[Elecraft] For Trade: KPA1500 for KPA500/KAT500 + $

2023-05-11 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Hello All,

I am looking to see if there is anyone out there interested in upgrading their
KPA500/KAT500 to the KPA1500 (plus some $). I really don’t need a legal limit
amp so I thought first I would check here to see if there is some interest.

Thanks for looking!

[Elecraft] [P3] REF LVL changes - normal behavior?

2020-09-07 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Hey guys, I am seeing this behavior on my P3 and am wondering if this is how
it's supposed to work or or there is something wrong.

I set the REF LVL so I am just above the noise floor and then randomly a few
minutes later either the floor goes way down or way up. In other words, I
adjust the waterfall to show normal then randomly it will show nothing at all
except the strongest peaks as if I adjusted the REF LVL way up or it shows a
lot of noise as if I adjusted the REF LVL way down. So I have to keep an eye on
it and constantly adjust the REF LVL. Its been doing this for the past 6 months
or so it didn’t always do this.

The P3 is connected to my K3s which is having no problems. ATT is on, pre-amp
off, AGC is fast.

Cheers!

[Elecraft] P3 SVGA board blinking red light

2020-07-25 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
My P3SVGA board is acting up and there is a blinking red light on the board
(did not notice that before because the lid was always on).

Is the blinking red light bad? If yes, is there something I can do about it?

My symptoms are that I am unable to successfully load the FPGAx firmware - it
fails for all FPGA’s with “block 657 write failed”.

Thanks guys!

[Elecraft] KAT500 question: using the KAT500 with multiple transceivers using a coax switch

2019-06-01 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Greetings all and thank you for a great list with lots of great information!

Help me understand something on the KAT500. I have the Elecraft “Dream” setup
as I think it is called with the K3s, KAT500, KPA500, and P3. I love it.

I have trained the KAT500 according to instructions.

My question is, now that the KAT500 is trained, can I plug in any source
(transceiver) and the tuning will be remembered? That is, it really doesn’t
matter what the source is, the KAT500 doesn’t know or care and the source
device will get the benefit of the KAT500?

What I want to do is take the cable that goes from my KPA500, run it through an
Alpha Delta 4B coax switch, then to the KAT500. Another connection to the coax
switch will come from a Collins KWM-2 I recently purchased. I want the KWM-2 to
get the benefits of the KAT500 tuner. So I just change the switch to decide
which transceiver is connected to the KAT500.

Sound correct? If not, suggestions?

Thanks,
Michael

[Elecraft] Recommend a K3s foot switch

2019-04-16 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Hi guys! I searched around a bit nothing conclusive so thought I’d ask.

I am needing a foot switch for my K3s which is also connected to my
KPA500/KAT500 setup.

I purchased a Heil FS-3 however it has a 1/4” phono plug on it and the K3s has
an RCA jack (like a dummy I did not look at the back of the radio before I
bought it).

So, recommend an adapter or I can take this one back to HRO and get something
else?

Recommendations?

Re: [Elecraft] SVGA for P3 - only looking for ten (10) replies (is that possible?)

2018-07-23 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Thanks to all who replied very informative and congratulations to the rest for
holding back we only had seven (7) replies so not overwhelming :-)

To summarize the replies:

Although the SVGA addition is very nice it is not absolutely necessary as the
P3 as it is provides adequate resolution in its smaller (8”?) display. However
the benefits of the SVGA option include:

Better “view” into the spectrum when operating Split/chasing DX
With the better resolution comes the ability to “see” smaller signals and pull
them out of the noise
With the larger display there is more physical area to see things including
longer timeline of the waterfall (two minutes?)
Easier to see if eyesight is diminished/diminishing for us older folks
Quicker to glance over and see the important stuff as it is larger
The built-in FFT processor provides much better resolution (4x?) and 1080p
(1920x1080)
Larger decode window for PSK/CW modes

So the consensus is that the option is worth the cost if you have room for the
monitor (which really can be anywhere from 20” up) however the P3 stands on its
own quite nicely. My P3 arrives today sans SVGA option so I’m going to use it
for a while “barefoot” (Hi Hi) before I decide to add in the SVGA.

[Elecraft] SVGA for P3 - only looking for ten (10) replies (is that possible?)

2018-07-22 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Hi guys, hoping this discussion will be limited. However, that said...

For those that have experience, is the SVGA option really necessary for the P3?
Does it really add a lot? I don’t need the keyboard/ digital features it adds,
just asking if a larger (20”+) SVGA display is worth it or is the default
smaller display just fine? Is there some scenario where the bigger display
really makes the difference or is it that bigger is better rules?

Thanks!

Re: [Elecraft] Filters

2018-06-30 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Good info on the filters I had never tried the LO/HI CUT and I like it. One
question: On my K3S I cannot set the LO CUT to .35KHz it only steps in .10
increments not 0.05 increments is there some CONFIG item I need to change? I
looked through the CONFIG menus and Fred Cady’s book however I did not see
anything about setting that step.

