Joe,

A switch is a switch, is a switch. They all should be electrically the
same - either open or closed.
The things to look for are physical characteristics that fit your
opeation - amount of pressure to make contact, the spring tension to
restore it to an on\pen switch position, and other related parameters.

There is nothing sacred about either metal or plastic, it is all about
effectiveness of the switch action.

Following on the magnifier thread.

I settled for a cheap-o head magnifier sometime back when I had some sudden
need. It was OK, but I still wanted better.

I just did some searches for the Donegan Optical Optivisor (mentioned in the
recent threads) and found their web site has a dealer locator. It did miss
some local sources I had found elsewhere in searches (such as a jewelry
working supplier quite conveniently near my office.. I hope to get there in
a few days and check them out re. the various magnifier levels.. I think you
can get interchangable lenses). This was suggestec by a school of arts
advisory for their incoming jewelry arts summer students.

Once source was a supplier for eradication of head lice... So you never
know where!

Also, model train kit/building suppliers... I found one on the US/Canada
border that serves Canada and USA from B.C. and Washington state.

Your info for what you like. Prices varied greatly... one go-to place for
tools I found was about 30 dollars more than the average I have seen.

I will be getting one for some SMD work and general work. Now that I have a
Wal-Mart griddle and embossing tool for 'frying' and heating up SMD
boards/components and some solder paste on the way along with a small
Hendricks kit to try out the SMD working process!

Re: [Elecraft] just 500W ?

2011-01-25 Thread Nelson Moyer
Interesting that little has been said about the ANTENNA. Power is only part
of the equation, and I suspect that there is more dB gain from upgrading
your antenna than upgrading your amplifier from 100 to 500 or 500 to 1500
watts. I've never operated with more than 600 watts power output, but I sure
noticed the improvement when I switched from a HF6V to a TH-11. That station
improvement took me from 305 confirmed to No. 1 Honor Roll. Yes, 1500 watts
may get you there faster, but 500 watts is all you really need to do the
job.

oscilating with a xtal on 7005 and that thing made barely 2W and with a
dipole I worked in less than a year more than 100 countries in CW from my CO
land BUT those were years where the bands were not so crowded and they were
not so noisy and the solar cycles were great BUT today with the hundred
thousand stations filling the bands, the high band noise, the terrible
propagation,QRP working is not the same, besides the courtesy of those old
times its gone forever, bands are plagued by guys using full legal power OR
MORE who has no respect for anybody and the actual rules is have power or
not make a contact, most of the times unless you have a great beam antenna on
40M you won't do much with a QRP,you need to have those 500W from your amp
or more. Its tough today to survive in the bands jungle sorrounded by lions
who want to smash your poor signal and you only have a razor blade to

The shirt I wear sometimes in the hamfests says up front : Life is
 too short for QRP

In stark contrast, the first rig I built, when I was 13, was a
200-milliwatt-output crystal oscillator that used half a dozen parts with
their leads twisted together. No PCB, no solder, no box. It was ugly. But it
worked.

I connected a hand key and a battery in series, paid out a roll of guy wire
and tossed it on the roof, then started listening around the rig's 40-m
frequency with my Hallicrafters SX101. A guy up in Los Angeles was calling
CQ, and when he came back to me, I nearly fell off my chair. 200 miles on
200 mW, with an unmatched wire laying on the roof and a 9-V battery!

A few months later someone gave me an HT37 transmitter (100 W). First thing
I did was turn the drive down to nearly zero, measured my output at 200 mW,
and worked New York (2500 miles) on 20 m.

Life's not too short for *that* :)

OTOH, I'm quite proud of our engineering staff's achievement with the
KPA500.

Jim,

All the more reason to buy American products! I owned a couple of Yaseu HF

rigs in the past and I was more than dis-pleased with their service dept.
In one instance, the SWR protection circuit went out in my 1000D; sent it
back telling them what the problem was (or what caused the final transistors

to burn out). I even called and was told that, O yes the purported tech
I talked to said that the radio was fixed right. Well, when I got it back,
all they did was replace the finals.

