Re: [Elecraft] just 500W ?
Interesting that little has been said about the ANTENNA. Power is only part of the equation, and I suspect that there is more dB gain from upgrading your antenna than upgrading your amplifier from 100 to 500 or 500 to 1500 watts. I've never operated with more than 600 watts power output, but I sure noticed the improvement when I switched from a HF6V to a TH-11. That station improvement took me from 305 confirmed to No. 1 Honor Roll. Yes, 1500 watts may get you there faster, but 500 watts is all you really need to do the job. Re: [Elecraft] Yaesu versus Elecraft Service
Yaesu is selling disposable radios. I called about sending in my eight year old FT-100D for repair and was told they no longer support the FT-100. Why would anyone spend 12K on a Yaesu radio that will be obsolete in less than eight years? My experience with Elecraft service, on the other hand, has been stellar. I even called and was told that, O yes the purported tech I talked to said that the radio was fixed right. Well, when I got it back, all they did was replace the finals. This is the same policy used by auto dealers, who insert a customer service manager between a customer and mechanic, or computer manufacturers whose support personnel answer technical questions by reading from a prepared script. In my case, I had questions about the first mixer stage in my FT-2000D, which I suspected had failed. I had traced the signal path to the mixer with an oscilloscope, but wasn't sure how to interpret the output signal. I couldn't tell from the circuit diagram how much bias current the mixer FETs were supposed to draw, what the conversion loss from the mixer was (after taking into account losses and turns ratios of the coupling transformers), whether this was a common failure mode in the radio and what the likely cause was, and whether there were any useful pointers in replacing the tiny surface mount mixer IC. Unable to get anwers, I didn't want to take a chance plunging ahead with the repair myself, so I ended up sending the radio back to Yaesu. The repair bill came to $187 plus another $90 round trip shipping. Incidentally, the first mixer is nothing special; it is a garden variety IC that costs about $4. By coincidence, I also had a failure in my Elecraft K3, which had suddenly stopped transmitting during a recent 6m contest. I called Elecraft and was immediately put through to a service technician. I explained my problem and he asked me a few questions about my electronics background and what sort of test equipment I had on my workbench. He decided that I had enough enough experience to fix the problem myself, and we agreed that I would call him back after putting my K3 on my test bench and removing the covers. Later that day, I called him back and, together, we traced the signal path through the transmitter. I had the phone in one hand and a scope probe in the other. In a matter of 20 minutes, we determined that the push-pull FETs in the driver stage had shorted. He mailed me replacement FETs which came in three days. Ten minutes after opening the package, my K3 was back on the air. I have had similar experiences repairing a Ten-Tec Orion transceiver and SteppIR 4 el yagi. As long as the dynamic response of the meter is independent of voltage level, the measurement should be accurate. Also, have you taken into account any internal resistance of the Simpson? As I recall that was a 20,000 ohms per volt (a 50 uA movement) meter - Great at the time, but worthless today for anything other than house/auto wiring - which also implies that there is a shunt dropping the meter movement down from 50 to 60 ( which model has a range of 60??? [Elecraft] Low Power RTTY Output
When I connect my Hal DXP38 AF Out to the K3 Line In, I get a maximum of 20 watts RF output, even when the TX Level pot on the DXP38 is set for maximum output, MIC SEL is set to Line In, PWR is set to 100 watts, and Line is set to 60 (max setting available). I see no ALC bars. When I connect the DXP38 AF Out to the rear mic jack, I get 100 watts RF output and 6 ALC bars with MIC SEL set for rP.L, PWR set for 100 watts, and the mic gain set to 15. Apparently the K3 Line In is designed to support sound card digital inputs, so if you're using an external box for AFSK RTTY, you may have to use the rear mic input to get full RF power output. I didn't try the front mic input, but presumably it would be the same as the rear mic input. I reported the low power problem using Line In for RTTY to Wayne a couple of weeks ago, but I didn't get a response. I'm curious about why there is such a difference between the maximum achievable RF output on RTTY when using the line input (max line gain of 60 for 20 watts RF and no ALC indication) vs. the rear mic input (mic gain at 15 for 100 watts RF and 6 bars of ALC). The output level from the