[Elecraft] MH2 Microphone issue

2011-02-25 Thread KA1YMX

I have a K2 with the SSB option installed and I am having issues getting the
MH2 microphone to work. I am currently using a Heil Pro-Set with the K2 and
everything is working fine. I have checked the back of the microphone
connector and everything appears to be connected properly. The 5.6k resistor
is installed between pins 1 and 6 and all of the jumpers are installed. The
PTT button on the MH2 works but my voice is not heard on a separate
receiver. According to my manual I should be able to use the same microphone
settings for the Mh2 and pro-set. Can someone help me out?

Re: [Elecraft] MH2 Microphone issue

2011-02-25 Thread KA1YMX

All of the jumpers are installed. I measured the voltage on pins 1 and 6 and
the voltage is approximately 3.1 vdc. I can still use the K2 with the
Pro-Set and it works fine. The MH2 does not work even though the KSB2 manual
says the configuration is the same.

Re: [Elecraft] MH2 Microphone issue

2011-02-25 Thread KA1YMX

The 5v regulator U5 on the control board has an output of 3.0v. I
disconnected the front panel from the control panel and the output is still
around 3.0v. Do you think the lower voltage could affect the operation of
the microphone?

I also noticed there is an update to grounding the microphone jack. Could
the lack of ground some how cause this?

Re: [Elecraft] MH2 Microphone issue

I replaced the 5v regulator and the 5v line is now reading 5vdc. The MH2
still does not work. I also plugged in the Pro-Set and the pro-set works
fine. Do you think the microphone could be broken? I have never used it
before so I am not sure it works.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB Receive issue

2011-01-16 Thread KA1YMX

The USB and LSB BFO for each filter was almost identical to each other. I
used the BFO numbers in the K2 SSB manual as a starting point and used
spectrogram to fine tune the filters. I am now able to receive readable SSB
on all bands. I knew it was something I overlooked. Thank you for your help.

[Elecraft] K2 SSB Receive issue

2011-01-15 Thread KA1YMX

I recently finished aligning my K2 with the spectrogram software and with the
procedures from Elecraft. I am able to receive SSB on all bands except on
21m and 12m. The SSB signal is very distorted and sounds like the filter is
not wide enough to receive the SSB signal. I completed all of the
alignments in the manual without any issues. I know I must have missed
something small but cannot figure it out. Before I start to adjust anything
on the K2, does anyone have any suggestions?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB Receive issue

2011-01-15 Thread KA1YMX

I am sorry I should have mentioned I have the KSB2 SSB board installed. I
followed the K2 Dial calibration procedures on your website to verify
everything is aligned properly and it is. I checked for SSB reception on 21m
and 12m and the SSB audio is still distorted. All other bands work below
21m.

I shouldn't have used the word distortion. The SSB stations are completely
unreadable, very similar to a narrow filter.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB Receive issue

2011-01-15 Thread KA1YMX

I used my K3 to transmit a USB/LSB on all bands except for 10m. The only two
bands that I could receive a readable SSB signal was on 20m and 17m. I tried
USB and LSB on all other bands and could not receive a readable signal. I
used my S-Meter to adjust the frequency on the signal in which I did not
have a readable signal and the peak of the signal on the K2 was about 2.2
khz below the indicated frequency on the K3. I adjusted and verified the K2
is on frequency using WWV prior to performing this test so I know both the
K2 and K3 are on frequency.

[Elecraft] VCO control voltage range

2010-09-04 Thread KA1YMX

I am trying to adjust the VCO control voltage on the RF board and having an
issue. When the VFO is set to 3500 khz the voltage is around 1.5vdc but the
voltage goes above 7.5vdc around 4500khz. I checked c71-c74, and d21-d26 and
all are the correct parts. I checked T5 for the proper number of turns, 16
red and 4 green and the windings soldered to the correct hole. The book
states I need 16 turns red and 4 green but figures 6-16 and 6-17 both have
14 turns red and 4 green. Which is correct? Is there anything else I can
check?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Initial Power up

2010-08-18 Thread KA1YMX

I inspected all of my solder joints and found a few pins that did not have
proper wetting. The solder was not touching the pin. I was using a different
type of solder and wanted to try it on the K2. I ended up removing all of
the solder from the pins without proper wetting and used no-clean solder
that I normally use. Now the joints look perfect. I have always used
no-clean solder without any flux at a temp of 650f and I have never had a
problem before. I guess that's what I get for using something new.

I did get an info 80 error code when I switched to the 15m band. I turned
the power off several times to try to repeat the error but could not repeat
the code. I followed the troubleshooting procedures in the book for the info
80 code and all of the signals checked out fine. What is your opinion on
info 80 showing up once?

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Initial Power up

2010-08-17 Thread KA1YMX

I bellowed all of the solder joints and it works now. I did get info 80 error
code when I switched the band to 80m. I turned the power off and the code went
away. I cannot get the error code to repeat. I followed the troubleshooting
procedures in the book and everything looks good. Do you think i should check
anything else?

Nate,

I cannot say whether that would help or not - while it is possible that
it would work, if it does not work with the external oscillator, then
you have not discovered much of anything. There are several
possibilities. First is that you just may not be hearing the 4 MHz
oscillator.
Even if the 4 MHz oscillator does not start, you will still see the K2
try to power on - yes, it will not be successful, but at least you
should detect a blink.

Substitution is the quickest way to localize a problem.
Do you have any other K2 owners around? If so, perhaps they would let
you temporarily swap their Control Board for theirs. If it works, you
know that the problem is on your Control Board. Next step would be to
put their firmware chip on your Control Board. If yours works, then you
will know that the firmware chip has been damaged.
Use good anti-static measures when changing out a firmware chip, they
can be damaged by mishandling.

I would rather see you checking the components in you 4 MHz crystal
area, C21, C22 and X2 for proper values and good soldering. While
anything can be faulty, the chance that the crystal is bad is small.

dogbulter wrote:
Since I cannot detect the 4mhz oscillator at the MCU (U6), I was wondering if
I could use an external clock to make sure everything else is working. I
would use a Pongrance Digital VFO to inject a 4mhz signal into pin 14 (OSC1)
and remove C21, C22, and X2. If this works I could at least determine
something is wrong with the oscillator section.

Please let me know what you think.
