Re: [Elecraft] Of words and such

2019-04-26 Thread James Brassell
Andy,

Wayne was right, I meant that Eric had gone way beyond what was expected,
in a good way. My understanding of the phrase was it meant beyond bad
things and into the good. Sorry if you saw it otherwise. Guess I better
watch out for the wordsmiths.

[Elecraft] K-Line For Sale Rescinded

2019-04-25 Thread James Brassell
Problem with the P3 resolved with the help of Eric. When an owner of the
company calls to assist, that is beyond the pale. I don't recall anyone
ever having a corporate officer from Kenwood, Yaesu, or Icom call to assist
in a problem resolution. So, I am withdrawing my for sale offer for my
K-Line. This time I will remember to include my name and call sign.
Thanks for reading.

[Elecraft] P3 Ref Lvl Problems

2019-03-31 Thread James Brassell
When I set the noise level with Ref Lvl to the bottom of the spectrum
display, It will over time continue to move downward until the noise level
is off the spectrum display. If I cycle the P3, the noise level is well
above the bottom of the display and the waterfall shows the noise which
comes with Ref Lvl being set too high. Is this how the P3 works? I am
constantly having to adjust Ref Lvl. This is true for all bands.

Re: [Elecraft] I love toroids

2005-06-11 Thread JAMES BRASSELL
I, also, am very right handed. I wound the toroids without much thought
about the 'right way'. My K2 #4901 is running perfectly and checked out at
each alignment stage. Maybe I wound them 'correctly', but I don't really
think whether the lead comes over the top of the core or from under it makes
much difference. The difference would occur if you had more or less turns
going through the core. I've tried reading the inductance of a toroid with
a wire just sitting on top or under the core and as you may have guessed,
the inductance is lower than I can measure with a darn good DMM.

My 2 cents.

I disagree with the left hand right hand issue. I'm very right handed and
wound the toroids of my 1st K2 back words. However, when winding the set
for my current K2, I had to make a concise effort to wind them correctly
and it was awkward to do so.

BTW, I travel frequently for work so I brought all of the toroids and wire
on my recent trip. I sat at the desk in the hotel room and wound them all.
I did not strip and tin the leads... To much smoke. I was afraid of
setting off the smoke detectors.

Hey Elecraft! Why not put a separate section into the manual that
describes what core, what L or T number and the number of turns on each
core. That way, one can "pre-wind" all of the toroidal coils at the same
time and not have to stop and wind?

Just my 2cents worth.

PS my K2 is now operational as a receiver on 40 meters. Works great!

That's correct. There are no partial turns on a toroid.

As a leftie I had to overcome the same "sense" issue. Then came the T1!
One

toroid in the T1 has only three turns, close spaced, so they end up using
only a small part of the core. The turns occupy the area of the core
normally left open on a toroid. As a result, the "sense" of the winding
is

reversed! You have to wind that one "backwards" to make the leads lie up
with the pads on the board.

Oh, well, as Emerson wrote, "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of
little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.
With

consistency a great soul has simply nothing to do. He may as well concern
himself with his shadow on the wall." ... Or, I might add, concern
himself

with why the toroid leads don't match the holes in the PCB.

[Elecraft] Preamp, Attenuator on K2 #4901

2005-05-30 Thread JAMES BRASSELL
Hello, All.

I just finished K2 #4901 and it works great. The only thing I have a question
on is the preamp setting. When the annunciator is on over the preamp, it seems
as though background noise goes down and the signal strength is reduced. In
fact, there seems to be little difference between the preamp and att settings.
I've been through the schematic and carefully reviewed the parts installed for
the preamp and I can't see anything wrong. Has anyone experienced this
problem, if it is one?

73 and thanks.

[Elecraft] K2 CW Reception

2005-05-25 Thread JAMES BRASSELL
I am building K2 #4901 and have just completed Assembly Phase II. Everything
checked out fine. I put the K2 on an antenna and listened to some 40 meter CW.
I observed that when the frequency changed on stronger signals, the CW note
became chirpy, as if there were two signals. I set the tuning rate to 10 Hz
and as the frequency changes at that rate it is really noticeable. It sounds
much like my Orion when I have the tuning rate set to 100 Hz or higher. I have
not seen anything on the reflector that addresses this problem. Has anyone
else experienced this?
