[Elecraft] Do you believe this guy?

2008-11-03 Thread John Trager
The following is a narrative taken from Sunday Morning's televised
'Meet The Press'. The author is employed by none other than the
Washington Post!!

From Sunday's 07 Sept. 2008 11:48:04 EST, Televised 'Meet the
Press' Senator Obama was asked about his stance on the American Flag.

General Bill Ginn' USAF (ret.) asked Obama to explain WHY he
doesn't follow protocol when the National Anthem is played.
The General also stated to Obama that according to the United
States Code, Title 36, Chapter 10, Sec. 171...

During rendition of the national anthem, when the flag is
displayed, all present (except those in uniform) are expected to stand
at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. Or, at
the very least, 'Stand and Face It'.

Senator Obama replied:
'As I've said about the flag pin, I don't want to be perceived
as taking sides'. 'There are a lot of people in the world to whom the
American flag is a symbol of oppression.'

'The anthem itself conveys a war-like message. You know, the
bombs bursting in air and all that sort of thing.'

ARE YOU READY FOR THIS???

Obama said: 'The National Anthem should be 'swapped' for
something less parochial and less bellicose. I like the song 'I'd Like
To Teach the World To Sing'. If that were our anthem, then, I might
salute it. In my opinion, we should consider reinventing our National
Anthem as well as 'redesign' our Flag to better offer our enemies hope
and love. It's my intention, if elected, to disarm America to the level
of acceptance to our Middle East Brethren. If we, as a Nation of waring
people, conduct ourselves as the nations of Islam where peace prevails -
- - perhaps a state or period of mutual accord could exist between our
governments .'

When I become President, I will seek a pact or
agreement to end hostilities between those who have been at war
or in a state of enmity, and a freedom from disquieting oppressive
thoughts. We as a Nation have placed upon the nations of Islam an unfair
injustice which is WHY my Wife disrespects the Flag and she and I have
attended several flag burning ceremonies in the past'.

'Of course now, I have found myself about to become the
President of the United States and I have put my hatred aside. I will
use my power to bring CHANGE to this Nation, and offer the people a new
path. My wife and I look forward to becoming our Country's First black
Family. Indeed, CHANGE is about to overwhelm the United States of
America'

WHAAAT the Hell is that!!!
Yes, you read it right.

This could possibly be our next President.
I, for one, am speechless!!!

  Dale Lindsborg,
  Washington Post
HOW FAST CAN YOU FORWARD THIS TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW???

Re: [Elecraft] Help with PSK

2008-07-29 Thread John Trager

Tom,

You have to use DATA A with a soundcard program such as HRD or MultiPSK.
Here is what I do:

Turn off Tx ALC in menu. I use VOX instead of the PTT line. Adjust VOX and
ANTIVOX as needed. Adjust LINE IN and audio output from soundcard so that
you get the power output that you want to use (no more than 50 watts with
the 100 watt K3). Use the K3's power meter to adjust. With my HT OMEGA
Claro+ soundcard, I use a LINE setting of 3 and a low output on my soundcard
(about 1/3 from full output). It doesn't take much. Of course you will see
no ALC reading, because it is turned off. The K3 will automatically go into
Tx when it detects audio input... why use PTT if your don't have to. Use
1500Hz center frequency with software, and adjust bandwidth as needed. You
can go as low as 50Hz with PSK31.

Subject: [Elecraft] Help with PSK

I am trying (and failing miserably) to set up my K3 to work PSK31 mode.

I am using a Microham USB Microkeyer II and my normal Logger 32 software
which I have used for aged with my MP running very fb.

The outgoing tones from my K3 dont sound right and a near neighbour says
my signal is very bad

unreadable and very broad.

In the K3, I have the compression set to 0 the mike gain set to 0. I
am in Data mode and using DATA MD havePSK D showing - 31 bps.

