[Elecraft] No Longer Deaf K3!!!

2020-01-29 Thread John Unger
Thanks to Rick, N1RM, and his expertise in tracing circuits, my K3 is back
in FB working order. We found that a switching diode on the bottom
(fortunately) of the RF board had failed. (I think it was D25.). It was a
low cost fix, and with Rick's surface mount skills a replacement was soon
installed.

Rick's main expertise in working with ham equipment is repairing ACOM amps,
but fortunately he had the ability and equipment to help solve my K3's
problem.

Thanks for all the ideas and feedback here on this reflector.

[Elecraft] Update: K3 Hard of Hearing

2020-01-21 Thread John Unger
Wow, guys, thank you all for the suggestions of things to check, but still
no joy...

Here's your suggestions that I have checked:
voltage - 13.6
RX ANT not on
I uploaded a couple of old config files - not change
Turning RF GAIN fully CCW puts SWR meter at full scale
My other K3 hears FB on all the antennas
This K3 doesn't have an ATU
Switching an antenna in and out makes no apparent difference in received
signals
No change in BP filters; they have been working fine for long time.

I do operate SO2R. The last time radio was working OK was during the NAQP
CW contest where I was running 100W. I have operated KW amps in the past on
each radio without any front end problems (but there's always the first
time, right?).

Thanks again for the help

[Elecraft] Hard of hearing, almost deaf K3

2020-01-21 Thread John Unger
A few days ago one of my K3's appeared to have suddenly gone almost deaf.
Here are some of the symptoms and observations:

- Rig's S meter shows very low or no background noise (strong stations can
still be heard weakly).
- P3 shows http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft

[Elecraft] For Sale: Extreme Isolation EX-29 headphones

2010-02-27 Thread John Unger
Sorry if this is a duplicate of a post that I tried to make a few days ago
through nabble. It wasn't clear that I was able to post the message
successfully that way.

I learned about these headphones from earlier enthusiastic posts on the
Elecraft reflector. The isolation and fidelity they deliver is
extraordinary. They have lived up to all my expectations but now are excess
to my needs because of the present of a Heil Pro-Set Plus headset from my
son! You can check out details of the headphones at:
http://www.quietheadphones.com/product/ex-29/

The headphones have had very little use and are in like-new condition. I
will sell them for $75.00 including USPS Priority mail shipping.

[Elecraft] ICE 419 interface

2008-12-01 Thread John Unger
I am in the process of connecting my K3 to a Model 419 ICE bandpass filter.
Does anyone have a circuit or schematic of how they interfaced this filter
with the outputs on the ACC port on the K3, or do I need a full-blown
solution like the KRC2 band decoder?

[Elecraft] K3 #843 in CW SS

2008-11-05 Thread John Unger
I operated in the CW SS this past weekend as an unassisted, SO2R station. I
had my K3 as the main  radio and was using it for running most of the time;
I used my TenTec Orion as the S&P second radio. It gave me an excellent
opportunity to compare the two rigs under fire.

The biggest thing I noticed was how much easier it was to listen to K3
compared to the Orion. When you are listening to one radio in each ear, you
notice things like this... One feature of the Orion that did come in handy
was using the "Sweep" display to make a quick check for activity on a
"dead" band while still running on the K3.

However, if I had to get rid of one radio, the Orion would be the one to
go... The K3 is a wonderful contest rig!

Re: [Elecraft] K3: cw/vox/PTT ver 2.02 - bug?

2008-06-09 Thread John Unger

Hi Don -

I believe you are wrong here in stating that the delay of RF output after
keying is fixed in the K3. Here is an excerpt of the notes from Wayne for
the MCU 1.87, DSP 1.69 firmware update:

...
"* VARIABLE AMP KEYING DELAY: Added CONFIG:TX DLY menu entry, which sets
the time from KEY OUT jack (active low) to first RF in 1-ms steps, from 8
to 20 ms. To minimize loss of QSK speed, use the shortest delay that
works with your amp. Most will work with the default (minimum) setting of 8
ms."

