[Elecraft] Subject: Re: P3 SVGA Question

2019-10-20 Thread Jim Shepherd
Yes it is possible to have multiple 'windows' open on a large monitor. You
will need a svga to hdmi converter to take the signal from the P3 to a
video multiplexer box which uses multiple hdmi inputs. You can set it for
various configurations of the display screen depending upon the video box.
Currently the svgs/hdmi adapters need 5 Vdc from a usb port, and the one on
the P3 does not supply that voltage.. The video boxes usually have a wall
wart. Your monitor needs to have a hdmi input. These are the items that I
use, there may be better ones out there as I set this up a year and a half
ago...

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Urban stealth HF: Inside-the-backpack loop antenna?

Cut a large double sided piece of double sided circuit board to fit the
backpack.
Etch the back side with a symmetric Hilbert curve split into 2 columns fed
at the bottom center and the two columns attached at the top. Leave the
other side as a solid ground plane... It will take some work to make a
matching network, but the length of the 'curve' can easily be a half wave
on 20 meters. It will be directional to your rear as you walk along.

Re: [Elecraft] SVGA for P3 - only looking for ten (10) replies (is that possible?)

2018-07-23 Thread Jim Shepherd
This weekend I had my large monitor hooked to my SVGA output on the P3 for
the Special Event Station at NVCON. The ability to show off more features
of the use of a panadapter to all of the folks who stopped by really
helped. I could see a better color spectrum on the FT8 signals and the RTTY
signals. I had a number of Elecraft users who had P3 without SVGA monitors
comment that it would be the next upgrade that they would be making to
their stations after seeing it live! The longer time shown on the waterfall
is a big help during contests.

Re: [Elecraft] Field Day rig experience

2018-06-09 Thread Jim Shepherd
Last year I was running my K3s digital, and I could see the CW operators
and the voice operators on the P3, but never heard them. At one point one
of the CW ops was only 10 KHz away and not interfering with PSK31.

Will be repeating the operation this year, with a 7A station, there will be
lots of other signals from the other radios that are a mix of Y-I-K... I'm
bringing some external bandpass filters for those other stations to use to
protect them from each other.

Look for W7TA at Washoe Lake State Park between Reno and Carson City!

Re: [Elecraft] How to use LCD TV for P3 monitor?

2018-05-27 Thread Jim Shepherd
The eSynic VC043 (available from Amazon for $12.95) works well with the P3
and a HDMI monitor. The one thing you will need to do is supply 5 Vdc to
the USB plug on this unit. The USB on the back of the P3 does not work to
provide power to this unit so you will need another source like your
computer.

I brought this issue with the lack of power with the USB on the P3 up in
another thread a few days ago and have not received any response.

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA schematics and usb port

2018-05-23 Thread Jim Shepherd
Hi,
The SVGA schematics were missing at
http://www.elecraft.com/manual/P3_svga_D_sch.pdf...
I was trying to see if the 5 Vdc was available at the keyboard port to
drive a SVGA to HDMI converter or if it needed to be turned on in software.
I could not find this information in the manual.

Other than not having power, plugging the video adapter in did not seem to
affect the operation of the P3, and when I plugged the adapter into a USB
power adapter, I got the full display on the monitor. I'm looking at using
a split screen at an upcoming special event...

[Elecraft] Subject: Re: K4

2018-05-19 Thread Jim Shepherd
I definitely would like to see mouse control for the P3... The current
buttons and especially the rotary encoder are stiff enough so that the unit
moves when they are pushed. With a mouse controlling these features the
unit is not touched. A USB port to allow the use of a wired mouse or a
dongle with a wireless mouse would be ideal.

Also, the addition of a HDMI port in addition to the SVGA. More of the
larger monitors are coming without SVGA inputs. It would also be a way to
send l audio to speakers in the monitor. HDMI can be used for split
screen video (PIP) allowing several windows with different displays to be
shown on a single large monitor.

An additional rotary encoder on the front panel of the K4 to allow for
1-5-10-20-50 KHz tuning steps across the band. Currently, the RIT/XIT knob
can be reconfigured for that function.

A small slot on the back of the radio to accept a computer cable lock for
use when the radio will be used at public events like Field Day, etc. This
should be added to the whole line. It will not stop a determined thief,
but it will deter some.

A couple of more antenna ports on the back to allow several different
antennas with memories for the tuner settings for each.

More programmable memory buttons so that voice recorder is not using the
same ones as CW or Digital.

Backlighting on all the buttons and controls..

50 Amp power pole connecter for incoming power, keyed so that the KPA1500
power cable will not connect. 2 standard size power plugs for aux power out
to P3, etc. Main power cable upgraded to #6 wire.

Re: [Elecraft] KIO3B Digital I/O assembly

2018-03-16 Thread Jim Shepherd
Having also hit the wrong hole while attaching cables from in front of the
radio, unless you have totally messed up the contacts, they can be teased
back into position with the careful use of a dental pick. BE SURE to
disconnect the power cable before attempting this repair...no telling what
damage could be caused by shorting a couple of the contacts together while
doing this repair... YMMV.

Subject: [Elecraft] KIO3B Digital I/O assembly
I am not sure how many of you have noticed the warnings in the K3s and P3
manual to NOT plug a USB B connector into the 8P8C modular jack lableled
“RS232/P3” on the rear of the K3s. This is a VERY important warning but
only if you read it prior to inserting the USB cable (twice) into the
RS232/P3 jack on the KIO3B.

It was the very first plug I inserted after completing my kit while looking
over the radio from the front. I did it twice because it did not seem to
fit correctly:). I did not realize that I had “squished” it for a couple of
weeks as I had not tried to use the jack.

Since this little bugger (KIO3B Digital I/O Assy E850646) costs $98,
believe it or not, I want to repair my existing board after the replacement
arrives tomorrow. If I did it once I will probably do it again.

My problem is that there are dozens of similar jacks and I need to find the
correct manufacturer, part number and source for this particular 8P8C
circuit board mounted modular jack. I have the tools and the skills but I
lack the correct part.

If anyone from Elecraft could provide me with the proper replacement jack
information I would be very grateful.

Google "streaming svga output over ip" There is a lot of equipment out

Re: [Elecraft] Screen Magnifier for P3...user with poor eyesight

2017-10-13 Thread Jim Shepherd
The SVGA card for the P3 is excellent, not only can you put the display up
on the 'big screen', but the screen colors on it are much better than on
the little screen and you can make almost all of the screen into a
waterfall. I'm using a 24" monitor and about the only time I look at the P3
is when I am setting the ;Rev Lvl'.

On Elecraft's next improvement to the P3, a HDMI port would be nice...

[Elecraft] Data mode shows 600hz BW on P3

2017-10-06 Thread Jim Shepherd
When I switch to DATA mode, the receive bandwidth is only about 600 Hz even
though when I check with Data MD it shows the USB mode. I have the 2.8
filter selected and it shows on the display and using the K3 Utility
program. The audio also shows that there is only 600 Hz bandwidth. When I
switch back to USB mode, everything is working at 2.8 kHz. The highlighted
segment on the P3 showing bandwidth also confirms the two different
bandwidths, and WSJT-X also shows the decreased bandwidth in the DATA mode
and does not decode signals outside of that BW even if they are huge on the
fo P3. I can't find anything about changing the RX bandwidth in DATA mode
in the manual...