DXP38 is the same to both ports, so obviously, the K3 Line In has a much lower maximum level than the Mic In. Is this something that can be addressed in a software upgrade? Radio weight is relative (isn't everything?). I've owned two radios in 27 years of ham radio, the FT-707 (14.3 lb. and considered tiny in its day) and the FT-100 (6.6 lb. and very tiny). The former was a knob radio, the latter a push-button radio. I quickly learned to use just enough force to activate a menu button (tap or press hold momentarily) without moving my 6.6 lb. radio. Surely anyone brilliant enough to purchase the K3 (8 lb. or more, depending upon configuration) should be adaptable enough to operate the radio without moving it all over the bench. Most rigs today put out between 100-200 watts, regardless of price. DX'ing and contesting success seems to me to be related to your amplifier and your antennas, not your radio. The radio only comes into play on the low bands, where being able to hear the weak ones through the noise becomes important. All this begs the question, Who is a 'big gun'? Is it someone with a 5 figure radio, someone who breaks all the pile-ups with one call, someone who wins all of the contests, someone who is on top of the Honor Roll and has 5BWAZ, or someone who has 160 acres of antenna farm with full wavelength beverages every 22.5 degrees? Maybe it's all of the above, but I doubt it. I'm a little pistol by most definitions, but I'm #1 Honor Roll, have 2507 band-entities toward the Challenge, and hold the WPX Award of Excellence endorsed for 160, 30, 17, 12, and digital modes. I lack 8 entities on 160 for 9BDXCC, lack 6 zones for 5BWAZ. I've been DX'ing since 1981, and I use an FT-100 (FT-707 before that), 600 watts of amplifier power, a TH-11 at 48 ft. (since 1996, a HF6V before that), a side mounted 5 element yagi on 6 meters, and a HF2V with 30 meter coil. I have a flag, mag loop, and low 80 meter dipole to help me hear better on 160. My entire antenna farm is crammed into a back yard in town that measures 60x70 ft. So why did I order a K3? Because I can't hear the DX very well on 80 and 160, and I'm betting that the K3 will enable me to improve my low band Challenge score and finish 5BWAZ from my sub-optimal location. Besides, I'm retiring, and it's time for my dream radio. Maybe 'big gun' is more about what you do than what you have, but I'm really looking forward to my K3. RE: [Elecraft] k3 Big Gun
Then 'big gun' is directly related to your net worth, rather than your ability or accomplishments. According to your definition, you can spend your way to 'big gun' status, whether you ever use any of that 'setup' or not. RE: [Elecraft] OT - End of the line for XP
I had the same experience following a mother board failure, so Microsoft isn't all evil. When and if you try to load it on a forth, the activation process will fail and tell you to call customer service. I had a motherboard fail and was already on #3. I called customer service and told them that the old machine was dead and the rep actually reset me to zero (!) so after loading a new machine I have two left. I was prepared for a battle but I was boviously quite surprised. Either Microsoft is trying to work with people who play by the rules (and don't steal software) or I was just lucky and got the right rep. In any event, you have nothing but your time to lose by trying to load another machine and also to ask for help if you need it. There was a huge amount of angst over what problems Xp might cause. Drivers were near the top of the list of concerns. That was a long time ago in the lifespan of most technology. And Xp has a number of years of Microsoft support ahead of it on current systems, such as the one I'm using now. Even after that, it'll live on. I've got one machine still running Windows Me, and it runs quite nicely (for a machine with a 500 MHz Pentium III and a few hundred k of RAM ). I know others still running various versions of DOS! Fortunately new software does not immediately displace everything else, except in the minds of those hardy folks who choose to be early adopters. Their experiences work out the bugs for the rest of us who merely want a reliable tool to use. I'm happy to be an early adopter of new communications technology. It's what interests me. I'll leave the software for those who enjoy doing that. Ron AC7AC ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. RE: [Elecraft] Dayton Orders - We're up next
Thanks for the shipping update, Dick. It's nice to see Dayton orders are being filled. Eric implied that once Dayton orders were shipped, they would fly through the summer orders pretty quickly. Please keep posting shipping dates so that I can estimate when my September order is likely to arrive. I added to my order and heard back from Lisa almost immediately that Saturday evening(EST)...
