You could stop your email delivery and just go to the Elecraft forum on
Nabble and read just what you want. Thats what I do. It's the same as you
get in your email.

[Elecraft] K3 Birdies

2009-08-18 Thread John N1JM

I know this has been discussed quite a bit before but I'm a little
disappointed in the amount of birdies within the ham bands. Seems like
lately I have found more than earlier. I have 3 on 40 meters that are a
least S5 that I don't think were there before and am sure they are generated
within the radio. I know the firmware can be set to get around some of
these. Maybe I need to go in and tighten down screws again. I suppose this
is a characteristic of down conversion ham band only type radios to some
degree. The off-shore manufactured upconverted style radios don't seem to
have this problem. I've never had a birdie within the ham bands on a higher
end general coverage upconversion style radio that I have ever owned and I
have owned a few from I-K-Y.

Sorry for the comments but I just had to vent :-).

I discovered both AF knobs on my K3 #2555 had split just a couple of days

Elecraft! I suppose the new ones look sturdier. I wouldn't want to replace
them with anything else.

This is a YMMV, but personally I don't know why one would want to put all

rather have a separate 6 meter radio, which I do. Of course i could buy
another K3:-D

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noise Reduction

I don't think I have ever had or used a radio where the NR was terrific.
Consequently I hardly ever use NR. Even after all the agc adjustments, etc.
with the K3, my TS480 is about the same. YMMV of course.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio

2009-04-05 Thread John N1JM

I guess I would have to listen to another K3, but the audio is no better than
my TS480 with internal speaker.

If I may throw my two pennies into the discussion -
I use medium quality amplified speakers on my K3, and with the speaker
amplifier turned up and the K3 connected to a dummy load, I hear no
evidence of any "hissy" receiver noise - very quiet.
My conclusion from that is the "hissy" sound is not from the K3 internal
noise.
BTW, the internal speaker is difficult for me to listen to, but that is
the fault of the speaker and not the K3 audio.

When I connect an antenna, I hear sounds that are directly related to
the DSP bandwidth I have dialed in (only the 2.7 kHz filter in this K3),
and also related to the AGC parameters that I have selected.. Sometimes
the band noise is objectionable, but what I am saying is that is band
noise and not K3 noise.

There was a change to the AGC in firmware MCU release 3.03 that in
crowded band conditions could be interpreted as "hiss" or "muddiness",
and I would encourage those who are hearing "hissy audio" to try an
upgrade to the latest beta level firmware.

Thanks. I missed that on the errata sheet. Although it's not to clear how to
set them up. You must enter a frequency in each 0-9 before it becomes active.

All that's necessary is to set "MEM 0-9" to "Band Sel" in
the configuration menu. After that, M->V followed by 1
through 0 will recall the last used frequency/mode on each
band 160 -> 6 (1 = 1.8, 2 = 3.5, 3 = 7, 4 = 10, 5 = 14,
6 = 18.1, 7 = 21, 8 = 24.9, 9 = 28 and 0 - 50 MHz).

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Firmware upgrade harder than construction...Help

2009-04-04 Thread John N1JM

I assume you have no regular serial port. Have you tried the adapter with your
K3 and a control/logging program like HRD? Some usb to serial adapters are
quirky.

John N1JM

After 10 months I decided to upgrade my firmware from the original 2.16
since I just got the KXV3 and KRX3...Frustration!
Have a USB 2.0 to RS232 Serial adapter and have tried it in all my USB
plugs and in Com ports 1, 2, and 4 which are shown as choices on the K3
Utility. The computer tells me my driver is correct, I've matched
9600 baud with the K3 and all I ever get is a "K3 not responding" on Com
Ports 1 and 2, and "Another app connected to" Com port 4. I'd just
order the CD, but that would not solve my communication from the
computer to the K3. What should I try next?

[Elecraft] K3 Assembly

2009-04-03 Thread John N1JM

After 2 months sitting on the bench and 2 weeks of on and off assembly, I
finally have my K3/KPA3/KRX3, etc., up and running. I was a little
apprehensive about lowering the sub receiver into the radio with all the RF
cables in the way and difficulty in seeing the sub-in and sub-out connectors,
but it went in relatively smoothly. So far it is a terrific radio. My only
quibble is that I wish it had band buttons( and yes, I know, there is software
for that and I use HRD) and band stacking registers. I just don't like a radio
tied to a Mac(or PC) all the time, otherwise I might have a Flex :-). But it
sure beats my PRO3 and TS480.
