thru my body rather than
through the air.

Full disclosure: My hearing was already severely compromised, the higher
frequency steady noise was weakly audible to me without the phones and absent
with them. However, it apparently still gave me headaches on transcontinental
flights without the phones.

Fred K6DGW

phil anderson aldenmcduf...@sunflower.com wrote:
HI JERRY,

You may be thinking of the Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones. These operate at
audio and an extra microphone is added to each earbud to pick up background
audio in your hamshack or workplace. I'm guessing that the signal from one of
these added microphone earbuds is then inverted; and, in turn each earbud adds
the signal from its extra microphone to the audio signal from the phone's
audio output. In that way, the external noise is cancelled when listening to
both phones.

One way one might utilize this process in diversity mode using two radio
receivers within one radio - like in a K3 or K3s - is to offset receiver B
from receiver A, such that receiver B is only receiving noise. Then sum the
inversion of that in an external audio circuit with the output of receiver A
to receive just the CW signal generated by receiver A. This in effect would
cancel the noise from each receiver similarly to that with the Bose.

Right now I'm using the K3 in diversity mode by receiving RXB via the AUX
input (with a Beverage antenna) and RXA via ANT1 port (with a SteppIR
vertical) and letting the K3 process the audio in its native diversity mode.
To this I'm also utilizing the APF feature. It's an easy guess that this beats
out the scheme described above. However, if might simply be fun to try the
adhoc method. 73, Uncle Phil, W0XI, Lawrence, KS.

Subject: [Elecraft] Audio/noise diversity/phasing question

I've read where a received signal is split into two signal paths, the noise
is somehow shifted 180 degrees (not sure how without affecting the desired
signal), the two signals are fed to your headset, one to each side, somehow
our brains then perceive the signal to POP out of the noise. Does this apply
to the K3/S ? I'm very interested in anything that effectively results in a
higher signal to noise.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft] K3: 630m amplifiers

2015-07-26 Thread Fred C. Jensen
Umm ... JT65 is MFSK, 1 freq at a time, no different than FSK, just more than
2, 1 at a time. Should be constant envelope, my JT65 sure is on the scope as
is my RTTY signal. There may be some 2nd order effects, but Class C should
basically work.

Sometime back, a FW update has the Tuner following as you tune. You don't have

I think this is more or less in place now. If you put the tuner in manual

you tune to a different location it automatically will load the existing tune
settings.
What I have done is a manual tune every 20 kHz or so and kept the tuner in
manual. Thus it always locks  the settings.

A Tap and Hold on the Tune button would lock the tuning solution in place.

 be very effective at times.

Thank you for your consideration and happy Easter.

Yes, I know all about digital modes and full power stressing amplifiers,
etc. What I want to know is how to mitigate this interruption yet run full
output. To that end, I have a couple ideas: what if I mounted the amp
vertically so the heatsink fins drew cooler air through themselves via
convection? Secondly, would a couple muffin fans mounted atop the cooling fins
 do
the job?
The net of this is that I'd like to enjoy the full benefit of having a
high-quality 100-Watt amplifier, regardless of mode or key-down time.

Re: [Elecraft] Problem Firmware and K3

2012-12-26 Thread Fred C. Jensen
I save a configuration reset point just /before/ loading new firmware since,
despite writing changes to the last reset point in my notebook, I always manage
to forget one or two. Admittedly, this results in 2 classes of reset points on
the computer, before and after. My K3 is s/n 642. Early on, I applied all
FW updates. Now, I read the Release Notes first and apply those that do
something that affects me. Hence, I don't have that many reset points to
manage.

Happy New Year to all,

Bill and all,

I have done many firmware upgrades to my K3 as a firmware field tester
than have many other users. I only once had a problem because I
interrupted the process - so that was my fault. Following the
instructions (in both the manual and K3 Utility help file) to force a
firmware download provided quick and easy relief. No need for an EEINIT.

Yes, if you choose to do an EEINIT, know that you will have to set all
the menu parameters and do the calibration steps again. If you have
saved a configuration file, that is a snap to accomplish, just use K3
Utility to restore that configuration. If you do not have a saved
configuration file, then the process is manual and laborious.

Bottom line - save a configuration. You might want to do that after
each firmware upgrade. In most cases, that is a just in case file
(like a backup of your computer files), and will never be used.

Keep your K3 firmware up to date. 99.9% of the time there will be no
complications. It is only the remaining few that we hear about on this
reflector.
