[Elecraft] 5mHz

2013-03-10 Thread G4LNA
I have searched for this question and I can't seemed to see if it has been
asked before, which I'm surprised about.
My K3 presently tunes from 5330.00 kHz to 5407.00kHz but the UK band now has
a range of frequencies from 5258.50kHz to 5403.50kHz, so when I tune below
5330.00kHz I get the out of band message if I try and transmit below that
frequency.

Are there any plans to update the firmware to take into account the extra
frequencies?

[Elecraft] K3 utility and Lbuntu 12.04

2012-06-04 Thread G4LNA
I did have a search for this, but I found no other replies, so I'm wondering
if anyone else is having the same problem.

I recently installed LBuntu 12.04 on my netbook which I use for updating the
K3, previously it had 10.04 LTS and the K3 utility worked fine, but now with
Lbuntu it doesn't seemed to work. The utility opens but it wouldn't pick up
the USB port connection.

I spent a couple of hours last night trying all different things, it seems
like Lbuntu no longer seems to recognise ttyUSB1, I even tried installing
PuTTY to see if I could change the settings using that, but no.

The only way I could get around the problem was to install Ubuntu 9.10 on a
separate small partition of its own and presto, without touching anything it
worked, just a bit of a nuisance having two operating systems when one
should do.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 utility and Lbuntu 12.04

2012-06-04 Thread G4LNA
Thanks for that Dick, I think the only real difference is the Desktop, the
Lbuntu is the light version of Ubuntu which as it doesn't have the glossy
graphics heavy Desktop. I haven't tried it on the Desktop PC as it means
lugging the radio downstairs to the main computer, that's the reason why I
use the Netbook.

I don't really want to put Ubuntu 12.04 on the Netbook as it slows it down
quite a bit, I might have to stick with the work around for now.

Hi Adrian, I did that last night and it was picking it up, this morning I've
been comparing it with the Desktop PC and there is no difference between the
two as far as I can see, the listings are identical, so it should work.

I might give it another go later, we are going out in a moment, so I'll give

I'll post back later on how I get on.

Hello Robert,

I use a Samson stage mic, but I do use a lot of external audio gear for the
audio, it is a legacy from my home brew days when I used to use a phasing
TX, the audio was so good on that I have retained it on the present rig to
good affect.

As for the PTT, I use a miniature Morse key, when I'm not using it I just
tuck it under the rig out of the way.

[Elecraft] TX EQ oddity?

2010-12-28 Thread G4LNA

I can't seemed to see this posted elsewhere so I'm just wondering if it might
be a problem at my end, if someone else can confirm this please.

Key transmit then tap the Main Menu then scroll to TX EQ tap the Main Menu
button again to return to normal, I now find that when I go back to receive
the receive frequency has shifted HF by 1.6KHz, this is most disconcerting
when the QSO has effectively vanished. Luckily the station I was working was
strong and I noticed the edge of his signal so I was able to tune him in
with the RIT. The transmit frequency remains the same, it's only the the
receive frequency that shifts. When the radio is turned off then back on
again it all reverts back to normal.

I have confirmed this is happening with my signal generator.

Are you not supposed to fiddle with those menu controls when transmitting? I
had a look in the manual but couldn't see anything mentioning that, but I
might have missed it.

It's not a huge problem when I know about it.

Re: [Elecraft] Feature request - CW PTT

2010-12-28 Thread G4LNA

Hi Chris,

The Key output works as it should do, there is no output from it at all as
such. What it does do is in the transmit mode it will sink up to 200 volts
at 5 amps, so in other words if you have a 24 volt relay with one side of
the relay is connected to +24V and the other side connected to the centre
pin on the Phono plug, then every time you operate the PTT the relay will
activate, this is for operating any external equipment like linears or any
other equipment that needs to be operated on the PTT line. I use this port
to activate my linear, in my case I use a FET transistor as I have various
lines that need activating or de-activating as the case maybe.

Happy New Year Chris

I can't think what that can possibly be, I take it that you have monitored
the chirp yourself on a separate receiver to actually confirm the chirp is
there and not the result of a fault on the distant receiver? Just a thought,
have you tried removing the KXV3 and see if everything returns to normal?
Sorry just questions, no answers at the moment.

I'm sorry to report that only a few modes are presently allowed for

 firmware modification and re-testing.

 Is AM/SSB a common split?

Note that you can achieve this without using SPLIT if you have the
sub-receiver installed. For example, you could transmit/receive in SSB
mode on VFO A on one frequency, and receive AM on the sub on a
different frequency. If you want to hear only AM signals, adjust the
main and sub volume levels accordingly.

Thanks Wayne,

In that case it's strange that it was working before, but not now. I haven't
got the sub RX and probably won't get it anytime in the near future with the
exchange rates the way they are at present.

I wouldn't say it's exactly a common split, but it's really handy to insert
the carrier and receive the AM as a pseudo synchronous set-up, it cuts down
the noise and the fidelity is excellent, especially on the K3.

I'm not asserting anything, what I said applies to any rig you care to
mention, I don't believe meters. No matter what magic wizardry circuits or
software is contained in the rig to deceive to meter into reading power, you
can't beat seeing the peak power reading on an oscilloscope.

