[Elecraft] Transporting Lithium Batteries
It is worth noting DOT regulations for transporting lithium ion batteries by air: http://safetravel.dot.gov/whats_new_batteries.html Basically Lithium Ion batteries not installed in equipment may not be carried in checked luggage. There are some limits on what and how many may be carried in carry on luggage, but those limits should not affect the batteries one would normally use with a KX3. 73 - Jim K8MR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 doesn't like sand
This is why when I operated from the beach in Punta Cana as HI/K8MR in the 2014 ARRL and CQ CW DX contests, I took care to tape over all unused connectors, the seam where the two halves hinge together, and the speaker (I was using ear buds). While I did not do so, it might also be good to put some clear tape over the LEDs that stick through the front panel. I then placed the radio inside a large ZipLock bag, open only enough to let the cables pass through. I used the dial lock when possible, and either tuned through the bag, or cheated a bit and opened the bag to get at the controls. I imagine salt would be even more destructive than sand. 73, Jim?? [Elecraft] KX3 - VOX Delay with CW in SSB mode
With the ARRL VHF contest coming up, I'm still waiting to hear if there has been any progress in getting a delay in the PTT output, vs. full breakin only, when using CW in SSB? When driving a (non-Elecraft) transverter, one needs some delay in the circuit that keys the transverter. The delay time used in straight CW would be fine. 73 - JimK8MR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] [KX3] VOX Delay with CW in SSB
I posted a query a few weeks back but neglected to say for which radio. The KX3, FW 1.61, with CW in SSB seems to allow only full break-in operation. This is a problem when using a transverter or amplifier not designed for break in. Am I missing something, or is this in need of an FW revision? I would think using the CW delay times when transmitting CW in SSB would make the most sense. (If CW was set for zero delay, full break-in would still be available). 73 - Jim K8MR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Looking over the KXPA100 order information, I wonder, what is controlled via the RS232 jack (with the KXUSB cable), and what is controlled via the Ethernet jack/cable? Re: [Elecraft] KX3 CW Key Options
There are many very functional radios out there that use a mono key jack. In my case, the IC-746. Most keyers have their output as a mono RCA jack. The K1EL USB WinKey and the W9XT Unified Microsystems XT-4 are two such examples. A readily available mono RCA to 1/8" cable is exactly what is needed for such, with no extra unused dangling ends of a stereo cable. And a mono plug is easier to wire up - more room without the second circuit to deal with. The suggested firmware change would be pretty simple to implement. We aren't talking a major DSP redo. I suspect many other firmware changes have been made to satisfy even fewer people. 73 - Jim K8MR In a message dated 9/13/2013 12:54:02 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, kengk...@gmail.com writes: Hi Jim ! Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: KX3 Relay Control For Desktop Amplifiers
In my case the FET failed somewhat gradually. I made several QSOs by momentarily turning off the transverter power. When I turned it back on, it came up in receive mode. Then I'd transmit, power cycle the transverter to return to receive, and repeat. After several such QSOs power cycling would not get the relay to drop out. 73 - Jim K8MR In a message dated 3/12/2013 8:53:12 P.M. What you really want for this situation where the relay is presumably inaccessible and hence cannot be fitted with a clamping diode or RC snubber is an avalanche rated FET, and the 2N7002 is not avalanche rated. It may well be that the 2N7002 will handle some number of breakdown events but the breakdowns degrade the device and will cause failure sooner or later. Unless a particular device is explicitly rated for avalanche operation, it must be assumed it is not to be used in breakdown mode. I like the Vishay/Siliconix SI2328DS-T1-E3 for FET switching of relays where you cannot be assured access to the relay coil. It's rated at 100V, 1.5A and is avalanche capable to 6A. It's an SOT-23 surface mount package. Or, if an avalanche rated device is not to be used, a zener with a breakdown voltage less than the maximum rated drain voltage of the FET can be used from the drain to ground. It also has the advantage of being more easily replaced in the future as bog standard parts are involved. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 in the ARRL International DX contest
Add me to the list of KX3 ops in the ARRL CW DX Contest. I spent about 11 hours as HI/K8MR, operating with very simple wires from the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino resort in Punta Cana. Totaled 615 QSOs with 172 Multipliers. There were some very slow times for us, especially on the low bands, when European signals were booming in, much louder than stateside. But we couldn't work them in this contest :-( Best rate was an hour+ of 140/hr on 15 (and some 10) operating under a beach hut with a 10 foot piece of wire strung around the underside of the hut's framework. Precautions were used to protect the radio: I taped over all unused connecters and screw holes, and kept the radio in a ZipLoc bag, open only enough to get out the coax and keyer and headphone lines. Sent by hand and logged on paper from the beach! Night time operation (and late afternoon after the internal batteries ran out) was from the room with wires run from our fourth floor balcony. Jim, W8WTS, was also with me and shared time at the radio, using HI/W8WTS. I don't have his final results but I believe they were similar to mine. I was able to pack all the radio stuff in the equivalent space of slightly less than a carry on suitcase. (A few tools did have to go in checked luggage). Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Transverter Band TX output
