Re: [Elecraft] OT: Pigremote availability
Hi Tim, Just saw your other message direct to me. I'll reply here for anyone else that may be curious. I have all of the individual components that go into making a PigRemote except for a pretty important one, the audio codec board. When I first designed PR I decided to not put the audio codec, and it's related circuitry, directly on the PR motherboard for certain reasons I'll spare you the details of. The price for manufacturing that board has gone up drastically since I last ordered, probably because I always deal in relatively small quantities and board fab shops like to address something called a burden rate when accepting jobs. I'm not sure when I'll have that critical component so I can't make any guarantees on when I might be able to get one to you. It'd probably be faster to ask this group if anyone has one for sale. The PR was primarily designed to interface with the K3 and KX3 so there should be more than a handful out there. Whether or the owners want to part with them, not sure. :) On a side note, I do have a prototype PR that works with the K3 USB connection and it's the size of a deck of cards. I should revisit that to see about making it a product offering. 73, Nick N3WG On Thu, Jan 4, 2018 at 8:51 AM, Walter Underwoodwrote: > It might be worth asking for an RF exposure limit, then doing the station > evaluation worksheet from the FCC. > > Links to worksheet here: > > http://www.arrl.org/rf-exposure > > From the Medtronic patient letter (I’d get an official, current one for > your model of pacemaker, of course): > > Maintain a distance of at least 6 inches between your heart device and: > > ♦ Antennas of cellular phones, amateur radios, ham radios, walkie talkies > of 3 watts or less. Re: [Elecraft] pig knob for B vfo
Hi Bob, You can alter the commands that are sent when the knob encoder pulses so you could use UPB and DNB to control VFO B. Since the knob has two modes, toggled between with a push of the knob, you could have one of the modes control VFO A and the other control VFO B. Re: [Elecraft] Pig Knob
Hi Ted, On the back of the P3 are two 9-pin serial ports, labeled PC and XCVR. You would connected the Knob to the PC port of the P3 and then the XCVR port of the P3 to the K3. Re: [Elecraft] Logging software advice
Nobody ever mentions HamLog for Mac. :) To answer some questions directed at me about the Piglet with HamLog on iOS... (1) Can it fetch the frequency in use from the rig (K2 or KX3)? Yes. (2) Can it enter a frequency from the iPad? Yes. For K3 and KX3 it actually puts the whole face of the radio to iPad. (3) Can it send CW or PSK31 from the iPad? Yes, it's via keyboard though and only what the radio decodes, no waterfall or decode via audio (yet). 73, Nick N3WG On Wed, Jul 2, 2014 at 3:25 PM, Scott Manthe scott.man...@gmail.com wrote: Mac Logger DX is great, but I use RUMlog and RUMped. Re: [Elecraft] Logging software advice
Hi Phil, The Piglet creates a wireless network out of the box. It is possible to reconfigure the Piglet to join a home wireless network or a hotspot network created by a mobile device. When using it with iOS it's also possible to reconfigure the Piglet to create an ad-hoc wireless network allowing for simultaneous Wi-Fi and 3G/4G connectivity for rig control and callsign lookups. This reconfiguration can be done with a null modem adapter or cable. 73, Nick N3WG On Mon, Jun 30, 2014 at 5:21 PM, Phil Shepard ph...@riousa.com wrote: For logging, I have been running Logic 9 on an HP Windows 7 laptop. Re: [Elecraft] K3/P3 and Pigknob
Hi Bill, I know of a few folks using the knob with both the P3 and K3. The only issue I'm aware of is if you want to program a P3 macro into one of the programmable knob push buttons you have to prefix the command with a semi-colon. For example, if you wanted to send the P3 command to set the span to 50 kHZ, #SPN000500; you'd have to program the PK button to ;#SPN000500;, note the leading semi-colon. I wasn't able to work out why this is but it works. This is only a problem for commands going to the P3, button macros going through the P3 to the K3 don't need this semi-colon prefix. I'll drop your knob in the mail tomorrow. Also, I do full-refund returns; if you feel it's not for you just let me know. 73, Nick N3WG On Mon, Nov 18, 2013 at 6:13 PM, Bill Myers foc...@ix.netcom.com wrote: Great input, Fred. In situations where VFO B, or RIT need constant attention for long periods (dx pile ups, run mode in contests), I get up from the operating chair with a distinctive S hook in my back. That probably involves age and arthritis as well, but still, it's a pretty good justification for adding another accessory to the K3/P3! The PN will put VFO B and RIT control at desk level. Re: [Elecraft] Default tuning rate on the Pigknob
