Re: [Elecraft] Microphones for K2/3
I am pretty sure that there are a couple of very simple circuits in "W1FB's Design Notebook" that specifically use the "D104 -> modern_radio" as an example. Greg KI4MMM K2 #6100 On Sep 6, 2007, at 1:29 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: John, If your D104 is an older one with the high impedance crystal or ceramic element, yes it will not work so well (if at all). There was an article in QST about a year ago with a circuit design that had a very high impedance input and the low impedance output required by modern day radios, although a transformer with the right ratio should work too. Another alternative is to change the element in the D104. Heil offers a kit to do just that - check www.heilsound.com for info. My D104 with an HC5 element draws comments from time to time. 73, Don W3FPR John Huggins wrote: Thanks for the information all. So... [Elecraft] Elecraft GC Receiver by chance?
Just curious: with mentions of other upcoming Elecraft products (e.g., power amps) in previous posts, is there a chance that Elecraft might release a General Coverage receiver "kit" someday? I am wanting something comparable to the Palstar r30, Icom r-75, etc., but would much rather build an Elecraft version of such. [Elecraft] OT: Frequency probe
I've searched and Googled all over for this, but can find nothing. I have both a benchtop frequency counter (from a Hamfest w/ no probe), and the NorCal FCC-1, and I need a frequency probe for both of them. I have some RG-174 and BNC connectors. For the benchtop counter, I presume I connect the center conductor and shield to the BNC connector in the usual way. For the FCC-1, there are two holes on the board for the conductor and ground. Question is, what do I do on the other end? Do I need a capacitor like the K2's internal probe has? Do I need to ground the shield to the circuit under test (with a clip)? Is there more than one kind of probe depending on the type of measurement? One goal of mine is to use the FCC-1 with the AMQRP Tenna Dipper (which has one hole for frequency measurement). So, in addition to learning how to build a generic probe, I am also hoping to learn enough (from you all) to let me know whether I need to ground the shield to the Tenna Dipper, in addition to connecting the center conductor to that hole. [Elecraft] QRP SSB Calling Frequencies
In the back of K7SZ's "Low Power Communication" (ARRL publication) is a list of QRP calling frequencies. I am guessing that those for CW are well used, and standardized, but I am curious, as a No-Code General, whether the QRP SSB frequencies are used as often? I realize I am in a minority, but I am curious whether there are any other K2'ers calling/monitoring on these frequencies(?) e.g., 3.985, 7.285, 14.285, 18.130 That said, I am going to learn the code(!), because there is just too much neat stuff going on that I am missing out on. Re: [Elecraft] K2 microphone options
Just a quick followup in case it will be of use to somebody else some day. I went with the TenTec 701 for my K2 because it was a quick and easy option, and as Don said (thanks Don!), it "works well." Since finishing K2 #6100 last week, I have made several 5-10w SSB contacts from my QTH in North Georgia throughout the eastern US and Central America, and the reports are that my audio is great! A 17m QRP contact to Pennsylvania last night told me that "I was the smallest signal he had worked that day, but the best sounding one"!! Anyway, I am sure there are lots of great microphone options, but the affordable little 701 "works well." I got the 8-pin connector from my local RS store, and it was quite easy to wire the microphone and mic header. 73, Greg KI4MMM On May 2, 2007, at 9:39 AM, Don Wilhelm wrote: Greg, The K2 needs a high output microphone, and that usually means an electret type element. Most Icom mics (and Heil mics with the 'iC' suffix) are the high output electret type. If you choose one of these and wire your K2 configuration header for ICOM (with a 5.6k resistor between the AF pin and the 5 volt pin), you should be able to just plug it in. The other electret mic that I know works well are those from TenTec - the 701 is the hand mic. They come with a 4 pin mic connector that you must change to 8 pins, but you can wire the new mic plug for any mic configuration that you want - I suggest the Elecraft wiring - straight across (use computer jumpers) on the mic header. 73, Don W3FPR Greg Derda wrote: Hi all, I am in the process of building K2 #6100 and need to start thinking about a microphone. [Elecraft] XG1 freq. adjustment
I've just built an XG1, and it is not clear to me how to adjust the frequency using C6. According to the manual: "the frequency of the XG1 can set to exactly 7040.00 by adjusting C6 with an insulated tuning tool. Otherwise leave C6 set at its midpoint." With C6 centered, there is a definite tone at 7040.00, but the bandwidth of the tone is fairly wide, and it is higher pitched, and a good s-bar louder up around 7060.00. Should I trim C6 to bring what appears to be the loudest peak down to 7040 (this doesn't seem very precise)? Maybe I've goofed up and there shouldn't be any bandwidth to the tone (i.e., maybe is is supposed to be a precise tone)? Any suggestions on how to "calibrate" the XG1 would be greatly appreciated! [Elecraft] K2 #6100 is alive!
