Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Low output during initial TX alignment
Hi, John- Since I am the fellow who provides the pre wound toroids, I would like to offer that I do include a note with my K2 sets instructing the builder not to pull the leads too tightly while installing K2-T2 . Its design is a little unusual insofar that the toroid is spaced slightly up off of the PCB, its green secondary leads hidden under the core. I tin most parts up to or onto the core itself, and with this part care must be taken not to distort how the lengthy green leads are positioned since this could result in pulling some enamel into the PCB. 73, Mychael AA3WF K2#1025 It was definitely a improperly tinned green lead on T2. So much for buying pre-wound/tinned 'roids to save me some grief. Heh. Re: [Elecraft] Toroid Winding Question
Hi, Kevin- Some of the ferrite cores can be a bit rough around the edges. When I encounter a batch that exhibits this characteristic, I use a drill-bit to clean up the burr prior to winding. Pick a drill-bit of a size substantially larger than the toroid's inner diameter, and spin its tip back and forth a few times in the toroid's hole. You should fine that the burr comes off easily. I don't usually have trouble with the OD of the toroid, but in that case you could use some fine sand paper. 73, Mychael / AA3WF K2 #1025 With respect to toroid sharp edges, should one rub some wet and dry abrasive paper around the edges before winding? Wow. A thread dedicated to me! It has been pleasing to read the nice comments from my fellow hams and builders. If it isn't to their liking I will ship out whatever sets they need the same or next day, depending upon when I receive their request. It is worth noting that sometimes the decision to wind or not to wind is a decision having to do with ability. Think of the antenna and everything connected to the ground terminal of the KAT100 -- including the counterpoise -- as an off-center fed antenna. When you removed the counterpoise, you moved the feedpoint. This changed the impedance seen by the KAT100 ... 73, Vic, K2VCO Thanks Vic, I get it now: the method that I am using is valid only when the antenna is 1/4 wl or less. Since my EFW is 86 feet, it would only be useful trying this comparison on topband where a 1/4 wl is roughly 125 ft. It was suggested off list that my best bet overall is to employ the use of a field strength meter. Re: [Elecraft] winding toroids
You do not want to pull the wire too tight when winding toroids...Copper wire is malleable and will stretch, possibly separating it from the enamel and allowing the enamel to flake off... Jerry, wa2dkg --- In the thousands upon thousands of toroids that I have hand wound while supplying toroid sets to Elecraft builders, I have never personally had this problem. I have had the wire break on the occasion while trying to snug up a toroids lead using too much force for the gauge of wire with which I am working [try working with KSB2 toroids immediately after winding toroids for the KAT100 QRO tuner- hi!], but I have never had enamel flake off despite the fact that I sometimes exert enough hand force to break cores, particularly those using the heavier guage wire. I think that it is important to realize, however, that these toroids do not have to be wound with their windings absolutely flat against their toroidal cores. Hand snug is plenty good for our HF applications and is all that is expected of the builder. As the Toroid Guy, I am supplying a professional service and therefore strive to provide toroids that are as perfect as possible in every way. Less than perfect toroids in terms of appearance- so long as the stripping and tinning is performed competently so as to assure good electrical connectivity when they are soldered to the PCB- will certainly suffice toward helping to get those kits on the air. Re: [Elecraft] Muting the K2
Hi, Bob- I don't know if this applies to your situation, or if it is the best available scheme really, but I use my K2 for RX when I am operating with my Johnson Ranger TX. The best way I have found to do this is to key both in parallel, the K2 in TEST mode so that it mutes RX in synch with my keying. This allows me to have side tone and QSK abilities, along with superb K2 RX [using an antenna separate from the one on which the Ranger is transmitting, of course]. Since the Ranger puts considerably more voltage across the key than does the K2, I key the K2 directly and use a relay between my bug and the Ranger. Re: [Elecraft] KAT 100-1 vs KAT 100-2
Hi, Jim- Th reason for the larger enclosure is that a lot of ops prefer to remote the KPA100 together with the KAT100-2. This of course requires the larger area afforded by an EC2 external enclosure which can be purchased separately. The KAT100-2 kit slips inside the lower part of the EC2 enclosure and includes front and back panels. The KPA100 fits in the upper portion, its heatsink making up the top panel of the enclosure, just as it does when it is integrated into the K2. The self-contained KAT100-1 comes with standard feet, but a bail can be ordered. I use this bail on my KAT100-1. Since the K2 is placed directly atop the KAT100-1, it makes the bail of the K2 superfluous. If you are at all interested in remoting the KPA100, excellent info in this regard can be found at: http://www.fidalgo.net/~wa7gxd/k2kpa100.html 73, Mychael AA3WF K2#1025 - ... Re: [Elecraft] KX1 Random Wire Antenna recommendations
Hi! In my experience, the counterpoise can be a tricky thing. Keep in mind that minor changes in ground current can lead to substantial swings in antenna impedance. That translates directly into changes in SWR. For instance, I use an MFJ Artificial ground to tune a counterpoise for my 85' EFW. There are some bands that I simply cannot match with a low SWR if I do not have my counterpoise adjusted to see maximum current. On other bands the peak is rather broad and it isn't as important. Using end fed wire radiators can be VERY effective, but they tend to take more effort for multi-band operation if you care about keeping the ground current optimal for maximum efficiency. It is not necessary to use an AG for series capacitance and inductance if you are willing to either use a separate wire per band or adjust the length of your counterpoise by either trimming it or folding it back onto itself. The AG is, of course, more convenient and allows one to use the same 'poise for more than one band- within reason (I use a separate 'poise for top band and 80 meter ops). To get the length right (the point at which the 'poise sees maximum current) you will need some method of monitoring the current. My MFJ AG has a built-in meter for this. You can also use a small light bulb at the rig as an indicator and tune for max brightness. Of course, what you are theoretically going for is a counterpoise of 1/4 wl, but it is not as exact as this and some form of adjustment is helpful. QSYing within a band can sometimes require a slight adjustment in ground current as well if the antenna exhibits a high Q. For antics of the pedestrian mobile sort, I would probably use the cut-and-try method to get the right counterpoise length per band if the SWR was giving me trouble. One other thing worth noting is that I have found with my KAT2 and KAT100 auto-tuners that small amounts of either capacitance or inductance added in series between rig and antenna can work wonders in helping the tuner find the right L/C combination on problematic bands. I have a 335 pF air variable with banana jacks soldered onto frame and stator that I use for this, as well as a goofy looking toroid wound on a T94-2 core that is tapped at regular intervals with more banana jacks. 73, Mychael AA3WF K2 #1025 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Like MFJ's 931 Artificial Ground ?
Hi, Bill- Unless I am mistaken, there is supposedly a schematic available for the MFJ-931 in Devoldere's Antenna and Techniques for Low-Band DXing. I have the 931 and use if with my EFW, both in the shack as well as while portable. It works well for me, plus one cannot have too many gadgets containing wiggly meters hanging around- hi. If you cannot get a copy of the schematic, let me know off list and I'll open up my unit and trace something out for you. As I recall, it is a simple variable L/C network whose output passes through a toroidal transformer that provides current info to the front panel meter. You could of course dispense with the meter and use a lil light bulb to help tune for maximum current. 73, Mychael/AA3WF K2#1025 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