Hi Howard, There isn't a command to change the rate that the encoder built into the K3 operates, what we can do is send a command to the radio to move the VFO frequency up or down at different distances from the current frequency. When the PigKnob encoder pulses, the microcontroller first determines which direction the knob is spinning, then consults EEPROM to get the configured command to be sent and then writes those characters out the serial port to the radio. The knob has two states, normal tuning and alternate tuning. The factory config will send the UP; command for clockwise and DN; command for counter-clockwise. When the knob is toggled into the alternate tuning mode, by depressing the knob once, the default commands sent are UP4; and DN4;. The 4 in these commands tells the radio how far it should move up or down, 4 is 1 kHz. When there is no number defined, it will move 10 Hz. All four of these commands are configurable. The K3 Programmer's Reference says that the command DNn; and UPn; has options for n defined as: 0=1 Hz; 1 or not used=10 Hz; 2=20 Hz; 3=50 Hz; 4=1 kHz; 5=2 kHz; 6=3 kHz; 7=5 kHz; 8=100 Hz; 9=200 Hz Following these specifications if you wanted to have the clockwise encoder pulse move the VFO up 5 kHz, for example, you would send the UP7; command. To address your question, if you wanted the default tuning state to move up/down 1 kHz per pulse of the encoder and you wanted the alternate state to move RIT up or down, the following configuration commands would accomplish that. cw UP4; cc DN4; fcw RU; fcc RD; 73, Nick N3WG On Mon, Jun 10, 2013 at 5:57 PM, Howard Sherer h...@lehigh.edu wrote: Just installed the Pigknob on my K3 and it works great. Re: [Elecraft] Pigknob
Something I discovered at Dayton is I probably shouldn't have called that switched mode in the encoder Fast Tuning Mode. I should have called it Alternate Tuning Mode or something similar. I was asked several times, Can I tune RIT with this? After the third person asked, we tried it. Every switch/function on the knob is configurable including the commands that are sent when the encoder pulses. The fast tuning mode is toggled on/off with a push of the knob to activate the switch built into the encoder. We changed the fast clockwise command to RIT Up (RU;) and the fast counter-clockwise command to RIT Down (RD;) and then we configured one of the push buttons for RIT Clear (RC;). In one tuning state VFO A would tune up/down, when the push button in the knob was pressed to toggle to the alternate state, we could tune RIT up/down and at anytime could push the RIT Clear button to reset the RIT offset. 73, Nick On Wed, May 22, 2013 at 4:51 AM, AB1DD ab...@arrl.net wrote: Got a PigKnob yesterday. Re: [Elecraft] Pigknob
Hi Brian, I replied to your email a couple hours later, on Feb 1st at 15:02 PST. Perhaps it got filtered, there were quite a few emails in that thread and the subject had [OT] in it. Here are the relevant excerpts. -- Original: I'm trying to think of whether there would be any interaction with a K3 attached to LPBRIDGE. The LPBRIDGE creates up to 5 virtual serial ports and it essentially runs K3 the via the one real RS232 port. It polls as typically at 200 ms. The virtual ports are use by a logging program, the SKIMMER decoder/or ROCKY panadapter, and separate digital mode program(s). All must be run at the 38.4 baud rate. I suppose, one would connect this device in the RS232 line. If LP Bridge is sending data that fast, there would be contention if the knob is interacted with while LP Bridge was talking through the knob. -- To add to that reply from back then, if the knob were connected in-line with the computer and K3, as data comes into the knob from the computer, it is immediately sent out the other port, byte for byte, unaltered. The same occurs in the other direction, from radio to computer. If a button is pushed on the knob, the entire text of that macro is immediately sent out to the radio. If LP Bridge can use another physical port, then you could connect the Knob's rig port to a physical port on the computer and let LP Bridge manage the communication from knob to radio. Re: [Elecraft] iPad as wired remote for Elecraft rig?