[Elecraft] KPA500 amplification and microphone

2018-06-30 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Hello guys!

I got my very first amp on Wednesday, a KPA500 and started using it along with
the KAT500 I ordered and a K3S I purchased last month.

Here is my question: I noticed that when I transmit, the power output varies
significantly depending upon how close my mouth is to the Kenwood MC-60
microphone (no batteries in the mic). Is this normal? And how do I make this
more consistent? Try to always put my mouth in the same relative position? Buy
a different microphone?

Thanks,
Michael

[Elecraft] power requirements for a K3S, KPA500, KAT500, P3?

2018-06-13 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Kind of a dumb question however here goes:

I got my K3S a short while ago and now I want to add the KPA500 and KAT500 to
it however it just now occurred to me that I should check how much juice I need
to power that thing!

I’m currently using an Alinco DM-330MV which I believe puts out 30A continuous
however its probably plugged into one the house 15A lines.

So my questions are:

1) Will 15A house line supply enough juice for the K3S, KPA500, KAT500, and in
the future a P3 Panadaper?

2) If not can I get away with replacing the breaker with a 20A breaker? 30A?

3) Will the Alinco be big enough or should I upgrade that as well?

Thanks guys,
Michael

Re: [Elecraft] K3S - Help me decide on which options to purchase

2018-05-22 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Hi guys!

Received my K3S yesterday afternoon and was on the air in about an hour. Made
three QSOs with my favorite Net, the OMISS 40m, so everything is working as
expected. Tuned around the bands later and listened in on the ANZA DX net from
Australia and also heard a guy from New Zealand both on 20m. Couldn’t stay up
too late as I have work this AM but was very excited and could have been up a
lot longer. Just love being back on the air!

Thanks Elecraft and this group for the support and info. Looking forward to
many years behind the mic.

By the way, I opted for just a minimal configuration right now - the “Casual
User” package with the "2.8 filter swap”. Its a K3S with the antenna tuner and
100w amp. Good enough for my current needs.

I cut my programming teeth on a VAX-11/780 - sure brings back some great

Another idea is to check the port settings on the router to ensure the port
that Elecraft is using is “open”.

[Elecraft] WTB Wanted K3S

2018-05-12 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
I’m now looking for a K3S. Would prefer 100W with KAT3A antenna tuner however
will consider all offers.

Let me know what you got!

Re: [Elecraft] K3S - Help me decide on which options to purchase

2018-05-11 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Thanks for all the replies and good advice!
I’m going to get the K3S with the antenna tuner (I’m just using a wire strung
between two trees) and the 2.7kHz filter. I’ll add filters as I see the need
and the other stuff too like a DVR, second Rx, etc. I’ll just wait until my
experience progresses and I really feel like I would benefit from the various
options. I was reminded that the parts are calibrated at the factory ready for
me to install them at a later date if I wish and that its not that hard until
you get the second Rx so I can add filers and other options myself as needed.
Probably order the “Casual User” package as its slightly cheaper to go that
route than a la cart. I still have my old antenna, mic, headphones, power
supply, etc so just need the radio.

Thanks again for all the emails!

[Elecraft] K3S - Help me decide on which options to purchase

2018-05-11 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Hi guys,

I’m looking to purchase a K3S in the near future and I would like y’alls input
on which options to include. I had a K3 before however due to financial issues
I had to sell it. Now I want to get back into radio again and I want to get a
K3S.

I mostly get on the OMISS Nets on 40m however I want to also learn how to Dx on
20m (and other bands?) soon. And I want to eventually start CW after I teach
myself how to CW. Those are my near term goals (next two years). One
consideration is that whatever I include when I order the K3S will be installed
and calibrated by Elecraft at the factory. If I added options later I would
have down time and cost of shipping and cost of the work as well (I don’t
really want to do it myself even though I did build my first K3).

I am likely going to include the 2.7 filter.

Other possible options are:

Other filters
General Rx
Second Rx
???

Thanks,
Michael

Re: [Elecraft] MacOSX Logging Software

2015-07-10 Thread Michael Gillen via Elecraft
Byron,
I have not used the RUMsoft (yet) however I am happy with MacLoggerDX. Besides
just logging the QSOs there are many more features, with the DX Clusters being
one that is really neat. It integrated well with my K3. When you change the
VFO, it shows in the software. When you click on a DX Spot, it changes your VFO
to that frequency, etc. I do not have a rotor (yet) however I am sure that also
likely works well too. Every feature works well.
You can export one or more QSOs to an QDIF file which is the standard for QSOs.
They can then be loaded into LoTW and eQSL etc. You can also confirm QSOs by
importing an ADIF from LoTW which is nice.
It has a lot of features.
Support is tops. The developer typically responds within an hour. He is very
nice to deal with.
It was well worth the $100
Shoot me an email at mmgillen at me.com if you'd like to discuss offline.