My XYL wasn't quite as excited about this as I had hoped, so I've got to tell someone ;-) I wired my TenTec 701, and the mic header, last night, and made my first contacts with K2 #6100. The first, from my QTH in North Georgia, was using 8w on 10m, to Pennsylvania - the band was up and down and we each exchanged only 5-3 reports. The second was much more exciting, and marks (to me) the point at which I consider the radio "complete." I used 8w to break into a small DX pileup on 20m, and Carlos (I can't think of his call), in Costa Rica, gave me a 5-7 report, and voluntarily added that I had "great audio"! My antenna was a 125' doublet at 50', fed with 600-ohm open feed and an MFJ-949E. Although I plan to add a KPA100 and KDSP2 next, I have decided that I don't need to be in a hurry. I am looking forward to learning what all I can do with this radio on low power, and the received signals are so strong that noise is not an issue at this time - What's amazing is that I find myself using the Attenuator regularly!! Re: [Elecraft] prebuilt KPA100 & KDSP2's
Not that I have received any negative comments, but I did want to clarify that my statement was a joke coming from someone who is overwhelmed with the joy (and labor of love) of the whole Elecraft experience at this time. We're all lucky to have XYL's who are supportive of our hobby interests, and of course the XYL would come before a K2! It's just a thought that comes to mind when trying to think of what else you might have that has the value of a K2. [Elecraft] prebuilt KPA100 & KDSP2's
Having just finished the build of K2 #6100 with a KSB2 (installed) and KNB2 (yet to install), I am looking at my next options. I plan to add a KPA100, KDSP2, and KAT100, and although I am enjoying the build process, another way to acquire these (at a potential savings) would be prebuilt. That said, I don't know whether it is in light of the K3 rage (i.e., selling off K2's to fund K3's), or whether this is normal turnover, but I am seeing these optional items come up for sale both here and on Ebay. Nevertheless, I don't know whether a used, prebuilt KPA100 or KDSP2 would be of use to me (as is), unless I had the modifications to my Control board, etc., and I don't see any upgrade kits/parts listed on the Elecraft site for this type of addition. I am guessing that it would be possible to get the needed parts from Elecraft (and elsewhere), but wanted to ask. What are the issues regarding the addition of such prebuilt options as the KPA100 and KDSP2? Thank you (for this and the great replies to a few of my earlier newbie questions!!), 73, Greg KI4MMM P.S. [Elecraft] K2/KPA100 vs. EC2/KPA100
Hi all, I just finished building K2 #6100, and will start my KSB2 tonight. I am a no-code General, and work primarily SSB QRO, although I look forward to QRP'ing with my K2. In most cases, for any portable work I might do, I will most likely carry at least two "enclosures": the K2 and some sort of antenna tuner. That said, two obvious configuration for my K2 are: 1. K2/100 with separate KAT/100 2. K2 with EC2/KPA100/KAT100 (and KIO2 in the K2) Question is: What are the obvious benefits or quirks between the above setups? Specifically, I am wondering if with the EC2 setup. 1. Whether the KPA100 behaves (i.e., "appears") the same to the K2 as if it were internal? 2. Is it a simple plug-n-play to either use or not use the EC2 setup? 3. For QPR ops with the EC2 setup, can you run just the KAT100 without having to power the KPA100? Any and all wisdom will be greatly appreciated! Thanks and 73, Greg KI4MMM ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 microphone options
Thanks to all for the replies to my K2 microphone question. I have a much better idea what my options are now. I am leaning toward a Heil iCM or Handi_Mic (electret), but considering the TenTec 701. I imagine that the new MH2 would be ideal, but I hope to finish my K2 by the end of May, and don't know if I could bear the wait (for its release). 73, Greg ki4mmm On May 2, 2007, at 8:43 PM, Bernie Gardner wrote: Greg, I bought a Handi_Mic for K2 5707 a few months ago. [Elecraft] K2 building plan
Hi all, this is my first post here, and although I see the concurrent "Looking at Elecraft Kits" message, I didn't want to step on that thread, because my question is a little different. I've gotten the K2 bug (real bad ;->) and plan to order one in the coming week. I have some kit building experience, and have a Hakko 936, magnifying lamp, etc., although I need to study the information on the Elecraft site about recommended solder. I want to build a K2 for use as a base station, and (as a No-Code General) plan to purchase/build in the following order: 1. K2 w/ KSB2, and include the Rework Eliminator "Option Ready" package. I'll worry about a mic when the time comes. 2. KPA100 (internal, not in an EC2 with the KAT100, etc.) 3. KAT100 4. KNB2, K160M, K60XV 5. KDSP2 Considering that (if I understand correctly) the Rework Eliminator package aids in progressive building, my question is: Does this seem like a feasible plan, or is there something (e.g., K60XV, for which I can't find a whole lot of info about) that would be better to build in initially?