As far as I am concerned, any ham who buys a Yaesu or Icom HF radio is a
fool and uninformed. Both the K3 and O2 will run circles around any of the
other rigs (maybe with the exception of the SDR radios).

And when you talk about service, both Ten Tec and Elecraft are top notch.
You are so right when you say you get to talk to a tech, not some idiot that

is a go between and not familiar with the radio.

That is my 2 cents worth.

but at least it is not a big investment if it goes up in smoke.

 Subject: Update: Yaesu Service

Two weeks ago I posted a note here about Yaesu's policy of not allowing
customers to speak to service technicians, instead referring inquiries to
customer support personnel who were unfamiliar with the inner workings of
Yaesu products. This is the same policy used by auto dealers, who insert a
customer service manager between a customer and mechanic, or computer
manufacturers whose support personnel answer technical questions by
 reading
 from a prepared script.

In my case, I had questions about the first mixer stage in my FT-2000D,
which I suspected had failed. I had traced the signal path to the mixer
 with
an oscilloscope, but wasn't sure how to interpret the output signal. I
couldn't tell from the circuit diagram how much bias current the mixer
 FETs
were supposed to draw, what the conversion loss from the mixer was (after
taking into account losses and turns ratios of the coupling transformers),
whether this was a common failure mode in the radio and what the likely
cause was, and whether there were any useful pointers in replacing the
 tiny
 surface mount mixer IC.

Unable to get anwers, I didn't want to take a chance plunging ahead with
 the
repair myself, so I ended up sending the radio back to Yaesu. The repair
bill came to $187 plus another $90 round trip shipping. Incidentally, the
first mixer is nothing special; it is a garden variety IC that costs about
 $4.

By coincidence, I also had a failure in my Elecraft K3, which had suddenly
stopped transmitting during a recent 6m contest. I called Elecraft and was
immediately put through to a service technician. I explained my problem
 and
he asked me a few questions about my electronics background and what sort
 of
test equipment I had on my workbench. He decided that I had enough enough
experience to fix the problem myself, and we agreed that I would call him
back after putting my K3 on my test bench and removing the covers.

Later that day, I called him back and, together, we traced the signal path
through the transmitter. I had the phone in one hand and a scope probe in
the other. In a matter of 20 minutes, we determined that the push-pull
 FETs
in the driver stage had shorted. He mailed me replacement FETs which came
 in
three days. Ten minutes after opening the package, my K3 was back on the
 air.

I have had similar experiences repairing a Ten-Tec Orion transceiver and
SteppIR 4 el yagi. In each case, the service technicians were happy to
 talk
to me and, with their guidance, repairs were quick and straightforward.

Here's my point. Ham radio is a technical hobby. It begin a century ago,
when all stations were homebrewed by their owners. Today, of course, there

It shouldn't matter. I was not trying to measure the voltage, rather
the RATIO of the voltage before and after the capacitor discharge. As
long as the dynamic response of the meter is independent of voltage
level, the measurement should be accurate.

Also, have you taken into account any internal resistance of the
Simpson? As I recall that was a 20,000 ohms per volt (a 50 uA
movement) meter - Great at the time, but worthless today for anything
other than house/auto wiring - which also implies that there is a
shunt dropping the meter movement down from 50 to 60 ( which model
has a range of 60??? I have seen ones with 50 and 100 uA but not 60)
and thus there is resistance added to your test circuit. These small
errors are acting like a furculum and greatly skewing your results.

As I said, I don't think it matters. Besides, even if the measurement
were off by a factor of two it wouldn't affect the qualitative result.
The measured resistance was several orders of magnitude too high.

[Elecraft] Low Power RTTY Output

2008-11-24 Thread Nelson Moyer
When I connect my Hal DXP38 AF Out to the K3 Line In, I get a maximum of 20
watts RF output, even when the TX Level pot on the DXP38 is set for maximum
output, MIC SEL is set to Line In, PWR is set to 100 watts, and Line is set
to 60 (max setting available). I see no ALC bars.

When I connect the DXP38 AF Out to the rear mic jack, I get 100 watts RF
output and 6 ALC bars with MIC SEL set for rP.L, PWR set for 100 watts, and
the mic gain set to 15.

