[Elecraft] Low power on 20M band once ATU is installed

2016-02-13 Thread Michael via Elecraft
I just built a new K1 and had some problems with the output power. To make
a long story short I
ended up having to lower the values of R5 and R11... This brought the
power levels up on
the 40 M band from 1.5 to 6.5 Watts and on the 20 M band from 0.5 to 5.5
Watts. Figured all was well now until I installed the new ATU

For some reason my output power on the 20M band into a 50 Ohm dummy load is
only around 0.7 Watts now with the ATU installed. If I remove it - it
goes back up to normal!

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Michael

[Elecraft] K1 Low Power on 20M band once ATU is installed...

2016-02-27 Thread Michael via Elecraft
Still have not figured out what's wrong with my newly built K1 w/ ATU.

For some reason everything is fine on the 40 M band but once I switch to 20
 M the power output
drops way down. On the low part of the band the power output is much higher
 but still too low.

I went thru all the C and L parameters in the ATU menu and checked the TX
output power and SWR.

Here is what I found:

 http://n2zdb.com/K1problem20M.jpg

Since there are 4 inductors and 5 capacitors what does L0 and C0 represent?

Figuring there was a problem with an inductor - I added a short between all
the inductors at the relays (pins 3 to 4). This did not make a difference.
However when a wire was added to K1 pin 4 to k4 pin 3 the power did come
up a couple of Watts.

I need an EXPERT to figure this out...does anyone have any ideas?

[Elecraft] K1 Low Power on 20M band once ATU is installed...fixed!

2016-02-27 Thread Michael via Elecraft
Well it is finally fixed. When I went to listen to the signal on my K3 I
noticed the frequency was off around 500 Hz or so. Tried to adjust the
sidetone pitch and nothing happened - test mode audio was weak and frequency
would not change with C13.

I moved C13 back and forth a little and the tone came in nice and strong -
with a adjustable pitch.

Re-installed ATU and now a full 5.5 Watts on 20 Meters using a 3 cell Li-Po
 (12.2 Vdc)!

Looks like a defective C13 or cold solder joint.

The owner of this K1 will be happy when he hears this news!

[Elecraft] KPA100 unable to get a low null for SWR cal

2014-12-28 Thread Michael via Elecraft
Usually I can get a SWR null around 10 - 15 mV with the power level at 2W.

For some reason I can only adjust it down to around 200 mV into a 50 Ohm
dummy load. I have tried changing the diodes and U5 but they did not make a
difference. Also rewound T4 using another toroid.

Also noticed that when I disconnect the dummy load and transmit at the 2W
adj level both FOR and REFL voltages are about the same (TP4 = 1.1Vdc, IC5
pin 7=1.1Vdc)! Shouldn't the VREFL be much higher then the VFWD?

Both pots are adj to 27.8 kOhms for power calibration at 2W using a
LP-100A.

When transmitting 2W into 50 Ohm load (K2 display shows "2.1W 1.4:1")
LP-100A shows approx. 2W SWR- 1.05:1

VFWD = 0.822 Vdc  (IC5 pin 7)
VREFL= 0.173 Vdc  (IC5 TP4 )

Why is the K2 showing a much higher SWR then it should be showing? Could
there be a problem with U6?

I did not build this K2/100 and have found mistakes along the way then
trying to get it working properly I can't seem to find any in this area yet
 though!

Anyone have an idea what could be the problem?

Thanks,

Michael

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 unable to get a low null for SWR cal

2015-01-01 Thread Michael via Elecraft
Thank you to Don W3FPR who solved my problem!

I could not get the swr null lower than 200 mV.

Provided trim cap C1 was brown and did not have the minimum capacitance
required. I used a Murata green trimmer cap which now allows me to go
down to
7.5 mV and the SWR shown on all bands into a dummy load it 1.0:1.

The replacement cap from Elecraft is part number E540012 (5 pF to 15 pF
white body) which should be used at C1.

[Elecraft] KIO3B

2015-09-10 Thread Michael via Elecraft

Wouldn’t it be nice if current K3 owners who already have the “older”
options (KIO3, KSYN, KXV3, KBPF3, etc.) could get these
options (newer improved versions) at a discounted price? If you add
these up they are not cheap!
I myself would like the KIO3B, KSYN3A, KXV3A, KBPF3A (I think the current
one can be modified), and have already spent a lot for the older versions
(If I would have known I would have waited on some)!

[Elecraft] Does your KDVR3 for the K3 work with the internal K144XV?

2015-09-18 Thread Michael via Elecraft
I have the K144XV 2M module installed in my K3 and for some reason I
cannot record
the FM repeater activity using the KDVR3 voice recorder. In this mode it
has never worked.

Is this normal and a known problem?

The recorder icon shows it is recording but when I go to play it back
"END" just comes up and nothing happens

Now if I turn my K3 to lets say the 10M band and try to play it also just
shows "END". However re-booting my K3 and recording 5 seconds (for ex on
10M)than playing it back actually has some of the 2M recording along with
other previous recordings.

Also switching to 2M and doing a playback now also works...although not
all of the 2M recording is there.

Strange?

Thanks,

Hi Michael,

To be fully seated, the "wings" on the plugs must be right down against
the "collar" on the socket. Having one of those TMP cable ends not fully

contact, which is really fun to chase.

When it's right, there won't be even 1/16 inch between the wings and the

[Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter 440 band accuracy?

2017-07-30 Thread Michael via Elecraft
I just purchased a new Yaesu digital handheld and the power level on the
440 band is low (2.8 v 5.0 Watts), and was wondering if I can trust the W2's
accuracy? Another mobile higher powered transceiver also reads low on all
power levels on the 440 band.

I built the kit version of the W2 and have the VHF/UHF coupler

Why is there a +/- calibration button on the PC interface if the unit is
calibrated properly?

I can send my HT back to be tested and exchanged if it isn't making specs
but don't want to be told that
my wattmeter reading was inaccurate!

Re: [Elecraft] W2 Wattmeter 440 band accuracy?

2017-07-30 Thread Michael via Elecraft
OK so I am trying to measure around 5 Watts or so on the W2's 20 Watt
scale. The spec's for the W2 directional couplers are listed at 0.5 dB
accuracy. Is this anywhere or just at full scale? How much could it be off at
only 25% of full scale?

Trying to decide if the 2.8 Watts I am reading at 440 MHz on high power is
too low with a spec of 5 Watts output! If it is I can send it back to the
place of purchase to be checked and exchanged if necessary.

There seems to be no problem on the 2 Meter band at only 25 % of scale (5
Watts) readingjust on 440.
