[Elecraft] Serial to USB driver for Vista

2008-08-30 Thread George Marr

The Prolific web site asks the following for Vista users

NOTE: Prolific will not be providing Vista drivers for end-users. Please
contact the vendor of your cable for Vista driver availability and support.
Prolific recommends to purchase from following Cable Makers that provides
Vista driver and tech support:

(1) ATEN UC232A USB to Serial
(2) I-O Data USB to RS232C
(3) Belkin USB to Serial
(4) Elecom USB to RS232C

Which of these should I download
the disk gives no indication and I dumped the packaging
Which one did you supply

Re: [Elecraft] Alternatives to PowerPoles?

2008-04-12 Thread George Marr
Alan most Molex connectors are designed for price. They are ok for 15 to 25
in/and out connections. You need a mil spec connector to hack the job long
term. No connector lasts forever unless you never touch them. Let me put it
more accurately, if you pay less than ten bucks for the connector, plan on
replacing it in the long haul. Connectors and sockets are a large part of
the cost of any manufactured project

1) Anderson PowerPoles can be configured to be gendered, though the
"Ham Radio Standard" configuration did not choose to do this.

2) I have used the Molex since Heathkit days. Lots of them. They are
just plain unreliable in the longer term.

3) PowerPoles can easily be locked together when desired, but having
them pop apart easily is often preferred. It is up to the user this
way.

4) PowerPoles are not ideal, but they are the best thing going at this
time in the cost and performance category.

Show us better alternatives.. 12V 30A rated, low cost, low loss,
polarity protected, physically small, cable and chassis mount, readily
available, rated for lots of connect/disconnect cycles, easy to
install and plug/unplug.

[Elecraft] Crinp or Solder

2008-04-04 Thread George Marr
I worked for a Australian connector company in New Zealand as a Product Manager
I gave seminars to the utility companies (NZ Power Boards) on how to crimp.
The crimping process is not to get a tool and crimp the hell out of it.
If you over crimp in time as the cable expands and contracts with heat and cold
it will fracture.
If you compress the terminal with a low amount of pressure it will burn off in
time,
The proper tool with the correct die regardless of the wire size is critical
for
the quality control. Soldering is fine as long as you heat shrink the
connection to provide
strain relief. I always use a larger wire size than the current allows to make
sure that the wire
will not temperature flex with the load. This is why with jap cars you must run
more wire from the battery
if you add anything say a E2 or E3 mobile rig. The wire in the car is "Exactly"
the size for the current, add load and it will burn out.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Wait list

2008-01-18 Thread George Marr
When I moved from NYC to Auckland New Zealand in ' 76 I learned that things do
not go to plan
in ZL I quickly learned that nothing was the same as in the big apple. Then I
saw it almost in neon lights,
a ZL expression: "She'l be right mate" at this point I calmed down and realized
that 3000 mile from where this thing is being built it really does not matter.
In fact do not get fussed, there is nothing that you can do about it.

Being an east coast cynic, their cash flow might need help, so if they want to
bill me for the full amount now this is fine.
anything to help.
