The manual says set SPKRS on 2 if using 2 external speakers. I'm using
 the internal speaker.

SPKRS=2 is either or both. See page 20 of the manual.

Re: [Elecraft] K3/SV/SDR-IQ/VSPE

2010-11-29 Thread N1JM

On my laptop I use a USB to serial adapter for the radio. On my desktop I use
a serial port. I happened to try the USB-serial adapter on my desktop for
the radio and I got a BSOD. Sounds like I should try a different USB-serial
adapter for the radio. I currently use a Keyspan USA19HS that normally works
super.

Thanks,

advisable to use a motherboard or PCI board serial port if possible. For
USB adapters, my experience and that of my users seems to point to a
preference for adapters with FTDI chipsets. Also, many users have
reported good success with Digi Edgeport adapters, which can be found

Re: [Elecraft] Re: OT: QST's review of the Yae su FTDX5000MP

One of my pet peeves of the K3 is the notch is not within the agc loop and
yes I know it's not good for IMD but so what. It's not engaged all the time.
The other is excessive birdies which the 5000 does not hardly have any.

I read and enjoyed the review.  It looks like a very good product, and
 will
no doubt sell well - as it should.

For me the only advantage it would have over my K3/P3 is the integrated
 200
W capability and integrated power supply with 12V power - both nice
features.  But I wouldn't consider buying one, the deal breakers being:
size/weight, audible QSK relay and single color panadapter w/o waterfall.
Not to mention the more intangibles, such as ease of firmware updates and
ability to do 80% of the servicing myself.  Close, but no cigar  ;)

[Elecraft] P3 #672

2010-10-20 Thread N1JM

While I was away for about 3 weeks my P3 arrived. I put it together last
night. So far so good. I have my SDR-IQ/SV hooked to the IF out.
For my type of operation, probably the big differences are no PC required
and the markers. Otherwise I like the bigger screen on the PC of the SDR. I
suppose at the moment it's a flip of the coin as to which one I like better.
Time will tell as I use the P3.

Go to configuration-port/logging program and down in the lower right you will
see enable K3 with a comport to select. After that just click on the
frequency in the DX window. It changes only frequency not mode.

You can also send the spots to other loggers like N1MM. There's also

As in the past, I suppose this convrsation could go on, but my setup is very
simple- 2 cables: data out from the radio the line in on the PC and fsk out
from a PC comport(simple transistor keyer inside serial cable housing) to
radio fsk in. No audio levels to adjust, no vox to adjust. But as they say
DSFDF. Yes, and if the FSK wave shape could be cleaner( and each tone output
could be equal as I have asked Elecraft in the past and should be on their
list of to dos).

Part of the problem is that a DSP radio needs to have the notch after

being over driven.  If the notch is placed BEFORE the AGC detector
the notch will cause the interfering signal to INCREASE at the input
 of the ADC.

Yes, it would be nice for the notch to allow the receiver to return
to normal gain when the interfering signal is removed but that would
merely cause the HAGC to come into play.

The metering is switched over to the sub-rx when in b SET mode.
However, as soon at you go into CONFIG the s-meter reverts to the
main rx making callibration impossible. This can be checked by
rotating the main rx rf gain counter clockwise, the s-meter reading

Unless, that is, I'm doing something terribly wrong.

I never bother with the sub-rx s-meter in normal operation but the

[Elecraft] K3 Birdies

2009-08-18 Thread John N1JM

I know this has been discussed quite a bit before but I'm a little
disappointed in the amount of birdies within the ham bands. Seems like
lately I have found more than earlier. I have 3 on 40 meters that are a
least S5 that I don't think were there before and am sure they are generated
within the radio. I know the firmware can be set to get around some of
these. Maybe I need to go in and tighten down screws again. I suppose this
is a characteristic of down conversion ham band only type radios to some
degree. The off-shore manufactured upconverted style radios don't seem to
have this problem. I've never had a birdie within the ham bands on a higher
end general coverage upconversion style radio that I have ever owned and I
have owned a few from I-K-Y.

Sorry for the comments but I just had to vent :-).

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noise Reduction

2009-04-27 Thread John N1JM

I don't think I have ever had or used a radio where the NR was terrific.
Consequently I hardly ever use NR. Even after all the agc adjustments, etc.
with the K3, my TS480 is about the same. YMMV of course.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio

2009-04-05 Thread John N1JM

I guess I would have to listen to another K3, but the audio is no better than
my TS480 with internal speaker.

If I may throw my two pennies into the discussion -
I use medium quality amplified speakers on my K3, and with the speaker
amplifier turned up and the K3 connected to a dummy load, I hear no
evidence of any hissy receiver noise - very quiet.
My conclusion from that is the hissy sound is not from the K3 internal
noise.
BTW, the internal speaker is difficult for me to listen to, but that is
the fault of the speaker and not the K3 audio.

When I connect an antenna, I hear sounds that are directly related to
the DSP bandwidth I have dialed in (only the 2.7 kHz filter in this K3),
and also related to the AGC parameters that I have selected.. Sometimes
the band noise is objectionable, but what I am saying is that is band
noise and not K3 noise.

