Re: [Elecraft] Hallicrafters HA-1
I also copied the Hallicrafters HA-1 schematic when I was 15. I loved the glow of those voltage regulator tubes and the neon bulb on the front panel. And that mercury-wetted relay was beautiful. But - it didn't have auto character spacing which came out with the WB4VVF Accu-Keyer (hint-hint - so it's not OT after all). 73, John W2XS (K3, K2, K1, KX2, and had 2 KX1s). -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Hallicrafters-HA-1-tp7630652p7630657.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3s Hearing low level rear speaker audio with SPKR+PH no and low AF set
Maybe it's an impedance issue. Regular speakers are "low" impedance (8-ish ohms) and the input impedance of powered speakers might be much, much higher. Re: [Elecraft] K3 for SWL?
I just completed a 2 year low-key effort to log an AM BCB station (or stations - day and night) on every frequency from 530 kHz to 1710 kHz. I mostly used a Hallicrafters SX-100 and a Hammarlund HQ-145A, both highly-sensitive and well-calibrated vintage receivers. To get the hardest ones, though, the K3 with its synchronous detection was invaluable. For example, WCBS radio is a powerful clear-channel station on 880 kHz located here in NYC. Using the K3 and USB, I could copy WLS in Chicago on 890 kHz. Trying to listen on LSB resulted in a lot of QRM. I feed my antenna into the "RX-in" jack which bypasses the input filters. I sure wish the KX2 had this feature. I use a Bose Soundlink speaker system plugged into the rear headphone jack. A local oldies station sounds very nice (although a bit restricted in the treble due to the DSP bandwidth). I used headphones for the hardest stations. 1620 was the last entry in my log. Usually, I heard several weak stations at the same time. Finally, one night, QSB was in my favor and I heard one of the stations sign their call letters. Sometimes it took a long time to identify the stations. I heard stations up and down the east coast and Canada. I clearly heard KCJJ in Iowa on 1630 early one evening. This was actually a lot of fun, especially when the ham bands were closed down. I was surprised at how crummy (dirty and wide) some of the stations looked on the P3. This helped a lot: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1160_AM Change the 1160 to whatever frequency you are interested in. I would then jump to the selected station's website. If they had a "what's on now" link, then I could verify that that was indeed the station that I was tuned to. 73, John W2XS -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-for-SWL-tp7626390p7626416.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - perceived RX and TX audio
I received a Bose mini soundlink speaker system for my iPod as a gift from the family. One day, I plugged it into the rear headphone jack of the K3 and tuned into a local AM BCB station playing oldies. It sounded terrific, with nice strong bass. I now use it for all of my K3 operating (which is mostly CW). I never thought that I would use a powered speaker on the K3 but the mini sounds nice and it is small and it is stereo, so the sub-receiver comes through on the right channel. I also use it through the Bluetooth connection for my PC and, of course, the iPod. 73, John W2XS Yes, I am OK with the Audio of my K3 (and, my KX3). But, when I am listening to a Beethoven piano Sonata I choose the Bose over the Elecraft. 73, phil, K7PEH -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/K3-perceived-RX-and-TX-audio-tp7599375p7599401.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K2 Current Draw vs. Options
John The lowest I can get the current down to is 200 mA. That's in battery saver mode (LED graph = off, performance = battery, and LCD backlights = day (off). If I start to turn those options on, I get: LCD = nite = 240 mA Opt = Perf = 300 mA LED = Bar = 320 mA My options are: KAF2 Filter KAT2 tuner KNB2 160m module Internal battery (not used for these tests) SSB Module External PS set so that the internal meter reads 12.4 V. [Elecraft] Elecraft] K2 drop test
Mine was pulled off a table by the feedline wires of a portable antenna when the mast tipped over. The front left top corner directly hit the concrete patio about 4 feet below the table. The front and left side panels sustained some minor damage but the rig still worked FB. The K2 has the battery in it so it is fairly heavy. I ordered and received new panels from Elecraft. 72, John W2XS K2 #1116 KX1 #15 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] An Antenna for the BL2 Balun
I was reading the ARRL's Wire Antenna Classics and noticed an interesting antenna (not that all of them aren't interesting hi hi). This was an article by G0FAH called Four Bands, Off Center (p 1-13, also from QST, Feb 1996). It is a 69-foot antenna with the feedpoint 23 feet from one side and 46 feet from the other. From the antenna to the balun is either 55 or 111 feet of 450-ohm line, or, 50 or 110 feet of 300-ohm line. From the balun to the rig is any length of 50-ohm coax. For 40, 20, and 10 meters, the balun is 4:1. For 15 meters, the balun is 1:1. According to the article, no tuner is needed. Since the BL2 has a switch for 4:1 or 1:1, this may be an application without an antenna tuner. There is no mention of 30m, so that is an unknown. Another unknown might be the matching with respect to height above ground. By the way, I bought a blank BL2 PC board and switch from Elecraft and made my BL1 into a switchable 4:1 or 1:1 balun. 72, John W2XS K2 #1116 KX1 #15 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] portable antenna
I used the no-counterpoise antenna with my KX1. It matched OK but I could not get full power output with that antenna. The seller also had the same experience with his KX1. His K1 did not seem to have that problem. All in all, I still prefer the twinlead-center-fed 40m inverted vee, BL1 balun (4 to 1), and the Jackite 28' pole for portable operation. 72, John W2XS K2 #1116 KX1 #15 Argo 515 #679 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Interesting QSO
I was on my deck today with the KX1 and the bands were really bad here. I was trying a Par 40/20 end fed antenna on top of a new Jackite 28-foot windsock pole. I called CQ near 7040 anyway and a VE3 came back to me. No big deal, but he was on SSB! We had a nice QSO for about 20 minutes. I heard him work a few more stations cross mode. So if you call CQ on 40, open up your bandwidth and you might be answered by VE3AAG (Norm near Ottawa) on SSB. BTW - the Jackite pole is nice, and sturdier than the World Radio SD-20 pole that I had been using. 72, John W2XS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