I did have a look at the peak output of my rig and notice the meter doesn't
correspond to the peak power reading on the K3, it doesn't even come close,
that doesn't worry me in the slightest because I don't use the meter for
power setting on anything apart from CW.

What I will assert is that every radio amateur should at least have an
oscilloscope as basic test equipment and learn how to use it, perhaps there
wouldn't be so many rubbish signals on the air, there again, if pigs

I'm not pointing a finger at you Julian, I think you may agree there are a
lot of amateurs who do rely on meters without understanding what is really
happening in the real world, because now a days they are not taught basic
understanding of what is happening to a modulated RF signal.

An oscilloscope is one of the main bits of test gear an RF engineer can own,
after all, that's what we are, RF engineers and oscilloscopes are cheap to
buy.

Thanks Bill,

Yes that is useful to know, I ordered mine on the 14th April.

As always Elecraft was quick, professional and friendly with their

Re: [Elecraft] Antistatic mat without electrical ground

2008-05-12 Thread Paul G4LNA

Just run a wire to a rod outside, it doesn't matter how long the wire is, as
you say it's not an RF ground. I wouldn't use the gas pipe for safety
reasons.

 Thanks.

[Elecraft] Power output measurement

2008-05-10 Thread Paul G4LNA

I've seen lots of posts regarding measuring output power. The technique I've
used for years is simple and effective, all it requires is an oscilloscope.
It doesn't have to be a top of the range high frequency instrument either,
provided the DC scale is reasonably accurate virtually any scope will do,
all that is required is to build a very simple diode probe and use a
calculator to work out what the power is across a 50 Ohm load.

Have a look at this site from Adam Farson, VA7OJ/AB4OJ, Fig 3 shows the
simple diode probe connected to a digital multimeter (DMM), in place of the
DMM use the scope.

http://www.ab4oj.com/pwrmeas.html

If you are measuring higher power levels use the 10:1 attenuator as in Fig
2.

Just speak into the mic and watch the peaks, it's far more accurate than any
meter can possibly be and far cheaper, there are plenty of surplus scopes
for sale.

Once you've used an oscilloscope you wonder how on earth you managed without
one ;-)

Re: [Elecraft] Measuring power output of an SSB transmitter

2008-04-28 Thread Paul G4LNA

I quite agree with you Brian, I didn't think there was any other way of
monitoring SSB reliably. I've always used a scope way back when I used to
build AM transmitters and I have one permanently connected so I can keep an
eye on what's going on, meters tell lies I find.

There is no substitute for an oscilloscope. There are precious few
meters that will read true peak power. Also, no meter is going to show
you peak compression or outright flat-topping (clipping) like a 'scope.

Someone mentioned that their power output went down when they turned
the compression down and would Elecraft make power output remain
constant as compression is reduced. Well, the power output (average)
is *SUPPOSED* to decrease when you reduce compression. When speech
compression is reduced, your peak-to-average power ratio increases.
The peaks remain just as high but the average power is considerably
less. This is another reason to want a 'scope to check your rig.

BTW, how many people have done a two-tone test or a double trapezoid
test for linearity? How many people even know what I am talking
 about? :-)

(My first HF transmitter was a Central Electronics Multi-Phase exciter
with a whopping 10W of output. When I got done making that work again
 you can bet I understood single-sideband. :-)

You will have to pay 17.5% VAT on the total price including shipping, it

When I received mine back in November the amount payable to UPS was the
vat plus an £11 handling fee, you would normally be asked to pay before
they will deliver. Smaller items tend to arrive by Parcel Force who
charge £13, not what you might call good value. The only viable shipping
option when I ordered mine was UPS, as the US Postal Service didn't have
 sufficient insurance cover.

One can listen with the above link on 40 and 80M. It is tunable and does
CW.SSB and I guess digital modes. Bandwidth is also adjustable.

No more depending upon some others subjective opinion of your keying and
 audio.

You will obviously have to listen on earphones if you're going use voice.

Re: [Elecraft] Splicing mic cables

2008-03-08 Thread G4LNA

Hi Jim,

The way I handle that wire is to strip it and fold it back on itself, then
bind it with thin wire taken from some flexible cable, then if necessary
lightly solder it, that always works for me.

Paul G4LNA.

Jim Wiley-2 wrote:

I have a question that perhaps someone on this list might have the
 answer to.

Does anyone know of good method for splicing tinsel-wire cables? I am
trying to repair a microphone extension cable that got ripped in two.

The cable in question is a 6-wire microphone cable, with conductors that
look to be about 24 to 26 gauge in size. The conductors consist of
copper foil wrapped around some sort of fabric core. Attempts at
stripping were dismal, using several different techniques. The cable
is normally terminated into a RJ type connector, that apparently uses ID
(insulation displacement) to connect to the wires. I am considering
something like Scotch UR type splices, but don't want to spend money on
a box without knowing if they will work or not.

A new cable is a possibility, but the existing one is built in to a
console, and several hours of work would be involved in removing and
 replacing the existing cable.

Soldering to individual conductors does not work. The resulting
connection is weak and very fragile.