There was a change to the AGC in firmware MCU release 3.03 that in
crowded band conditions could be interpreted as hiss or muddiness,
and I would encourage those who are hearing hissy audio to try an
upgrade to the latest beta level firmware.

We could hear it using the built-in speaker as well as on a Heil Pro Set

 I think so too.
The high hiss level is the thing I like least about my K3 :-(

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Firmware upgrade harder than construction...Help

2009-04-04 Thread John N1JM

I assume you have no regular serial port. Have you tried the adapter with your
K3 and a control/logging program like HRD? Some usb to serial adapters are
quirky.

John N1JM

After 10 months I decided to upgrade my firmware from the original 2.16
since I just got the KXV3 and KRX3...Frustration!
Have a USB 2.0 to RS232 Serial adapter and have tried it in all my USB
plugs and in Com ports 1, 2, and 4 which are shown as choices on the K3
Utility. The computer tells me my driver is correct, I've matched
9600 baud with the K3 and all I ever get is a K3 not responding on Com
Ports 1 and 2, and Another app connected to Com port 4. I'd just
order the CD, but that would not solve my communication from the
computer to the K3. What should I try next?

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Assembly

2009-04-04 Thread John N1JM

Thanks. I missed that on the errata sheet. Although it's not to clear how to
set them up. You must enter a frequency in each 0-9 before it becomes active.

73,
John N1JM

Yeah, band buttons would be nice if the panel were larger.
But there is a good work-around that doesn't require a
computer. If you're new here, you may have missed it. Just
use quick-recall memories 0-9. This results in two taps
instead of one (MV, n) but it sets you up with all
variables the way you want them.

All that's necessary is to set MEM 0-9 to Band Sel in
the configuration menu. After that, M-V followed by 1
through 0 will recall the last used frequency/mode on each
band 160 - 6 (1 = 1.8, 2 = 3.5, 3 = 7, 4 = 10, 5 = 14,
6 = 18.1, 7 = 21, 8 = 24.9, 9 = 28 and 0 - 50 MHz).

 I use this mnemonic: Memory 0=160, 1=10, 2=20, 3=30, 4=40,
 5=15, 6=60, 7=17, 8=80, 9=12. (That last one isn't really
mnemonic.) Some folks go in frequency sequence. Take the time
to set up exactly what you want in both VFOs on each band. I
put my favorite CW freq in VFO A, my favorite SSB freq in VFO
B and set up AGC and DSP parameters just the way I (usually)
like them. It's a breeze once you get it set up.

[Elecraft] K3 Assembly

2009-04-03 Thread John N1JM

After 2 months sitting on the bench and 2 weeks of on and off assembly, I
finally have my K3/KPA3/KRX3, etc., up and running. I was a little
apprehensive about lowering the sub receiver into the radio with all the RF
cables in the way and difficulty in seeing the sub-in and sub-out connectors,
but it went in relatively smoothly. So far it is a terrific radio. My only
quibble is that I wish it had band buttons( and yes, I know, there is software
for that and I use HRD) and band stacking registers. I just don't like a radio
tied to a Mac(or PC) all the time, otherwise I might have a Flex :-). But it

I had the exact same experience - reversed several steps to see if I had
done something wrong - went back together and same thing occured. It is a
tight fit - just loosen several of the 2D screws and give it just a bit of a
slight nudge and SLOWLY tighten screws, each a bit at a time, unitl all are
tight again - works fine and no smoke!! ( Whew!! ) hihi... now if I can
just figure out how to adjust the oscillator without spending three weeks
turning the VFO to get to the frequency posting a query on that in just
 a minute...

Probably not a big deal, but in putting together my kit(after 2 months

 finally
getting that accomplished, the holes at the bottom corners of the front
panel didn't quite line up with the threaded holes in the 2D blocks . The
2D blocks are oriented correctly. I had to push against the panel to make
the holes line up. Loosening the 2D blocks
didn't help and the connectors were seated together with no gaps and
inserted properly. Anyway, as I said no big deal, but was concerned because

everything prior went together so smoothly and I might have put something
together wrong but double checked all my work to make sure I hadn't missed
something. Resistance checks were ok and now I am at the point of applying
power to test for smoke. This is a fun project.

Subject: [Elecraft] Your Opinion: The realities of QRP vs. QRO

A few years back in our little farming community, there was a fellow
 whose name was Francis.
 Francis was an avid hunter.
At this time, the rumor went around the community that
Francis had been fined for deer jacking.
Out of his truck one night, with a spot light, he took a shot at a
plastic deer planted by game wardens.
Soon it became a joke...Sir Francis the deer slayer.

Something within me seemed to understand Francis' point of view.
He was a pragmatist... He had little interest in the thrill of the hunt.
He was focused on the efficiency of the catch.

Although QRO is far from illegal, it does seem to be somewhat more
focused on the efficiency of the catch than the thrill of the hunt.
So there is a certain un-romantic reality to QRO vs. QRP.

I'm wondering, what percentage of contacts you've made QRO, that you
would estimate as not attainable QRP.

I hope I didn't break the list rules getting off-topic with the story
