[Elecraft] K2 & Heil Microphone
I have a Heil headset that I have been using with my TenTec Jupiter. I want to use it with my K2. My K2 is set up for the Elecraft MH2 microphone. Can I simply order a Kenwood adapter for use with the Heil to interface with the K2? [Elecraft] K2 & High Current Message
When keying up my K2 in SSB at 10 watts I get a momentary flash of high current. Is this a sign of a problem? Seems like there is a setting in the menu in regards to this, but want to be sure before I do anything. The transmit is fine, just the momentary flash of high current. Thanks! [Elecraft] Re: Portable Antennae
Hey Mike: I would love to get the PDF with the info. This sounds exactly like what I am looking for. Thanks! Ken/NO4D Mike Morrow wrote: Ken wrote: ...I would like to construct a good portable antennae to use while camping I have played around with multi-band HF antennas for camping and backpacking for more than 30 years. I've tried resonant dipoles with and without traps, untuned dipoles fed with balanced line, simple and complex verticals, fed-fed wires, etc. I have never found anything that works as well as the least-expensive of the above...the resonant dipole. I have never found anything that works as poorly as verticals. Portable verticals, lacking a very good ground system, are very poor in performance compared to a dipole, if a side-by-side comparison at the same site and the same time is done. Outrageously priced vertical "dummy loads," such as those produced under the "Outbacker" name (with that bogus "ground coupling" base) are among the very worst. Most (or all) commercial vertical offerings allow the waste of hundreds of dollars to prove that contacts can still be made using the poorest of antenna systems. For the past 20 years I've used a dipole with appropriate insulators located in each leg that can be jumpered to get a resonant dipole, without traps, on any band between 40m and 10m. I use PCV water tubing for the insulators, and flex- or super-weave wire that has withstood many set-up/take-down cycles without the first sign of wire fatique failure. It takes less than a minute to lower the antenna and alter the jumpers to change band. I have worked more than 40 countries from camp sites using this antenna less than 10 feet above ground. I can send anyone interested a small .pdf file that describes all the details and dimensions. It's all quickly home-made at very low cost. [Elecraft] Portable Antennae
While I await my K3 (sometime in June) I would like to construct a good portable antennae to use while camping (RV camping). [Elecraft] K3 Ordered
Ok...ok...do you remember the time you said no that you would not do something and then you eat your words and do so? Well, when the first words about the K3 hit the list and I was the price I said "nope, not me...to much money". Well...the order has been placed for the QRP K3 and ATU! I KNEW that I should not start reading all of the reviews about the K3! I KNEW better than to read the "happy" reports of those who had just completed the building process! Oh well, while I wait for the shipment in early summer, I have to sell some equipment. Looks like I will have an Icom 746, a KX1, and probably my K2 up for sell. Then again, I may keep the K2 and sell the TenTec Jupiter...hmmm what to do? Now the waiting begins! 73 & God Bless! [Elecraft] K2 4686
Well.it is hard to believe but K2 #4686 is alive and well! For some two to three years I had dreamed of building a K2, but for lack of funds and fear of failure I kept putting it off. Finally, the itch got to be to much for me. So, back in February I called Lisa and placed my order. Except for a couple of small miscues on my part the build went without a hitch! I made my maiden SSB contacts yesterday and am setting up a sked for my maiden CW contact. Is it OK if I stick out my chest and get a little puffed up with pride?! [Elecraft] Signal Tracing - Success!
Well, with my head hanging low and a sheepish look on my face...I can report that I have completed Phase II Testing with success! I had asked for some assistance yesterday with signal tracing in order to find where the signal was being lost. After reading some replys, *trying* to read and understand the schematic some more, I went out of town for the night. While gone the schematic for C6 became crystal clear in my mind and I knew exactly what I had done. When the directions said to use the OUTER two pads for installing C6 on the bottom of the board, I understood that to mean the two OUTER pads that were closest to the side of the board. Don't ask me how I came to that conclusion...I don't know! I realized last night that the center pad was a ground pad! Maybe for numbskulls such as myself, the directions should say something like "install C6 to pads 1 and 3 on the bottom side of the board". Boy...do I fell sheepish...especially since Don had asked me point blank if I had C6 installed correctly. In my mind at that time I did. OK...on to the rest of the build! Boy, I am beginning to somewhat understand the schematic! Isn't that scary... -- 73 & God Bless, Ken/NO4D http://webpages.charter.net/kgk Ambassadors For Christ Net +/- 7.280 M-F at 2:00 EST Sat at 2:30 EST ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 Signal Tracing
I am in section II alignment of my K2. I am not getting a signal from my antenna jack to the output. I am using Tom Hammond's method of signal tracing using the lead of a capacitor attached to a clip that is attached to an antenna. I have a signal when injected at the following test points; c143, c141, c53, d6, and c5. Then at c4 I have a signal on the right hand lead (away from the board edge), but no signal on the left hand lead (near the board edge). I have already replaced c4 with a new 820 capacitor, but still no signal at that point. Could you point me in the direction that I need to go next? -- 73 & God Bless, Ken/NO4D http://webpages.charter.net/kgk Ambassadors For Christ Net +/- 7.280 M-F at 2:00 EST Sat at 2:30 EST ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KX-1 output problem
Hey John: I had a similar problem with my KX1. It ended up being a bad solder joint on a resistor pack. I cannot remember which one, but if you look at the schematic you will be able to locate it. After applying a little heat to the joint all was OK. Hope this helps in some way. Ken/NO4D john gindlesberger wrote: I recently finished my KX-1 and installed the ATU board only to find that my ouput is only about 0.9 watts on 40 and 0.2 on 20. When I finished the basic KX-1, I put it on an uncalibrated QRP wattmeter and it read about 2 watts, so I thought I was in the ballpark. Now, assuming that my original 2 watt reading is really 0.9, I find that the output is the same both with and without the ATU, so the problem must be in the transmitter and not the ATU. The KX-1 checked out fine through stages 1 and 2 and the resistance readings for stage 3 were all OK. I just checked the voltages on Q4, Q5 and Q6 and they are within 10% of the table. I've checked the continuity for all the toroids and T1, as well and recounting the turns and lead placement. The output control is fully clockwise and the output is being fed into a 50 ohm dummy load. All control functions appear to be working correctly and the receiver seems to be normal on all the bands.