Apparently the K3 Line In is designed to support sound card digital inputs,
so if you're using an external box for AFSK RTTY, you may have to use the
rear mic input to get full RF power output. I didn't try the front mic
input, but presumably it would be the same as the rear mic input.

I reported the low power problem using Line In for RTTY to Wayne a couple of
weeks ago, but I didn't get a response. I'm curious about why there is such
a difference between the maximum achievable RF output on RTTY when using the
line input (max line gain of 60 for 20 watts RF and no ALC indication) vs.
the rear mic input (mic gain at 15 for 100 watts RF and 6 bars of ALC). The
output level from the DXP38 is the same to both ports, so obviously, the K3
Line In has a much lower maximum level than the Mic In. Is this something
that can be addressed in a software upgrade?

I asked the Elecraft service technician this question during a
troubleshooting session on the phone last week, and he told me the built-in

experience on 160 meters with a preamp with 17 dB gain suggests that 10 dB
is about right, because I hear approximately one S unit difference between
the two preamps. I didn't ask which frequencies it was optimized for, e.g.

less than the price of just one lamp from Alpha, including shipping! You're
right - they're ridiculously overpriced at Alpha. Be careful if you have to
remove the green and amber rubber boots from the old bulbs. They get brittle
with heat and split easily. I lucked out and was able to reuse all four of

PLEASE REPLY OFF-REFLECTOR...!!

I'm undertaking a project to replace the much too costly tiny plug-in meter
lamps in my Alpha 76 amp with a PC board 'light bar' using LEDs.

So far, I think I've determined that LEDs with diffused lenses will probably
be too dim, not illuminating the meter scale adequately, and I've certainly
determined that hi-output clear lens LEDs create a 1/2 'spot' on the meter
scale unless a semi-opaque filter (even a sheet of typing paper) is inserted
between the LED and the back of the meter.

The LEDs will be about 3/4 behind the meter scales, so I don't have a lot
of spacing to work with.

Anyone who has had success (or failure) with trying to do something similar,
I would appreciate hearing from you OFF-REFLECTOR.

I'm about to place an LED order with Mouser Electronics, but if you can give
me some BUY or DON'T BUY suggestions, I'll certainly take them to heart
BEFORE I place the order.

Thanks,

RE: [Elecraft] Weight of equipment

2008-07-01 Thread Nelson Moyer
Radio weight is relative (isn't everything?). I've owned two radios in 27
years of ham radio, the FT-707 (14.3 lb. and considered tiny in its day) and
the FT-100 (6.6 lb. and very tiny). The former was a knob radio, the latter
a push-button radio. I quickly learned to use just enough force to activate
a menu button (tap or press hold momentarily) without moving my 6.6 lb.
radio. Surely anyone brilliant enough to purchase the K3 (8 lb. or more,
depending upon configuration) should be adaptable enough to operate the
radio without moving it all over the bench. It's been a long wait for mine
(due to delayed release of the KRX3)! Fortunately, I'm expecting my shipping
notification any day now.

Remember the 20's 30's when equipment took up an entire wall of a shack?
Remember rigs like the Johnson transmitter line?...Hallicrafters rx's, etc?
How about transceivers of the 60's, 70's 80's? As years went by the
weight of equipment began to drop...(no heavy transformers, thinner metals
for chassis, plastic cases, etc, etc) Thank God for lighter equipment...I
can't lift the heavy stuff any more! Bring on light, small and high tech!

RE: [Elecraft] The K3 in comparison to the Big Guns

2008-05-16 Thread Nelson Moyer
I've been following the 'big gun' thread with interest. I'm astonished that
this group seems to imply that 'big gun' status depends upon the radio you
own, rather than the amplifiers and antennas you use. Most rigs today put
out between 100-200 watts, regardless of price. DX'ing and contesting
success seems to me to be related to your amplifier and your antennas, not
your radio. The radio only comes into play on the low bands, where being
able to hear the weak ones through the noise becomes important.

