[Elecraft] FAQs - Iambic Paddles -- Show-n-Tell

2005-10-09 Thread Jeff Imel
As of this morning, I have received over 100 emails concerning the my iambic
paddles. Thank you for your kind comments and feedback.

There is no way I can respond to each individual email, so I consolidated
all of the questions and posted them here:

This has been a fun project.

[Elecraft] Iambic Paddles -- Show-n-Tell

2005-10-08 Thread Jeff Imel
I have wanted a set of magnetic paddles for about a year now to use with my
K1 and K2. I decided to try to make my own and after a few weeks of
designing, I just completed a set. I used rare earth magnets instead of
springs. It is constructed using stainless steel and aluminum. The top is
black anodized aluminum and I used gold contacts.

A picture of the paddles can be seen here:

http://tinyurl.com/cbwta

I really like the feel that I get with magnets instead of spings. Pretty
smooth.

Re: [Elecraft] Compromise/Limited Space/Make My Day Antenna Advice

2005-08-23 Thread Jeff Imel

Thom,

You could purchase a 20 to 30 foot fiberglass, telescoping fishing pole and
mount it on your second floor deck so that it slopes at a 45 degree angle or
so. You can run a wire up the pole to the tip and allow enough wire to hang
off of the tip so that it can not be touched by someone on the ground. You
can run a single counterpoise from your secod floor deck down to the ground.

I operate like this when on vacation at a beach house and at Field Day. I
duct tape a 2" ID x 2 foot long PVC pipe to the deck at 45 degrees and then
slide the pole into the PVC pipe. When I am done operating, I retract the
pole and reel in the line.

Let us know what you decide to do and how it turns out for you. Many of us
could benefit from hearing more about the antenna(s) you build and try.

I could use a suggestion or twoI live in a very congested areamy
house is 11 foot wide and 25 feet long...with a yard that is 10 feel
deepI have a

10 by 10 deck on the second floor.

I used to have an endfed wire that ran across the street to a phone
pole...but new houses cut that off.

There is a vent pipe on the back of the house that sticks up about 5 feet
above the roof.

So...I could try a loop on my roof(10 x 25 x 10 x 25), go over my
neighbor's roof(20 x 25 x 20 x 25) use the other neighbor's roof (30 x 25
x 30 x24), or

try to attach a light weight mast to the vent pole and go "up".

QRN is very bad here. Any and all hints would be appreciated.

Rig is the K2 with the autotuner.

Re: [Elecraft] Your favorite bands

2004-07-16 Thread Jeff Imel
Love 40 meters! Always open to somewhere from East Central Indiana. It's
fun to listen to 40 meters after local sundown and hear the states west of
the Mississippi start rolling in. After 0300 the entire western US is
reachable on a few watts.

I enjoy 20 meters because I never know where it will be open tocould be
EU, could be KS, could be anywhere. I hang out around the FISTS calling
freq of 14058 kHz. Always someone there to QSO with.

I visited Trev's (K6ESE) website and looked at some of the items he
purchased from "The Radio Room." Gosh, I hope that one day 40 years from
now I will be such a QRP legend that they manufacture coffee mugs, lunch
boxes and t-shirts with my picture on them (ASHTABULA BILL).

RE: [Elecraft] QSK Thump on KX-1

2004-06-14 Thread Jeff Imel

Update

I operated late last evening and the QSK thump stayed consistant all evening
long. This morning, I turned the rig on and over a two hour period and two
QSO's I did not experience any thump at all. I was using the same antenna
as last evening and same external battery pack with a voltage of 10 volts.

Maybe it healed itself! :)

My KX-1 is serial number 32. It was built this week and it is a lovely
rig. I do have a problem with QSK thump. I am wondering if any of you
have experienced this and I am interested in learning what you did to
correct it.

It thumps when it goes from transmit to receive and the receive audio
slowly comes back up to normal after about a half of second. It does not
do it all the time, only after I have been sending for about a minute.
Once it starts thumping, it will continue to thump until I cycle power.
Sometimes that removes the thump, sometimes it doesn't. I have tried using
three different antennas with and without an external tuner and nothing
removes the QSK thump. I experience QSK thump on all bands.

Any ideas?

Thanks and 73
