A: Top-posting.
Q: What is the most annoying thing on usenet and in e-mail?

-should the bumpers actually touch the front cover or are they used just
in case? I did my best to use little solder and trim leads short, but
the bumpers do not really lie flat and I'm a little worried they might
come off someday.

Andrea,

I cut the rubber bumpers into halves so they could lay flat against the
board in between solder pads. I just made sure the rubber pads stood taller
than the solder connections. I, too, didn't think they would stick too long
either...

[Elecraft] KXB30: Devil's in the Details

2005-01-24 Thread John_K7FD

I'm happy to report KX1 #959 is now sporting options KXB30 and KXAT1...and
all is working as one seamless unit!

I must admit that the dinky KXB30 is a deceiving little board! By the time
you route the wires down through the main KX1, you've earned your stripes on
this puppy. The detail work required isn't difficult but if you've got all
thumbs, good luck!

One note; the rubber pads for the 30 meter module had me scratching my head.
My soldered leads were pretty darn 'flush' but certainly not flat or smooth
enough to have those pads adhere worth a hoot. I ended up cutting the rubber
pads into slimmer strips that were then strategically placed in between
solder points so as to get a nice flat bond to the pcb and still offer
rubber bumper protection.

Second note: the manual states that one of the 30 meter alignment trimmers
may be 'broad'; in my case, broad meant finding 'no' peak on the one nearest
the bandwidth pot. I used my K2 as a reference signal and could not
determine any peak what so ever. Tomorrow when I can hear WWV, I'll try to
peak it again. The other 30m trimmer peaked nicely.

As far as the KXAT1, the optional power calibration will be performed
tomorrow as well. Can't believe the P6.3 it's saying for output...this is
with pots R1 and R2 set to 60% as per errata sheet...

All in all, a delightful trip down kit building lane...with a few detours
along the way!

[Elecraft] KX1 stand: Mini Tripod

2005-01-19 Thread john_k7fd
I decided to use a fully adjustable mini camera tripod for using the KX1 in the
shack. The tripod only stands 3 inches tall or so and it's plenty stable enough
for in-shack use...and looks very slick. The KX1 now sports a perfect 45 deg
angle and sets on there like a masterpiece painting.

My thought is to get another back panel; that way I'll have one for batteries
and one with the tripod...both ready to go anytime.

With any luck I'll post a picture on the web later this evening...if anyone
wishes to take a look.

So far the KX1 is very addictive; even the K1 and K2 are getting lonely. And
the Icom's are way past lonely, they're fossilized.

[Elecraft] KX1 45 deg stand?

2005-01-16 Thread John_K7FD

Since I'm primarily using my KX1 in the shack, has anyone devised a nice
stand for it? I'd like to be able to look at those cool red LED's...

Seems like a simple stand might do the trick and wonder if anyone has come
up with the perfect solution? Like maybe the KXS1 :)

Since I use an external paddle, a 45 degree stand would make a nice angle
don't you think?

[Elecraft] KX1 Maiden Voyage

2005-01-16 Thread John_K7FD

My initial CQ on twenty meters was quickly picked up by none other than
another KX-1 ! Thanks to Dan and his mighty attic dipole, KX-1 nr 959 logged
its first QSO -- thanks OM!

The rig works beautifully despite this op's goofy mistakes ;) Somehow, after
being s careful, I still managed to end the kit and have a resistor and
capacitor still in the muffin tin! R10 and C19; both checked off in the
manual and both left out...go figure! And lastly, the ol' headphone in the
key jack trick...can you hear me now? Sheesh...

Overall, I'm really liking this radio! I really like what I'm hearing in the
receiver. I also like the keying/QSK; very smooth with minimal thump. Now to
play and then later in the week tackle the 30m module and ATU.

Thanks again Dan N0TK for being Q number 1!

[Elecraft] New KX-1 hearin' stuff...

2005-01-15 Thread John_K7FD

Well I made it to the second alignment stage. I found that plugging the
headphones into the headphone jack and not the key jack works much better
for testing ;)

All tests passed with flying colors and the receiver perked right up using
my K2 on a dummy load for a signal source. I'm listening to shortwave on 40m
right now but gave it a brief brush w/ cw, too. That filter is nice!
But...of course! It's an Elecraft...

The receiver is hotter than a firecracker...glad I've got that RF Gain
control! Knowing Wayne's backpacker bent, mostly likely designed for a wire
hung in a coconut tree instead of that 3 element quad on 20m :)

Anyway, I'll probably just let it sit here and cook for awhile...I'm having
too much fun toolin' around the bands (all 2 of 'em!!)...

[Elecraft] The Thrill is Back!

2005-01-10 Thread John_K7FD
Been a while since K1 #78 left the assembly line here at K7FD. So it was
with great joy that I received KX-1 #959 from Santa! Tonight saw the first
alignment test...and a big smile! I guess it goes without saying you get
more than just a radio when you build an Elecraft...

Having adopted a 'qrp lifestyle' last year (-55 lbs, thanks Subway!) I'm
really looking forward to hitting the trail lighter than ever this spring
with my new KX-1; thanks Team E!

Now back to the assembly line...