...

At 09:31 PM 6/8/2008, Don Wilhelm wrote:

... stuff deleted ...

The delay of RF output after keydown is currently fixed in the K3, but
there is consideration being given to allow it to be user controlled in
the future. The adjustment range may be limited, so if you have
transverters and preamplifiers that must have a longer delay to the onset
of RF, the TX INH input would be required.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: ERR TXG message with KPA3

2008-05-06 Thread John Unger

Hi Toby -

Yes, I did turn the KPA3 "on", but thanks for the hint. I should also add
that all my filters have the correct offsets set (with "-" signs...), and I
have the 2.7 KHz filter set as the transmit filter for all modes.

I should probable reiterate that the radio calibrates fine on all bands
with the power level set at 5 Watts.

K3 options can be installed at any time. Once an
option has been installed, use the associated
CONFIG menu entry to enable it (see list below).
Then turn the K3 off and turn it back on. This
allows the K3 to find and test the module.

• KAT3 ATU module: set KAT3 to BYP.

• KBPF3 general-coverage band-pass filter
module: set KBPF3 to NOR (if you’re
installing a KBPF3 on the sub receiver, tap
SUB while in the menu entry).

• KXV3 RF I/O module: set KXV3 to NOR.

• KRX3 sub receiver: set KRX3 to NOR-ANTx
where x is your selected wiring for the sub
receiver’s auxiliary antenna (1 = unused KAT3
ATU antenna, 2 = AUX RF jack, 3 = AUX RF
in parallel with the RX ANT IN jack on the
KXV3). For details on sub receiver antenna
sources, see pg. 22. You may also need to set
up crystal filters for the sub receiver.

• KDVR3 voice recorder: set KDVR3 to NOR.

• KPA3 amplifier module: set the PA MODE
menu entry to PA NOR. See menu entry
listings for information on other settings.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 CW Rx Audio

2008-04-20 Thread John Unger

I'm still waiting for my K3, but...

I guess from the fact that you went through these gyrations means that one
can't simply set the roofing filtering selection on "auto" and dial in a
DSP width of 2700 Hz., e.g., or whatever with a K3 and have the 2700 Hz.
SSB filter as the roofing filter; like I can with my Orion?

What am I missing?

At 04:56 PM 4/20/2008, you wrote:
I tried something last night that may be of interest to some CW ops.
Although most of us are always in search of ways to narrow CW bandwidth,
there are times when listening to CW is made more enjoyable when the
receiver is allowed to open up a bit, especially with AFX activated.

In order to engage in wideband CW reception with the wider crystal and DSP
filters, press SPLIT, then A=>B. Set VFO A for either LSB or USB. Then,
set VFO B to CW. Next, press and hold the SUB button to link VFO A with
VFO B. The CW offset can be made to match the sidetone frequency by
setting VFO A and B to slightly different frequencies (difference being
the side-tone frequency). I stored my settings into memory so I don't
have to go through all the gyrations next time. With this approach, the
rig is transmitting CW on VFO B, but listening in either LSB or USB on VFO A.

It's important to set the Rx frequency on VFO A up by the offset amount
(e.g., 600 Hz) for CW LSB receive, and down by the offset amount for CW
USB receive. My tests show that QSK performance remains super-fast and is
not affected with this procedure.

[Elecraft] Microphone compatibility - Another Solution

2008-02-13 Thread John Unger
What I have done with all my non-rig-specific microphones (2) and Heil
headset/mics (3) is to install a simple stereo 1/4" jack on them. Then I
have short pigtail adapters with the rig-correct mic plug on one end and a
1/4" stereo plug on the other. Makes it easy for going from one rig to
another with dynamic mics. I am connecting only the audio, PTT, and GND, of
course.

As usual, YMMV...