More info: I have the ATU installed in the KX3. Even with the KX3 directly connected to a good 50 ohm load, running an autotune on the XV bands (28 MHz) causes lots of relay chatter in the radio, and a displayed SWR of 25.4 that does not change. On the other bands (including 28 MHz) it immediately goes to 1.0. Setting the ATU to bypass still does not get RF output on the XV bands. The current draw key down at 0.1 watt is about 0.43 A on the XV bands, and about .55 on the HF bands where there is output. Has the KX3 firmware caught up with the XV bands? I'm working at getting my DEM transverters interfaced to the KX3. I've set up the first three XVTR bands, configured for 28 MHz IF. With the KX3 max power set at 0.1W on the transverter bands, I'm only getting about 20 mW of 28 MHz RF output (1V RMS measured on the scope). When I use 28 MHz with the power set at 0.1W I'm showing about 350 mW (4V RMS). I can increase the RF power by increasing the KX3 max power setting, but still it is much lower on the XV bands than on 28 MHz. The absolute numbers may not be very accurate, but why the big difference? 73 - Jim K8MR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [KX3] Transverter Band Selection
I'm starting the project of getting my KX3 interfaced to my three DEM transverters (222-432-1296, all 28 MHz IFs). If the XVn firmware working yet? The only search results I find from the archives gives a September 2012 message that the firmware was still being worked on. In particular, what sort of output does/will select the band? Is it serial data, a DC level, or what? Is/will that be on the tip of the ACC2 plug? I can still get things working by the January contest by just using the 28 MHz frequency readout and my current transverter switch box, but having the switching done at the radio with in band frequency readout would be cool. [Elecraft] KXBC Clock
Today at the end of the ARRL 10 meter contest, the real time clock in the KX3 rolled over from 23:59:59 to 24:00:00 and kept going. I turned off the radio and it came back up at 00:02:xx ??? 73 - Jim K8MR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 battery charge level
Might it be possible to see the maH drawn since the end of the last charge? Is seems that such info could be a useful gauge of how much battery juice is remaining. (If the answer is no, add this idea to the suggestion box.) 73 - Jim K8MR In a message dated 12/6/2012 11:46:49 P.M. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Filter Blow-By
I did some more careful checking this morning, transmitting a few watts on the FT-1000MP and using a couple of inches of wire as an antenna on the KX3, on a quiet 10 meter band. The S-meter on the KX3 was 9+ There is noticeable opposite (lower frequency) side suppression issues, but this cuts off at about 900 Hz On the higher side, I can hear signal to as far as my hearing and/or the audio chain permit. The most interesting note was that the undesired signal (high side only) takes a sharp dip or disappears every 50Hz, at .00 or .05 on the frequency readout. I'm not sure what to make of all this, but FWIW . . . 73 - Jim K8MR In a message dated 10/8/2012 3:29:37 P.M. Eastern Daylight Time, dro...@necg.de writes: Hi Jim, did you have VFO NR enabled by chance? I suppose yes, as the KX3 is quite unusable on the high bands without. :-( There is a known issue = bad effect of the DSP leading to "artifacts", i.e. hearing signals +/- 5-6 kHz again from strong stations. If you turn off VFO NR it goes away, but then the VFO noise is much too strong. :-( Another bad effect is even with VFO NR enabled if you tune "over" strong stations you suddenly have strong VFO noise until you stop turning the wheel. Afterwards it's gone again. And if you turn the VFO fast enough you will not even recognize even 59+ signals. :-( All problems from the VFO NR DSP implementation as confirmed by Elecraft. And no matter if with or without roofing filter and with/without 8 kHz shift enabled. Still wonder why nobody else is complaining about those effects? Cannot be that everybody has an s4 noise level on 12, 10 & 6 m that would mask the VFO noise and thus no need to enable VFO NR. I documented all those effects on video and sent it over to Wayne. He said he and Lyle are working on it, hopefully with some results soon, otherwise the KX3 is of no use for a high band op like me. :-( Never seen such problems with *any* other rig owned so far ... 73, Olli - DH8BQA - Original Message - From: To: Sent: Monday, October 08, 2012 7:46 PM Subject: [Elecraft] KX3 Filter Blow-By >A recent KX3 owner (# 1677), I've noticed hearing out of passband signals > from loud CW stations. [Elecraft] KX3 Filter Blow-By
A recent KX3 owner (# 1677), I've noticed hearing out of passband signals from loud CW stations. I can hear such stations up to several KHz away. I suspect the range is limited by the audio response of the system, including my ears. Both sides of zero beat, though less so on the opposite side of the zero beat. In the CA QSO Party this weekend, maybe the loudest 10% of the stations on 10 CW Saturday afternoon were leaking through. (I've heard the leakage on other bands as well.) I don't have any roofing filters. (I figured any stations weak enough for me to need the filter to hear, would never be able to hear me anyway). Is this normal, or is there some shielding or other issue affecting my unit? (It is a kit version). 73 - Jim K8MR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
