Don (and all) -

Thanks for the info. I had totally forgotten about using that center screw
terminal on the grounded outlets. D'hhh! Homer Simpson mode after too
many Memorial Day cold Heinekens!

[Elecraft] K3 S/N 4359 - It's Alive! (And Thanks)

2010-06-04 Thread Jim / W6JHB

Finished assembly of my K3/100 serial number 4359 this afternoon. What an
easy, trouble-free build. Everything checks out, the 100W PA works fine, and
I'm looking forward to getting some sort of antenna up in the air to make
some QSOs. Only had two minor issues during the assembly. First, I
accidentally dumped my 32-bin plastic parts tray over, with most of the K3
nuts, washers, etc. falling into the chassis / RF board - arrrgh! Then,
when I was almost finished, I heard something rattling in the front panel
unit. Thinking it was from the dumped parts bin, I ripped the K3 apart,
including the front panel. Only to find out that the rattle was caused by my
not having tightened down the knurled ring on the phones jack on the
front!!!

Anyway, I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Wayne and Eric for
designing such a great rig. Assembly couldn't have been easier - the manual
was exceptional!

And lastly - a BIG attaboy for Susan and Ryan at Elecraft - they had their
names in the packing slips on all the parts bags and not one item was
missing - thanks folks!!!

2010-06-06 Thread Jim / W6JHB

Roughly about 10 hours, and I really took my time. Did it over about 2-1/2
days. That includes ALL parts inventory and the clean-up from dumping the
parts bin into the unit halfway through! It truly was a piece of cake.

Hi Alan - thanks! It was fun to build (although I do miss the smell of that
rosin core solder) - gotta get a KX1 for Christmas!

>From what I've seen, it is a snap to add modules. In fact, the XYL pinched
my pocketbook when I was getting ready to order and I had to cut the KBPF3
(General Coverage band pass filter module) and the associated 6KHz crystal
filter from my list. As I built the rig, I saw how easy it'll be to add
those two items when dollars are a tad more available. In the case of these
two items, it simply requires taking out a few small screws holding the top
cover in place, plugging in the KBPF3, removing the front half of the bottom
cover and inserting the new crystal filter & retaining screw. Bolt the
covers back on, run the K3 Utility software and let the K3 know about the
new stuff just installed.

My build of the K3 included the KAT3 internal antenna tuner, the 100-watt
amp, and two additional crystal filters. Those were the the only options I
went for on this go-round.

I sold off a K2 and an Icom 756 Pro III to get this rig, and so far I'm
quite impressed. Now, if the sun would cooperate and get spotty, I'd really
be happy. Today's conditions on 20 meters in north central California are
pathetic - almost ZERO signals heard. Last night I was running only 30w into
a crummy Buddistick and I worked KH6AT over in Hilo, HI on 40 CW - my first
K3 QSO. (And Bryce was also running a K3)

[Elecraft] K3 Low Pass Question

2010-06-16 Thread Jim / W6JHB

Just wondering if many K3 owners have a low pass filter in their coax line?
I'm starting to assemble my station in a rental apartment and have a couple
commercial low pass units lying in the parts box. Worth the extra (small)
effort to put one in the transmission line? In my case, no additional $$
cost, but it would add another pair of PL259's and a short length of cable
to the configuration.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Low Pass Question

Well, after getting a handful of replies, I'm opting to NOT put the low pass
filter in the line. Had totally forgotten about most of 'em having a cutoff
at 30 MHz, and sooner or later I'm gonna give six meters a try. Thanks for
the replies folks!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Plasma TV QRM

2010-06-23 Thread Jim / W6JHB

Delwyn,

We have a fairly old Sony 42" plasma TV and my brand-new K3 is sitting on a
folding card table, no more than two feet from that TV. I have an outdoor,
semi-inverted Vee antenna with it's apex at about 25 feet, located less than
75 feet from the rig. I have absolutely zero QRN from that plasma TV. And,
if there are other plasma sets in the neighborhood, they apparently are not
causing QRN for me. Now, if you are really talking about "QRM", yes - I have
to tell the XYL to turn down the volume on her programs when I'm trying to
use the radio!!! :-)