All this begs the question, Who is a 'big gun'? Is it someone with a 5
figure radio, someone who breaks all the pile-ups with one call, someone who
wins all of the contests, someone who is on top of the Honor Roll and has
5BWAZ, or someone who has 160 acres of antenna farm with full wavelength
beverages every 22.5 degrees? Maybe it's all of the above, but I doubt it.

I'm a little pistol by most definitions, but I'm #1 Honor Roll, have 2507
band-entities toward the Challenge, and hold the WPX Award of Excellence
endorsed for 160, 30, 17, 12, and digital modes. I lack 8 entities on 160
for 9BDXCC, lack 6 zones for 5BWAZ. I've been DX'ing since 1981, and I use
an FT-100 (FT-707 before that), 600 watts of amplifier power, a TH-11 at 48
ft. (since 1996, a HF6V before that), a side mounted 5 element yagi on 6
meters, and a HF2V with 30 meter coil. I have a flag, mag loop, and low 80
meter dipole to help me hear better on 160. My entire antenna farm is
crammed into a back yard in town that measures 60x70 ft.

So why did I order a K3? Because I can't hear the DX very well on 80 and
160, and I'm betting that the K3 will enable me to improve my low band
Challenge score and finish 5BWAZ from my sub-optimal location. Besides, I'm
retiring, and it's time for my dream radio.

Maybe 'big gun' is more about what you do than what you have, but I'm really
looking forward to my K3.

RE: [Elecraft] k3 Big Gun

2008-05-16 Thread Nelson Moyer
Then 'big gun' is directly related to your net worth, rather than your
ability or accomplishments. According to your definition, you can spend your
way to 'big gun' status, whether you ever use any of that 'setup' or not.

RE: [Elecraft] OT - End of the line for XP

I had the same experience following a mother board failure, so Microsoft

Unless the policy has changed, and I seriously doubt it, Microsoft allows
you to install XP on three different CPUs. When and if you try to load it on
a forth, the activation process will fail and tell you to call customer
service. I had a motherboard fail and was already on #3. I called customer
service and told them that the old machine was dead and the rep actually
reset me to zero (!) so after loading a new machine I have two left. I was
prepared for a battle but I was boviously quite surprised. Either Microsoft
is trying to work with people who play by the rules (and don't steal
software) or I was just lucky and got the right rep.
In any event, you have nothing but your time to lose by trying to load
another machine and also to ask for help if you need it.

I have another off topic question about Windows XP. I have a legal copy on a

generic computer that I bought sometime ago. It came with the CD and the

another computer and get it registered with Microsoft? I have heard horror
stories about registering with Microsoft. I paid for and own this copy of
XP, but can I move it?

It was just 8 years ago that Intel asked me to develop training modules on
how to use Widows Xp some of their call center staff. There was a huge
amount of angst over what problems Xp might cause. Drivers were near the top
of the list of concerns.

That was a long time ago in the lifespan of most technology. And Xp has a
number of years of Microsoft support ahead of it on current systems, such as
the one I'm using now. Even after that, it'll live on. I've got one machine
still running Windows Me, and it runs quite nicely (for a machine with a 500
MHz Pentium III and a few hundred k of RAM ). I know others still running
various versions of DOS!

Fortunately new software does not immediately displace everything else,
except in the minds of those hardy folks who choose to be early adopters.
Their experiences work out the bugs for the rest of us who merely want a
reliable tool to use.

I'm happy to be an early adopter of new communications technology. It's what
interests me.

I'll leave the software for those who enjoy doing that.

RE: [Elecraft] Dayton Orders - We're up next

2008-01-27 Thread Nelson Moyer
Thanks for the shipping update, Dick. It's nice to see Dayton orders are
being filled. Eric implied that once Dayton orders were shipped, they would
fly through the summer orders pretty quickly. Please keep posting shipping
dates so that I can estimate when my September order is likely to arrive.

I think I was about buyer #4 or so on Friday in Dayton last year, (18 May)
and I was emailed yesterday evening that my K3 kit would be soon on its way
(:-) Boy, those folks at Elecraft sure put in some late hours on
weekends... I added to my order and heard back from Lisa almost immediately
that Saturday evening(EST)...
