Don... I removed the KAT3, cleaned the contacts as you suggested. Seems to
be working fine for now. Thanks for the tip.

Dave... I previously had problems with the front panel pins. They have
since been replaced with gold pins. Haven't had further issues.

Mike... thanks for your reply as well. Sounds like it may be a good idea to
check all the pins in the rig at some point.

[Elecraft] ERR AT3 on K3

2018-03-05 Thread Jed Petrovich
Hello all:

Over the weekend I was getting an ERR AT3 on my K3 when I first turn on the
radio. I did read in the manual about removing the KAT3, but decided just
to try setting the Config to "not inst" and the message no longer appears
during power up. The radio seems to work just fine without the tuner
"installed".

Is it likely the KAT3 is the problem or could it be something else? Also
wondering it is possible to have the KAT3 repaired.

Thanks,

[Elecraft] K3 - WinkeyUSB Keying Issue

2014-03-05 Thread Jed Petrovich
Hello all:

For the past several months, there are times when my Winkey won't key my
K3. At first, it was after I'd change from SSB to CW. The WK sidetone is
still audible, but the rig won't key. Lately, I've had it quit in the
middle of a QSO as I'm sending. This morning, it happened when I tried to
reply about midway through the QSO. It seems to be happening with more
frequency.

On Monday night, I did perform a reset/restore of the K3 configuration.

I've been able to get things going again by disconnecting the RCA end (K3
to WK cable) from the back of the WK and shorting out the tip/ground. I can
then plug it back into the WK and continue. Also, it happens even with only
5 watts output.

I realize this is a odd issue, but hope someone may have had a similar
experience or can offer some tips for diagnosing the problem.

[Elecraft] K3s at Field Day 2010

2010-06-28 Thread Jed Petrovich
Hello all:

We had a great time at Field Day this year. We planned on using four K3s for
our Class 4A operation. For the most part, everything went well.

We did have to use a backup rig for one of the stations. During setup, one
of the K3s gave an error at startup: ERR PL1

After a period of time, we turned the rig back on and the error message no
longer displayed. However, whenever we tried to connect the Prolific USB
cable to the rig, it would beep and would not communicate with the logging
software, N1MM.

Any ideas on what may be the problem?

Thanks,

The closest you're going to get to plug-'n'-play amplifier isolation is by
purchasing a commercial keying buffer, one for each amp and split the K3

device would go to its own amp. For three devices that's USD $90-$180
depending on the model + the cost of cables.

By contrast, three silicon diodes can be purchased with pocket change and
can be easily inserted into RCA plugs with just a bit of soldering
 necessary.

You may want to isolate all three key lines using one of the many keying
buffers available. At an absolute minimum, consider using three steering
diodes if only using a splitting RCA jumper cable from the K3 to the
 amps,
using one diode (e.g., 1N4007 or if necessary, a Schottky type) for each
  amp
key line from the K3 with all the cathodes combined together and pointing
back to the K3 amp key line.

The ne-plus-ultra solution for selecting one of three amps from one of
  three

MaxGain has a hexbeam kits available. There is a link at the top of their
main web page: http://www.mgs4u.com/index.html There are several options
available, including spreaders, element wire and UV rope. The sections are
cut specifically for the broadband version of the antenna. As such, they
can be shipped for standard UPS/FedEx Ground rates.

MG also has construction tips on their web site. Personally, I used the 3M
5200 Marine Fast Cure adhesive. I found a tube at my local Home Depot. The
adhesive takes 24 hours to cure. However, the adhesive was cured enough
after a few hours to allow me to start painting the spreaders. NOTE: I had
them laying on an extension ladder, covered with cardboard, so there wasn't
a lot of stress on the joints during the curing and painting process.

First of all, I would agree with the comments from the others who have
responded to this message. Specifically, daily practice, in short sessions,
is best.

I'm am a fairly new ham, having been licensed since 2005. Just as I was
starting to learn CW, I was directed to information on the Koch method and
comments by Dave Finley, N1IRZ: http://www.qsl.net/n1irz/finley.morse.html

At the time, there was still a 5 wpm code requirement for the General
license class. However, I knew I wanted to develop a skill and not just pass
an exam. So, I started practicing at a full 15 wpm. The Koch method focuses
on instant recognition. While it may not be the fastest method, I feel it
has worked well for me.

There are also several computer programs based on the Koch method. One is
from G4FON at www.g4fon.net.

Re: [Elecraft] Keyers

2009-04-20 Thread Jed Petrovich
Hello:

I'd also put my vote in for WinKeyUSB. I purchased it primarily for Field
Day and N1MM last year. It was supposed to be a backup, but we ended up
using it the entire time.

The kit was easy to put together and has worked very well for me for nearly
a year. The price is right and it interfaces easily with N1MM. All you need
to set is a couple of N1MM check boxes. Yes, there are more options, but we
didn't seem to need them.

Its computer interfacing is a big plus too.
On the other hand, the speed pot leaves me guessing as to what the actual
speed is, while the K3 keyer very conveniently displays the speed.
(When the Winkeyer speed is set from N1MM, the speed is clearly displayed
 on
 the computer.)
Finally, my Winkeyer came from a batch of 500 where the front panel
silkscreen was off, so that the SPEED label is partly hidden behind the
 speed knob.

My vote goes to the K1EL Winkeyer USB. Easy interfacing of computer and
paddles. Hitting the paddles during computer genrated keying will
immidiately stop the output and one can take over manually. Also has a
  speed
pot and 4 buttons on the box.

[Elecraft] Assembling a K3

2009-03-17 Thread Jed Petrovich
Hello all:

I'm new to the list and the world of Elecraft. Just picked up my K3 from UPS
yesterday. Last night, I managed to unpack the kit, sort the hardware and
inventory the other items. Looks like everything arrived. Assembly should
begin tonight.

I have read the tips in the assembly manual. So, I have the static mat and
wrist strap. But, I wondered if there would be a problem using magnetic
tools. Is this something that should be avoided?

Thanks much and 73,

Jed
