Re: [Elecraft] KAT3 ATU question

2014-09-27 Thread John Sweeney
Thank you Wayne. I understand about the KAT3 now, keep that wish list
going. Now to decide if go with the KAT3 or KAT500.I use a manual
tuner now. While remote, kind of tuff to get my dog to adjust the manual
tuner.

The KAT3 doesn't recall LC settings just due to VFO rotation, although this
is on the wish-list. The K3 will, however, send frequency commands to an
attached KAT500 tuner as the VFO is moved.

The KAT3 does recall LC settings when you use certain controls, including
BAND UP/DN, FREQ ENT., M>V (memory recall), VFO A/B SWAP, VFO REVerse, etc.

Since the KAT3's relays are all driven at the same time (in parallel),
transmitting in a different part of the band loads new LC settings so
quickly that it doesn't interfere with CW element length.

[Elecraft] KAT3 ATU question

2014-09-27 Thread John Sweeney

Question regarding the KAT3, internal ATU in K3. This is not clear to me in
the product description.

Does the KAT3 retune along with the VFO frequency, once memories are stored,
without RF sent through it? Or, is Tune with transmit RF required for the
ATU to sense the frequency and tune for best match? I believe the
KAT500 adjusts based on rx frequency, but not sure about the KAT3.

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] K3: "XMIT" produces Display "0 W" suddenly

2014-01-17 Thread John Sweeney
Bob,

You say in CW, did you mean to say Data A mode on the K3, which is what you
need for JT65.

Zero output would be what you get if in CW mode and ptt on, with an audio input
type data mode.

Just a thought

I have PF1 set up to do this, toggle SPKR+PH on and off.

It doesn't need a macro command.

Use the K3 CONFG menu, navigate to SPKR+PH, and then hold PF1 (the RIT
button). It says "PF1 Set". Then tap "Menu" to exit the menu.

PF1 now toggles SPKR+PH.

It takes a second or so after you HOLD PF1 for the speaker to turn off.

Trying to set up a macro command to assign to front panel switch, to go from
speaker or phones plugged in rear, but not able to figure the full command.
I got command which brings up the menu option, but not the rest with just
the button press.

Please someone give me the command sequence or lead me to the right page of
the programming manual.

Thank you.

Well, I 'thought' was in the manual, and it *should* be.

Lyle has explained several times here on the reflector (and he should
know, he designed it) that the onset of ALC action is at the 5th bar.
The bars below that do not indicate ALC action at all.

Due to the way the K3 controls power, if you do not have sufficient
audio, the K3 will increase power (thinking there is not enough drive)
and you will find your power drifting upward as you transmit.

So adjust for 4 bars on the ALC meter (that is *no* ALC) so your power
will be uniform throughout the transmission. With the K3 you must have
sufficient audio drive to allow the power controls to work as they
 should.
Contrary to the advice given for most transceivers (which do not control
power in a closed loop), the K3 power will behave strangely if you use
that advice - which is to set the power for maximum and use the audio
drive to control the power output. That just will not work with the K3.