Hello Everyone, When I first started work on Pigtail, the original plan was to make it a wired accessory. With the assistance of a lawyer (required) I went through the whole licensing and NDA process to make approved hardware and the very first prototype was working on the bench a couple months later. It plugged into the 30 pin connector on iOS devices. As I got deeper into the process, unless I was making thousands of them it just wouldn't be feasible without the cable costing a lot of money. I switched over to Bluetooth which is also restricted when it comes to serial data and found many of the same roadblocks. I eventually went with WiFi because it's universal and there's no licensing restrictions. When first considering WiFi I thought, But... there's not going to be WiFi on top of the mountain... The wifi module I'm using can operate independently of any wireless networks so that problem went away and off I went. And with the switch from the 30-pin connector to Lightning on iOS devices, I'm pretty happy I did. I'm giving a talk at Dayton later this week on the process I took and mistakes I made when going through the process of making Pigtail. A large portion (and goal) of the talk is how to DIY for anyone who wants to make something like this themselves. 73, Nick N3WG On Mon, May 13, 2013 at 8:42 AM, Mike Heitmann n...@att.net wrote: Hi Andrew, Apple is pretty restrictive with what / who / how the USB and Bluetooth Interfaces get used in iOS. I've been happily using the HamLog app with two devices: the Pigtail and the Piglet, with my KX3. It works very well. The Pigtail or Piglet device (you only need one of the two) connects to your KX3 serial port and creates a virtual serial cable to the KX3. The HamLog app talks to the KX3 via an adhoc type WiFi connection providing rig control and logging capability. It works great in the field for portable operations, and when I get home I can export the HamLog adif contact log file, then upload the file to my main logging program on the PC in my shack. Re: [Elecraft] 4-pound Field Day, anyone?
On the HamLog note, it does have a Field Day logger built in. It's coming close to the time for me to get any changes into that part of the app to make sure they're live before the event. If anyone has any suggestions on things to change, please send them directly to me and I'll try to get them in there. I recently made a few changes to the dup checker to make it more proactive and added the new Ontario sections. Also, it does work with Piglet/KX3 for automated mode/freq logging. Hi all, This year I'm going to break with tradition and *not* drag tons of gear to my field-day site. I'm going minimal….4 pounds max of radio gear. This will allow me to put more emphasis on food, drink, and enjoying time with my son (now almost 9). If anyone else is up for FD4#, let me know. I'd like to compare notes on equipment, especially antennas, battery packs, and logging. 4 pounds (or so) is not an arbitrary number. This allows for: - a KX3 with internal ATU and attached paddle - mic and headphones - external Li battery, plus 8 internal AA batteries in the rig as a backup - two 50' (roughly) lengths of antenna wire, adapters, and a couple of 1-oz weights to get one wire into a tree - paper log and dupe sheets (maybe…more on this below) - soft carrying case for all of the above (in my case, a Think Tank Strobe Stuff bag) I still expect to be reasonably competitive in the 1B-battery category even with this lightweight station. I hope to operate on 80-6 meters in CW, SSB, and digital modes (RTTY using the CW paddle and the KX3's text decode function). There are two items I'm still working on: 1. External battery I need something that will fit into the bottom of the Strobe Stuff bag. It should supply at least 11 V, and I'd prefer 4 to 5 AH, though I could get by with 3 AH and switch to the internal AAs later if necessary. Has any consensus formed about specific Li battery packs in this class? Ideal max size would be 1x3x2.5 (HWD). 2. Logging I actually like paper logging in the field. It's kind of a Zen thing, checking dupe sheets manually (Griffin is old enough to help with this, too). But are there any good FD apps for the iPhone? I need the iPhone anyway so it doesn't count towards the station weight total. If there's an app that's easy to use for this, I'd love to try it. Heck, I'd even pay for it. [Elecraft] Fwd: iSDR app and KX3 not working
Howdy Folks, Just a quick note on the comments from Buck. Pigtail works with HamLog to allow an iOS or Android device to act as a CW/DATA terminal (along with all the other stuff it does) with no waterfall. Pigtail/Pignology is not associated with the iSDR application. I think it'd be pretty neat if the author of iSDR wanted to integrate the Pigtail connectivity into his app to gather the frequency automatically but I haven't approached him about it. 73, Nick N3WG On Sat, Dec 29, 2012 at 2:56 PM, Buck k4ia k...@aol.com wrote: You need more than the Griffin to get the iPad to control the radio. [Elecraft] [OT] Remoting with iPad/iPhone - Testers Needed
