Re: [Elecraft] K4 Ethernet interface

The K4 is accessible through telnet on port 9200.

No security.

It is always a good idea to have security but I would prefer to have the
telnet without security and put the security in the network.

Make sure you have a good firewall between the internet and your radio

I understand that the real time streaming parts is not done yet, but
just being able to do the normal commands would be a step in the right

I do hope that there is fair security of SSH/TLS level, as we run this

a KPA500. The top shelf has two speakers and various junk that I gather.

I've found these racks so useful that I have 5 or 6 of them. I can hold QSL

undertand from earlier posts that there needs to be a minimum half inch
clearance on top of the KPA500 for the air intake grill. Has any FTer

 No.

You might get lucky with a complicated set-up; set Radio to
No Radio, use only one CAT port, set the K3 to 38,400 bps and
set the K3 Utility to keep speed at 38,400 bps. However, the

I keep a real serial port/cable handy for firmware updates and

I download the zip file from the Elecraft web site using the web browser
Firefox and save it in a beta folder. I have pretty much all the beta
firmware there in the original zip format.

Then I remove the 8 or so files from the zipped one with Winzip (I know
Windows will now extract those files but I have a paid for Winzip and it
works better) and extract the contents of the latest zip file to that
same folder. My K3 Utility points to that folder and sees the latest
 available firmware.

The process is relatively straightforward and means I have currently 50
versions of earlier firmware I can refer back to with out difficulty.
Yes, it's a bit computery but it works 100% for me with Windows XP Pro
and I checked with another K3 owner who has Vista and he says it works
fine on zipped betas for him too (although he also has Winzip). Not
having Winzip shouldn't be a problem...

Several propagation and logging progams.

Etc etc.

Hmmm, this sounds like a complete computer?

I think I keep it with my LP-PAN and spend the money on improvement of
my pc.

What you want depends on what you do and how you work. I do a lot of
contesting on HF and I am interested in weak signal reception on VHF and
higher.
For the contesting I need a complete integration with my logging progam,
point and click. For weak signal a display of the whole IF is nice, but
what I need is simultaneous detection of all the signals I see. And I
want this info in my software.
No external PAN adapter for me.

 Hi Ron,

I can't comment on whether this is normal or a problem, but I can
confirm that I see the same thing in AFSK-A mode, so it's not just
you :-) I believe it is ALC related.

Re: [Elecraft] CCFL and Ballast

2008-10-06 Thread Henk Remijn PA5KT
Interesting to see the calculations. I pay around € 0.22/kWh. Purchase
prices are about the same as in the USA.
Dont know what other prices are in EU, but for us it is more interesting
to not use the old light bulbs.

In some countries it is forbidden to sell the old light bulb.

[Elecraft] Re: High cost shipping on low cost articles

2008-09-13 Thread Henk Remijn PA5KT
As from Dec. 1st the allowed amount will be EURO 150 if you order
something outside the EU.
If you take it with you when entering the EU you can bring a total of
EURO 450 without paying custom duties or VAT.

Now it is EURO 22 and EURO 150.

If you have to pay VAT you pay it over the value of the goods + the
shipping costs. Plus add the handling by the customs agent. This is
usually between Euro 15 and 20.

And the effect of Ebay... But it is a real problem for us overseas
people.
Many firms will not ship abroad at all and others insist on using
expensive
couriers, even for items only costing a few $. My recent problem
trying to
get a 15-way cable for example. It would cost $10 for the cable and
$60 to

ship it, and that is before customs charges.

In that example, shipping in a jiffy bag would have avoided the
customs and customs clearance charges as well, as you are currently
allowed GBP 18 including shipping costs (I believe this is going up to
around GBP 100 at the end of the year).

Incidentally, for someone in the UK, I have found that Germany is a
good place to source accessories. UK vendors seem not to advertise
small accessories, or ones for older models. The German vendors don't
seem to fall into the everything gets courier prices trap. The one
downside is that some of them do not take plastic, but expect a Euros
bank transfer. That immediately adds GBP 15 to the cost. I did find
one that had the parts I wanted and did take plastic/Paypal. There
are no customs duties for imports, to the UK, from Germany. You do
have to pay VAT, but that is paid as part of the price to the vendor.

I believe Elecraft will ship small items by cheap methods, but it
would help if they actually provided details on the web site, even
though they may well not charge the international courier rates for
them. I'm reluctant to consider any of the small kits on add ons
because I don't know the shipping cost (I'm also waiting for the
customs exemption limits to rise).