My K3 ALC meter is still showing almost full ALC (according to the meter)
with almost now poer output (turned right down).
I have the TX knob on my Microkeyer set at zero and within Logger
soundcard - psk window, have the output set right back, well below the
settings for the MP!

I am receiving PSK no problem at all. The radio is connected to my
computer via the serial port on the rear...

I can run RTTY FSK without any problem whatsoever.

I think i need a little guidance here...

[Elecraft] Worked the FDMDV Digital Voice Mode with K3

2008-05-31 Thread John Trager
Hello all,

I used my Elecraft K3 just now to operate on the FDMDV Mode (14.236Mhz),
Digital Voice. The K3 was set to 10 watts of output power into a Yaesu VL-1000
Solid-State Amplifier, to bring it up to 200 Watts. It worked very well, of
course. Mel (K0PFX) on the other end, said I sounded great. The antenna is a
3-Element STEPPIR, which is up at 34 feet.

Re: Re[Elecraft] ceiver distortion

2008-05-12 Thread John Trager
I did a quick test using my K3 and 756ProIII. With an input of S9+40dB and
the K3's Rx frequency set to 14.20, I set the signal generator for
14.201500 (for a 1500Hz tone).

The K3 seems to have about the same max output whether using the Line Out or
Speaker Out (on the rear of the radio), and it is less than +/- 8000 (using
Adobe Audition.

My 756ProIII has a Line Out of greater than +/- 14000.

Of course when the waveform starts clipping, you can hear the distortion,
which I can also see on the Adobe Audition frequency analysis display.

BTW, when I rotate the RF GAIN control on my K3 full counter-clockwise, it
doesn't make it up to S9+60db! Anybody else notice this? As a result, a
50mV input will not show S9+60dB.

The K3 has the cleanest receive audio I've see thusfar.

I'm likewise a bit skeptical (but I could be wrong) about the alleged K3
rx

audio issues. My experience is that the K3 rx audio is more transparent
and thus any problems with the other guy's audio will be glaringly
apparent

with the K3. This might be what some people are hearing - the bad signals
are going to sound badder on the K3. The K3 rx is less forgiving
because you are hearing better. I do seem to be noticing how bad most
signals sound on 20M ssb lately, although there is the occasional smooth
sounding signal. I routinely A/B with my Orion to confirm what I'm
hearing.

Perhaps folks who are reporting audio issues with the latest firmware can
make some WAV recordings that we can listen to, with the good and bad
firmware versions.

[Elecraft] S/N 687 1st PSK31 Contact

2008-04-27 Thread John Trager
I had my first PSK31 contact with K3 S/N 687. Using an output power of 50
Watts, the IMDs were -29dBc or better, as displayed on the KK7uq IMD Meter.
Why use 5 Watts when you can use 50 Watts? Too many people have 100 watt rigs
and use 10 Watts or less, making it difficult for one to copy them...

My only complaint with the K3 is that is requires very little audio input to
get to 50 Watts! Had the LINE IN setting on 1 and the computers MAIN Volume
and WAVE OUTPUT way down. Can this be changed with different firmware? It
would be nice to be able to leave the computer's level alone, and be able to
have more range with the K3's controls...

Hi all,

I'm leaving Saturday for a long-planned 10-day vacation. I thought we'd
be doing another firmware update before I left. Instead, we'll give our
intrepid field testers more time with this new code, then release it when
I get back.

Here's a sneak preview. All of these features have been fully
implemented:

 - transmit RF delay for slow amplifier relays
 - FM mode, complete with per-band/per-memory PL tones and repeater
splits

 - wider-bandwidth AM and SSB receive
 - further improvements to SSB transmit, including a boost in
low-frequency response
 - absolute S-meter alternative (reading stays the same with
preamp/attn changes)

 - a variation on LIN OUT that allows recording of both RX and TX audio
 - MIC+LINE IN operation for SSB contesters
 - reflected-power-based KPA3 amplifier protection

Many of these have been on the short list for a long time, so we're
anxious to get this major release into your hands. Full details will be
provided in the release notes.