Howdy Folks, I'm N3WG, the HamLog/Pigtail guy. Something I've been asked for often, and something I've wanted to do for a while, is get bi-directional audio built into HamLog on iOS devices. Over the past week I've got it working to where I have rig control of a radio at home with audio streaming for both TX and RX, no Skype needed. The first implementation of the software that runs at home with your radio is in the form of a Mac App. I have a demo video of it up here with a K3 and KX3: http://youtu.be/2pWIGSrwHwU I will be needing additional testers (about 5) in about 2 weeks. If you have a Mac computer and an iPhone and/or iPad and would like to help out, please visit http://etherpig.com and enter your email in the newsletter form. If you're not comfortable entering your email address in the website, feel free to email me directly and I'll add you to my list. 73, Nick N3WG __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] [OT] Radio Control via HamLog on iPhone
Hello Everyone, Over the years that HamLog (http://goo.gl/BMFzM) has been available on the various mobile platforms out there, I've had several users ask me for a way to get radio information into the app automatically, both at home and/or out in the field, portable, dxpeditions, etc. In the past few weeks I've put something together that allows HamLog to talk to radios for both command control and state retrieval. Below is a link to a demo of it working with an iPad and a K3. The video should answer a lot of the questions you might have. This is all entirely beta at the moment so it might not look like this in the first release. Demo Video (about 9 minutes): http://goo.gl/N8JK7 Take a look and let me know what you think! If you're interested in having one, please visit the following URL and enter your call sign and email address. There is no obligation and I'm not asking for any type of deposit; I just need to gauge the demand for the initial run. Interest Registration: http://pignology.net/ptainterest I envision a KX3 stashed in a backpack (HF Pack style) being fully controlled by an iOS/Android device while walking down the trail, all the while logging the contacts you're making. 73, Nick N3WG/6 P.S. That's the plan, Tim. I have the same app currently in the Android Market that will be modified to provide the same functionality. Re: [Elecraft] K3 transport box ?
Hi Erwin, I use a Pelican 1510 http://pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1510. It's made to be a carrry-on for travel with wheels and a retractable tow handle. I had to remove the handle from the K3 to get it to fit. I don't miss that handle though. Here's a picture of it: http://i.imgur.com/YbHHL.jpg That's a Gamma Research power supply ( http://www.gammaresearch.net/hps-1a.html) on the left and I put everything else (mic, key, cables, etc.) in the open area on the right. I was forced to gate check it one time and it made it through with just a few scratches; works great for me. 73, Nick N3WG On Fri, Oct 21, 2011 at 8:45 AM, DK5EW dk...@mmmonvhf.de wrote: Hi all, I guess many of you use the K3 as well portable. Re: [Elecraft] iPad/iPhone control app
I actually have this in the works, to interface radios to HamLog on iDevices and Android. The first basic prototype is working on the breadboard. I'll mention it here when it's ready to go. 73, Nick N3WG On Aug 26, 2011, at 4:10 AM, David Ferrington, M0XDF m0...@alphadene.co.uk wrote: If this is to be used to control and possibly log from a KX3, then it needs to be a direct connection between the IOS device and the KX3 - so supporting a bluetooth serial adapter might be the way to go 73 de M0XDF, K3 #174, P3 #108, KX3 #??? -- Whales have calves, Cats have kittens, Bears have cubs, Bats have bittens, Swans have cygnets, Seals have puppies, But guppies just have little guppies. - Ogden Nash (1902-1971) On 26 Aug 2011, at 03:54, David Fleming wrote: On Thu, 8/25/11, Phil Hystad wrote: As far as browsing memories idea mentioned below, one way to do this is to do a full page sweep by flicking a page aside and bringing up a new page. Each page is the same basic interface for the KX3 but each new page is a different setup with memories, modes, and so on. Now THAT is an excellent idea. Imagine flipping through any number of virtual KX3's (or K3's) like pages in a book. One for CW, one for SSB, one for RTTY, etc.. Each with it's own custom memories, macros, eq, agc, filters, etc. Wow! That would be très cool! I received a couple of emails asking how the app would connect to the radio. There are several options. WiFi/Serial and Ethernet/Serial adapters are available that could provide the serial communication with the rig. Either of these would allow the app to connect over the local network (or internet) without having a computer attached. The downside is the cost. These adapters are relatively expensive. It could also be done with a helper app. I have developed a small serial server that runs on a PC or Mac connected to the radio. The iPad app connects to the helper app over the network. The helper app simply forwards commands from the iPad app to the radio, and forwards responses from the radio to the app. It works well and costs nothing. Since most folks already have computers attached to their rigs, this would be the most popular option - I expect. :) A google search shows there are other options out there. Most appear to be hacks and involve jailbreaking the device. Thank you, Weymouth. I'm given a limited amount of promotional codes to give away HamLog for free. To give back to the Elecraft community that has served us all so well over the years, I'd be happy to give away the software to the first ten iPhone owners who reply direct.
