I'd like to know a little more about the K144XV receive performance. The Noise Figure is given as "<2 dB", while the external XV144 has a NF "typically 0.8 dB". This seems like a significant difference. The XV144 also has a high dynamic range front end - how does the K144XV compare? Re: [Elecraft] Switching supplies and the K3
This discussion gives me the opportunity to correct an opinion that I earlier posted on this list. Some long time ago I said I didn't much like the Watson W25-XM switched supply because of RF noises which always contrive to arrive on frequency at the worst possible moment. I advised someone on this list to think twice before purchasing a Watson switched supply. However I now have the tiny Watson Power Mite NF, a surprising and very thoughtful birthday gift from my wife. It is much quieter in RF emissions and anyway has a front panel control to shift the switching frequency in case hash does arrive on the operating frequency at a bad moment. The variable-speed fan is moderately quiet too. This supply powers the K3 (or K2) just fine. I would prefer to have a big linear PSU, of course, but my present operating conditions are much better served by this small and very light switcher. 73 Neill F5VLD / G4HLX K2/100 #2425 K3/100 #289 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] KUSB to Serial
If I may return to the original topic: Ken asked about experience of connecting a K3 via a USB port to Vista. My experience is wholly positive. I picked up a standard USB-to-serial "adaptor" at my local supermarket while doing my grocery shopping. It cost under 25 euros. Plugged it into my laptop running Vista, it automatically downloaded the driver from the MS Windows Update site and works perfectly with the K3. It does seem to use the Prolific chip, judging by messages I saw as the driver was installing. 73 Neill F5VLD / G4HLX K2 #2425 K3 #289 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shipping Status Update on Web Site
Don't get too excited. I have still heard nothing from my 7th May (with deposit) order. Nothing heard yet re mine ordered May 11 with deposit, but hoping I'll hear something soon. Yesterday David G4DMP was kind enough to let me play with his K3 #186, that he received (kit) last week. It has increased my enthusiasm! 73 all, Geoff G3UCK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Question for UK members (PSU and Amp)

This looks a great size for use with my K2 on my travels, I just wonder if anyone has used one with the K2 and if they have any comments (i.e. any noise of RF problems)?? I would be cautious about the Watson PSU. I have the older, slightly larger 25A version, W-25XM, and it generates a lot of RF signals over a wide frequency range. Maybe they've improved it in the new model, but I would advise checking it. 73 Neill G4HLX / F5VLD K2/100 #2425 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Just to balance the horror stories: I have had a number (~7) of shipments to the UK from Elecraft over the years and only once was charged anything other than 17.5% VAT (plus the outrageous ParcelForce fee to collect it, of course). On that occasion, I contacted Customs by e-mail, they asked me to send them the sticker from the package, and I got a refund of the duty within a month. [Elecraft] Re: knob
Looks like it's time to repeat my annual post on this topic A very acceptable solution, for those with no local broccoli supply, is to obtain from your local sports store a rubber sleeve intended to go on a tennis racket handle. Cut a short section of this and it fits over the K2 knob perfectly. It even has a grip pattern moulded into it. I didn't originate this idea, it came from Geoff G3XGC. And, by the way, to Martin who wrote: Is the term "knob" something naughty? yes, in British schoolboy language, it is.
