Re: [Elecraft] K3/SV/SDR-IQ/VSPE
On my laptop I use a USB to serial adapter for the radio. On my desktop I use a serial port. I happened to try the USB-serial adapter on my desktop for the radio and I got a BSOD. Sounds like I should try a different USB-serial adapter for the radio. I currently use a Keyspan USA19HS that normally works super. Thanks, John N1JM N8LP wrote: I can't speak to SV issues, but almost all issues related to LP-Bridge can be traced to a USB-to-serial adapter problem, either with the adapter, a self powered USB hub or a driver problem. It is always advisable to use a motherboard or PCI board serial port if possible. For USB adapters, my experience and that of my users seems to point to a preference for adapters with FTDI chipsets. Also, many users have reported good success with Digi Edgeport adapters, which can be found cheaply on eBay. For me the only advantage it would have over my K3/P3 is the integrated 200 W capability and integrated power supply with 12V power - both nice features. But I wouldn't consider buying one, the deal breakers being: size/weight, audible QSK relay and single color panadapter w/o waterfall. [Elecraft] K2/K3 Proset
I bought a K2 Proset some time ago that was converted to an HC-5 element. I have the original iC element. My question is , is there a series resistor involved with pin 1 or is that kind of built into the K3 when I turn bias on? I'm thinking of converting it back to the original. [Elecraft] K3 Birdies
I know this has been discussed quite a bit before but I'm a little disappointed in the amount of birdies within the ham bands. Seems like lately I have found more than earlier. I have 3 on 40 meters that are a least S5 that I don't think were there before and am sure they are generated within the radio. I know the firmware can be set to get around some of these. Maybe I need to go in and tighten down screws again. I suppose this is a characteristic of down conversion ham band only type radios to some degree. The off-shore manufactured upconverted style radios don't seem to have this problem. I've never had a birdie within the ham bands on a higher end general coverage upconversion style radio that I have ever owned and I have owned a few from I-K-Y. Re: [Elecraft] K3 audio
I guess I would have to listen to another K3, but the audio is no better than my TS480 with internal speaker. If I may throw my two pennies into the discussion - I use medium quality amplified speakers on my K3, and with the speaker amplifier turned up and the K3 connected to a dummy load, I hear no evidence of any hissy receiver noise - very quiet. My conclusion from that is the hissy sound is not from the K3 internal noise. BTW, the internal speaker is difficult for me to listen to, but that is the fault of the speaker and not the K3 audio. When I connect an antenna, I hear sounds that are directly related to the DSP bandwidth I have dialed in (only the 2.7 kHz filter in this K3), and also related to the AGC parameters that I have selected.. Sometimes the band noise is objectionable, but what I am saying is that is band noise and not K3 noise. There was a change to the AGC in firmware MCU release 3.03 that in crowded band conditions could be interpreted as hiss or muddiness, and I would encourage those who are hearing hissy audio to try an upgrade to the latest beta level firmware. 73, Don W3FPR Ralph Parker wrote: ...the K3's audio was hissy and sharp and not nice and smooth. Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 Assembly
Thanks. I missed that on the errata sheet. Although it's not to clear how to set them up. You must enter a frequency in each 0-9 before it becomes active. 73, John N1JM Yeah, band buttons would be nice if the panel were larger. But there is a good work-around that doesn't require a computer. If you're new here, you may have missed it. Just use quick-recall memories 0-9. This results in two taps instead of one (MV, n) but it sets you up with all variables the way you want them. All that's necessary is to set MEM 0-9 to Band Sel in the configuration menu. After that, M-V followed by 1 through 0 will recall the last used frequency/mode on each band 160 - 6 (1 = 1.8, 2 = 3.5, 3 = 7, 4 = 10, 5 = 14, 6 = 18.1, 7 = 21, 8 = 24.9, 9 = 28 and 0 - 50 MHz). 73, ...
