[Elecraft] K3 MW DXing

After seeing the QST review, there's some curiosity among the IRCA group as
to how the K3 performs on the MW bands. Anyone tried dxing on MW?

Tony,
I have a CUP36 from the site you mentioned. I would not recommend the unit.
I bought one when I built my KX1 (#53) and it is a noise machine. I would
inquire first if it has been improved over the past few years. If it
hasn't, I'd leave it alone. The previously mentioned 3 amp unit from
RatShak is superior based on my experience.

Re: [Elecraft] building a K-2 compared to HW-9

2007-02-19 Thread Gil Stacy

Chris,
I have no experience with Heath Kits, but understand that they were an
important part of amateur radio and electronics history for the masses.
However, there is always one description of some of the Hkit projects,
perhaps an exaggeration , that has always stuck in my mind: Grief Kits.
g I have built a K2 and a KX1 and the worse thing about the kit
construction, to me, is finishing. When done, you want to keep building.
The service and back up support is unrivaled in the industry. Just this
weekend, Tom Rauch, W8JI, a well-known topband expert and ham electronics
guru, who I don't think is a K2 owner, commented on the Top Band reflector
about K2's. He marveled at the front end design in one post and the company
support in another. He had tested an earlier K2 on 160 meters and noticed
that the preamp did not increase sensitivity, but only gain, or something to
that effect. He sent one email to Elecraft and within days, the problem was
solved and a bulletin went out to all owners and all of the radios were
corrected. Tom said that would have never happened with other
manufacturers.

[Elecraft] Straight Key issues on K2

After turning on set, INFO 80 msg. appeared. Restart, msg. disappeared.
Series of restarts normal. If I had to guess, bad solder joint. Unlike

Re: Other questions was RE: [Elecraft] K2 Alignment and Test, Part III: High current

2005-12-27 Thread Gil Stacy

Kathy,

The K2 does not need the preamp on 40 meters.
Ron D'Eau Claire wrote ion the list in Nov of 2004 how to determine when
the preamp is used on the K2. I quote from his post:

The purpose of the preamp is to improve the noise figure on the
higher-frequency bands, not to make the receiver louder. It does that, of
course, but that's a secondary benefit. The issue is that the 'atmospheric'
or 'background' noise on the higher bands - usually above 15 MHz - can be so
low the internal noise in the K2 receiver could mask signals. The easiest
way to tell if that's true is to turn the preamp OFF, tune your K2 to an
empty frequency so all you hear is noise, set the IF filter for the
narrowest bandwidth you might use, and disconnect your antenna. If then
background noise level drops when you disconnect the antenna, you do *not*
need the preamp. The sensitivity of the K2 is entirely limited by the
background noise.

[Elecraft] Counterpoises for KAT100

2005-11-02 Thread Gil Stacy
I’d like to pigtail counterpoises for 10, 30, 80 and 160 meters for my
200+/- wire which is configured as an endfed inverted U up about 65-70’.
The horizontal run is about 90’; the down-turned end is about 50’ long, and
stops about 15’ from earth. The horizontal run is across a steel-shingled
roof with a ridgeline up about 26’ from earth. (If the 50' downturn is
counterproductive, I could eliminate it, but the antenna doubles on my dx
xtal radio set and seems to work better with this ant.)

For the ¼ wave counterpoises, I’d like to feed them to my KAT100 with a
single wire 6’ long. I would prefer to join the longer c.p.’s to this
single wire outside the window. Is this practical? I assume I would
subtract the 6’ from the calculated ¼ wavelength of each band and attach
wires of respective lengths to the 6’ wire. I’ll probably pigtail the 10
meter c.p. closer to the KAT100 inside the shack and keep it along the
floorboard.

C.P. height: Resources indicate a preferred height of 6-8’ above ground.
Is this a minimum or could I lay the 80 and 160 meter c.p.’s on top of my
roof? I will not be able to lay out the 160 meter c.p. in a straight line
in any event.

[Elecraft] KAT100 Power Calibration at R4-help!