[Elecraft] K3 SSB & Data - No Output, Need suggestions

2010-07-10 Thread Jim / W6JHB

Been using my K3 number 4359 on CW for almost a month - very happy. Last
night I hooked up my SignaLink USB and tried PSK31. Got a waterfall display,
signals present and being decoded, but NO output when CocoaModem set to
transmit. Figured I had something hosed in the SL jumpers - checked three
times, they are OK. So, hooked up my Elecraft MH2 Mic and thought I'd give
SSB a try this afternoon. NO OUTPUT!

I have the K3 set on 14.200 (dummy load), RF power at 40w, Mic Sel = FP.L,
Mic + Lin = OFF. I press the PTT button on the mic, I get the red TX light
on the K3, the radio appears to go into transmit mode, but no inkling of RF
when I speak into the mic. I have the Mic control at 23, CMP = 0, Mon = 53.

So, what have I forgotten to set? I'm betting that whatever is hosed with
the SSB setting may fix my PSK31 problem, too. Anyone have any suggestions?

Tnx, Jim / W6JHB

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB & Data - No Output, Need suggestions

2010-07-10 Thread Jim / W6JHB

Got the SSB problem fixed - as suspected, it was my fault - I had mis-read
the manual regarding the bias setting for the MH2 Mic. Ooops!

But, it did NOT resolve the PSK31 issue. I finally got CocoaModem to trip
the PTT on the K3, but still no RF flowing. I'd appreciate hearing from
anyone using CocoaModem and the K3 to do PSK31. Maybe we can go over
settings to see what I've messed up...

Tnx & 73, Jim / W6JHB

Re: [Elecraft] K3 SSB & Data - No Output, Need suggestions

2010-07-11 Thread Jim / W6JHB

Folk: my SSB -and- data problems have been corrected. The problem was, as
expected, at the user end of the chain! The SSB problem turned out to be the
Mic bias not being set properly: operator mis-read the manual!

The PSK31 / data problem ended up being not enough Mic drive. Tried it with
the SignaLink's output going to the rear Mic connector (per Don, W3FPR) and
it worked fine. Chen (W7AY) reminded me that the K3's LineIn drive level is
adjusted by the front panel "Mic" control. I had set that to full
counterclockwise at the start, per the S/L documentation and never had
advanced it past zero. Turning it up around 20 gave me plenty of RF output.
Haven't made a QSO with it yet on PSK31, but I know there is now RF going
down the coax!!!

Thanks for the helpful replies everyone - much appreciated.

[Elecraft] P3 Utility Abends on Mac OS X

2010-12-24 Thread Jim / W6JHB

I just completed the assembly of my P3 serial number 878 (went together very
smoothly!). Connected it to my K3 and powered them on - no problems, nice
sharp display on the P3.

Prior to doing this, I had gone to the Elecraft web site and downloaded the
current Mac OS X version of the P3 Utility, version 1.3.8.25. When I try to
run the P3 Utility, I immediately get the following error:

"An exception of class NilObjectException was not handled. This application
must shut down."

I am running this on a MacBook Air laptop, with OS X 10.6.5

I've re-booted the computer and still get the error.

Elecraft support is deservedly taking a holiday break, so I thought I'd see
if anyone on the reflector may have come across the error. Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Utility Abends on Mac OS X

2010-12-24 Thread Jim / W6JHB

Problem fixed. The first time I ran the install, I dragged the app onto the
Dock and tried running it from there. I subsequently re-ran the .zip file
and did a copy/paste onto the dock, and it works fine. Once again, user
error! Darn users!!! :-)

Thanks for you help, folks - appreciated.
