Re: [Elecraft] 4-pound Field Day, anyone?

I'm going minimal….4 pounds max of radio gear. This will allow me to put more emphasis on food, drink, and enjoying time with my son (now almost 9). If anyone else is up for FD4#, let me know. I'd like to compare notes on equipment, especially antennas, battery packs, and logging. 4 pounds (or so) is not an arbitrary number. This allows for: - a KX3 with internal ATU and attached paddle - mic and headphones - external Li battery, plus 8 internal AA batteries in the rig as a backup - two 50' (roughly) lengths of antenna wire, adapters, and a couple of 1-oz weights to get one wire into a tree - paper log and dupe sheets (maybe…more on this below) - soft carrying case for all of the above (in my case, a Think Tank Strobe Stuff bag) I still expect to be reasonably competitive in the 1B-battery category even with this lightweight station. I hope to operate on 80-6 meters in CW, SSB, and digital modes (RTTY using the CW paddle and the KX3's text decode function). There are two items I'm still working on: 1. External battery I need something that will fit into the bottom of the Strobe Stuff bag. It should supply at least 11 V, and I'd prefer 4 to 5 AH, though I could get by with 3 AH and switch to the internal AAs later if necessary. Has any consensus formed about specific Li battery packs in this class? Ideal max size would be 1x3x2.5 (HWD). 2. Logging I actually like paper logging in the field. It's kind of a Zen thing, checking dupe sheets manually (Griffin is old enough to help with this, too). But are there any good FD apps for the iPhone? I need the iPhone anyway so it doesn't count towards the station weight total. If there's an app that's easy to use for this, I'd love to try it. Heck, I'd even pay for it. I'm using 3.3K for mine, and it keys PTT just fine. RMS Express allows a transceiver choice of Elecraft Radios in the Radio Setup. I've got that choice selected, running in Digital mode (Digital USB). There are two serial ports shown, one for control and the other for PTT. I have two virtual ports (COM19, 20) running through LP Bridge, connected to COM3. COM20 is used to key the KX3, and COM19 is used to control the radio (frequency, mainly). A few asked why I wanted to switch so here's the simple answer. I operate SSB primarily in contests. In the CQWW SSB I found the 1.8k was a little too narrow when running stations at high rates (150/hr). In contests stations often call slightly off frequency (+/- 100 Hz) and I found myself needing to widen the passband to ~2.0k for best copy (which kicked in the stock 2.7k). In fact I never used the 1.8k much in the entire contest. When working stations on a single frequency (such as a DX pileup or a net) the 1.8k works fine when you have time to tune carefully. And yes I do know how to adjust HI CUT (and Fc) for best readability at narrow BWs. Hopefully the 2.1k will be a better solution for me in the ARRL SSB DX Contest in March. 73, Bill W4ZV __._,_.___ Reply to mailto:btipp...@alum.mit.edu?subject=Re%3A%20K3%20Trade%20my%201%2E8k%20for %20your%202%2E1k%20filter sender | Reply to mailto:elecraft...@yahoogroups.com?subject=Re%3A%20K3%20Trade%20my%201%2E8k %20for%20your%202%2E1k%20filter group | Reply http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Elecraft_K3/post;_ylc=X3oDMTJybmZoaDgxBF9TAzk 3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzIwMTQ5NDI4BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTA2MzEwOARtc2dJZAMxMzEzMwRzZWM DZnRyBHNsawNycGx5BHN0aW1lAzEzMjU5Mzc4NjI-?act=replymessageNum=13133 via web post | http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Elecraft_K3/post;_ylc=X3oDMTJmZDIyM2Z2BF9TAzk 3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzIwMTQ5NDI4BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTA2MzEwOARzZWMDZnRyBHNsawNudHB jBHN0aW1lAzEzMjU5Mzc4NjI- Start a New Topic Messages in this topic http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Elecraft_K3/message/13126;_ylc=X3oDMTM3b3IycG FtBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzIwMTQ5NDI4BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTA2MzEwOARtc2dJZAMxMz EzMwRzZWMDZnRyBHNsawN2dHBjBHN0aW1lAzEzMjU5Mzc4NjIEdHBjSWQDMTMxMjY- (2) Recent Activity: . http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Elecraft_K3/members;_ylc=X3oDMTJnM2xpcGFsBF9T Azk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzIwMTQ5NDI4BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTA2MzEwOARzZWMDdnRsBHNsawN2 bWJycwRzdGltZQMxMzI1OTM3ODYy?o=6 New Members 10 http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Elecraft_K3;_ylc=X3oDMTJmbjg1aDNtBF9TAzk3MzU5 NzE0BGdycElkAzIwMTQ5NDI4BGdycHNwSWQDMTcwNTA2MzEwOARzZWMDdnRsBHNsawN2Z2hwBHN0 aW1lAzEzMjU5Mzc4NjI- Visit Your Group MARKETPLACE Stay on top of your group activity without leaving the page you're on - Get the Yahoo! [Elecraft] kpa 100 problem
Hi folks I have a problem with the initial testing of the amp. The initial tune up gives me a hi cur then a 0.1- 1.0 and I cant control the watt reading. I tune C1 and did get a 1.0 but I don't get a 5.0w when commanded. I went on and the amp seems to be oscillating at abt 18 watts on the qrp pa and 170 on the kpa100. R6 has been adjusted for .5ma idle current. Any thoughts? George NE2I ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Another Battery Question
Hi So are you connecting the 14 volt supply to The power connector or connecting in some other way (direct to the battery) Is there an easy way to boost the voltage on any of the astron power supplies? I have several and can dedicate one to The k2 George Ne2i -Original Message- From: Charles Greene[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 7/16/05 8:25:35 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED][EMAIL PROTECTED], Elecraft Listelecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Another Battery Question Tom, If you can adjust your power supply to 14.0 volts, it should work a little better. I bought my K2 battery with the K2 in 1999 (S/N 462), and it still is as good as new. I also bought a Power Sonic 0.5 amp automatic charger, and it floats the battery all the time. It charges the battery at a constant current until 14.4 volts is reached, then maintains a constant voltage until the battery is charged as sensed by the current decreasing to a small value, then floats the battery at about 13.8 volts. My perception is that if the battery is not topped off at 14.4 volts it never is fully charged, but it may reach full charge if floated at 13.8 volts constantly. It just takes longer to reach full charge. 73, Chas, W1CG At 12:56 PM 7/15/2005, you wrote: Hi all, I have a basic K2 (s/n 1103) without the 100 amp. I also have the Elecraft internal battery (KBT2), which I use in the field. At home the K2 is connected to a 13 volt power supply which, of course, charges the battery while I'm operating. Unfortunately life will be getting in the way of operating over the next several months and I was wondering if I should be concerned about causing any permanent damage to the K2 battery while it is not getting charged. I'd appreciate any thoughts on this. I will be around and can turn on the PS to charge the battery from time to time (how long and how often?), necessary.