2005-10-30 Thread Gil Stacy
No joy during power calibration. On my KAT100, I’ve completed the initial
tests involving the LED sequences, the Menu and Relay tests and all appears
fine. However, after completing the SWR Bridge Null Adjustment at 10mV and
then moving to the Power calibration of R4, at pin 5 of U5, with 20 watts
out of my K2/100, I only detect a range of mV (app. 100-20) on my DVM—no
where near target of 2.7 V. My set up is dummy load (15w) on RF In and coax
from K2 to ANT1 on KAT100 with the control cable (K2 and KAT100) and power
cable to the KAT100 removed. In accord with manual, before power was turned
off at K2 and KAT100, , K2/100 was set to CAL mode and Menu exited prior to
shutdown. The power level of the K2/100 is set at 20 watts. In “TUNE”, the
K2’s LCD registers HiCurr and then 9.9-1. With the K2/100 set at 20 watts,
at the KAT100’s Ant. 1 jack, I detect 20 mV and with an RF probe, 2.7 Vrms.
Solder joints look good and parts placement seems to be correct. All
diodes properly oriented. T1’s leads show correct placement with clean
solder on the wire above the board. With all power off, K17 shows 0 ohms
from pins 1-3 and 1-4. K2 in Tune mode at 20 watts on LCD was less than 30
seconds and the dummy load showed no signs of noticeable warming. Help with
troubleshooting would be appreciated.

Tnx es 73.

provided I experiment with the c.p. placement.

[Elecraft] Dual post bnc connector

2005-07-07 Thread Gil Stacy

My dual post bnc connector for my KX1 disappeared into the maw of my shack.
I'd like to order at least two more. Other than RS, Mouser, or OSE, any
suggestions?

Tnx.

Thanks for the responses. I re-checked Mouser and it was in stock today,
but not yesterday, and two are on the way.

Re: [Elecraft] BC-radio?

2005-05-10 Thread Gil Stacy

The DX-398 from RatShak has large following of fans with several mod pages
on the net. I use it frequently. While discontinued by RS, it is a
repackaged Sangean ATS-909. It's the size of a small, hardbound novel. It
has a wide range of shortwave, longwave and MW. It has digital tuning
something the GE SuperRadio lacks (at least the earlier models that I've
seen) There's a DX-398 for sale on ebay.

[Elecraft] Belize V31CA/NN4CW

2005-04-22 Thread Gil Stacy

Folks,

I'll be in Belize fishing April 23-30. I'll be around the qrp watering
holes on my KX1 probably 2300-0100 UTC after fishing. Fishing is the
priority. ;)

The lodge is located in the heart of permit country on Northeast Caye, which
is one of the islands in the Pelican Range, 18 miles Southeast of Dangriga,
Belize. I applied for the license by mail on March 17th and it arrived this
pm 14 hours before departure. Now that's timing.

[Elecraft] K2 Un-module for KDSP2

2005-01-16 Thread Gil Stacy

Has anyone designed and made an Un-module for the KDSP2 or KAF2? KE1L's
site does not list one.

http://w5big.home.comcast.net/K2_Un-modules.htm
I need to do some troubleshooting and want to avoid removing/replacing board
parts when I remove KDSP2 out of circuit. Tnx.

Re: [Elecraft] Ear-buds?

2004-09-16 Thread Gil Stacy
Don, I have both Sony earbuds and The Plug by Koss. The Sony’s may have
slightly higher mfg. reported sensitivity, but the The Plug has a sound
channel that goes deeper into the ear. The Plug has silicone buds that seal
out ambient noise. The Sony’s don’t seal.
There used to be a website that offered plug mods on The Plug, butmy link is
dead. Koss has improved the silicone plugs from earlier editions and each
set now comes with several different styles of plugs. I find myself using
the Koss more than the Sony. I have read that some ear shapes don’t easily
accommodate the silicone plugs, however.

RE: [Elecraft] fishing rod blanks

2004-08-24 Thread Gil Stacy

Take a look at the Moxon Antenna page for sources of cheap rods.
http://campus.murraystate.edu/org/msuarc/moxon/index.htm
While slightly more expensive, I bought a crappie (the fish, not the
adjective) pole from Cabelas for $10.00.

Sand spikes are easily made of PVC. Cut one end at 45 degrees. The other
end can be slightly flared by heating on a gas grill and forcing heated over
a wine bottle. A protruding stainless steel bolt placed at right angles to
the tube can be used as a foot rest to drive the spike in the ground.

RE: [Elecraft] CW ???

2004-06-26 Thread Gil Stacy

James,

I like Ray Goff's (G4FON) and Julian Moss's (G4ILO) programs. Rays is based
on the Koch method, but can be used in other ways; Julian's is a contest
trainer. Both are great programs and are free and are downloadable on the
net.
Unfortunately, the URL's I have are QSL.Net based and I can't get into them
now. Perhaps qsl is acting up again.
